The short version
Shopify Payments lists 21 local payment methods as of October 2026, and which ones your store can turn on depends first on the country of your Shopify Payments account, then on the buyer's country and currency.
Buyers outside your business location see a method only through a market in an eligible currency, and many methods also check store eligibility, public storefront pages, or a review or early-access status.
You switch them on in Settings > Payments under Local payment methods, or let managed payment methods activate the popular ones for the regions you sell to.
When one still isn't showing, check account country, then store eligibility and early access, then the buyer's market currency.
A local payment method is a way to pay that buyers in one country already use instead of a card: iDEAL in the Netherlands, Bizum in Spain, BLIK in Poland, OXXO cash vouchers in Mexico. Shopify Payments carries 21 of them as of October 2026, and each one answers three questions differently: where your Shopify Payments account must be, which buyers and currencies it serves, and what your store has to set up before it appears at checkout.
This guide puts those answers side by side. The finder sorts the methods by your account country, the two-gate section separates what lets your store turn a method on from what lets a buyer see it, and the checklist near the end works through a method that won't show, one check at a time. Each method's deeper rules sit on its own page, linked from the table.
What Shopify Counts as a Local Payment Method
Key takeaway
Shopify's own definition is short: you activate local payment methods with Shopify Payments to offer customers region-specific ways to pay at checkout. Orders paid that way land in the same Shopify Payments payouts as your card transactions, so there is no separate settlement to reconcile.
The condition that governs everything else on this page sits on Shopify's index of the methods:
Each method is available only when a customer is in a supported country and selects an eligible currency.
So a buyer in Belgium paying in euros can see Bancontact, and the same buyer checking out in another currency cannot. Shopify groups the methods into four categories by how the buyer pays:
Shopify's four categories of local payment methods
| Shopify's category | How the buyer pays | Methods |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible payment options | Spreads or delays the cost of the purchase | Klarna, Meses sin intereses, Scalapay |
| Mobile wallet and app-based payments | Authorizes the payment in a digital wallet or mobile app during checkout | Alipay, BLIK, GrabPay, MB WAY, MobilePay, Satispay, Swish, TWINT, WeChat Pay |
| Cash and voucher payments | Places the order online and pays later with a barcode or reference number | OXXO |
| Bank transfer and direct debit payments | Pays directly from a bank account at checkout | Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero, EPS, Przelewy24, ACH Direct Debit, Multibanco |
Shopify Help Center, Local payment methods index, read October 29, 2026.
That accounts for 19 of the 21. Bizum, the phone-number payment method in Spain, and USD Coin (USDC) are listed in the same section of the Help Center but placed in none of the four categories; the full table further down still lists both.
Every Method: Buyer Country, Account Country and Status
Key takeaway
The list is still growing. On October 28, 2026, Shopify's Fall '26 Edition announced seven new local payment methods in Shopify Payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay and GrabPay. The announcement doesn't make them available to every store: as of October 29, 2026, the Alipay, WeChat Pay and GrabPay pages still carry early-access notices.
Start with the country of your Shopify Payments account, because that is the rule no market or setting can change. The finder sorts all 21 methods for that country and, if you choose one, for the country you sell to.
- AlipayEarly accessBuyers: Buyers wherever they use the app · Buyer pays in CNY; you're paid in your payout currencyEligible business category, a public store, and an account review that usually takes up to about 5 days.

- BancontactBuyers: Belgium · EURPage sets a store rule instead of a country list: your store must accept EUR. Shopify Payments active and not in test mode.
- iDEAL | WeroBuyers: Netherlands · EURPage sets store rules instead of a country list: accept EUR and keep the Netherlands as an active market; check your own country's payment-methods page. Identity verification, trustworthy business practices such as a clear refund policy, a store not in private mode, and a published legal notice (Impressum).
- Meses sin interesesBuyers: Mexico · MXN, credit cards onlyPage describes Shopify Payments in Mexico, with no additional onboarding. Plans of 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, each with its own minimum order total.
- ScalapayBuyers: 9 countries · EURPage asks only that your store be in a supported country and use Shopify Payments. Eligible business category; sole traders add a VAT or business registration number.
Treat the result as a first filter, not a green light: a method on your list still has to clear the market, store and review checks in the next sections. The table below holds the same data for every method at once, with a link to our deeper answer where we have one.

Each method's Shopify Help Center page and the local payment methods index, read October 29, 2026. Account counts are the countries or regions each page lists.
Where Your Shopify Payments Account Must Be
Key takeaway
The two lists rarely match. Klarna can be activated on accounts in 26 countries, and it is shown to buyers in 19. Romania is on Klarna's buyer list but not its account list, so a store with a Romanian account can't activate it, while a store in Malta can activate Klarna even though Malta isn't a Klarna buyer country.
Five methods are tied to a single account country:
- Multibanco — available only to merchants in Portugal.
- OXXO — stores located in Mexico on a Shopify Payments Mexico account.
- Swish — stores based in Sweden, on Shopify Payments for Sweden.
- GrabPay — accounts in Singapore, and only stores included in early access.
- ACH Direct Debit — stores in the United States that accept USD.
Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero and Scalapay set store rules instead of a country list. Bancontact asks that your store accept EUR; iDEAL | Wero that it accept EUR and keep the Netherlands as an active market; Scalapay only that your store “be in a supported country and use Shopify Payments”.
The Meses sin intereses page publishes no account list either: it addresses stores that use Shopify Payments in Mexico, and it serves buyers in Mexico paying in MXN. For those four, the method's status in your own Payments settings is the answer.
Early Access and Closed Methods
Key takeaway
Status changes faster than any other column in the table, so read this as of October 29, 2026:
- Early access: Alipay, Bizum, WeChat Pay and GrabPay. Shopify's index says some methods “might not be available to every store or every customer yet”, and you can confirm whether a method is in early access in the Payments settings of your admin.
- Closed to new activations: Przelewy24 “isn't available for new activations through Shopify Payments”; if it is already active on your store, you can continue using it.
- Scalapay: its own page carries no early-access notice, but Shopify's POS table marks it as early access. The POS section below sets out both sides.
iDEAL Is Becoming iDEAL | Wero
Key takeaway
iDEAL is the Dutch bank-payment method, and its payments are moving onto the Wero infrastructure in stages. For your store, the visible change so far is the name: Shopify's Help Center calls the method iDEAL | Wero on its iDEAL page. The dates come from the Dutch schemes, not from Shopify:
Until the switch completes, the Dutch Payments Association says iDEAL stays in use as usual while “the logo and brand name will gradually change.” No Shopify help or changelog page we read dates the switch or asks you to change a setting (see the box below), so as of October 29, 2026 Shopify hasn't asked you to do anything. The two gates in the next section still decide whether iDEAL | Wero shows at all.
Names You May Be Looking For That Aren't on the List
Key takeaway
A few names that sound like local methods are not on Shopify's list of 21. Here is where each one stands on Shopify's pages:
Names that aren't Shopify Payments local methods
| Name | What Shopify's pages show (October 29, 2026) | What to use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Cartes Bancaires | A card brand: Shopify's France payment-methods page lists it with the cards that switch on automatically with Shopify Payments, not among local methods. | Nothing to activate separately — it comes with cards |
| Sofort | Removed. An archived copy of Shopify's Sofort page reads: “Starting December 6, 2024, Sofort will no longer be available as a payment method on Shopify.” | Shopify pointed merchants to Klarna |
| giropay | No Shopify Payments page we read describes it as a current method (see the box below). | The bank-transfer methods in the table above |
| Afterpay | Not one of the 21 local payment methods. | Our FAQ on whether you can accept Afterpay on Shopify |
Shopify Help Center pages read October 29, 2026. The Sofort page is no longer live; we quote the Wayback Machine capture of October 5, 2025.
Before a Method Can Show: Two Gates
Key takeaway
Merging the two into one list hides which kind of problem you have. Gate one is about your store and your Shopify Payments account; gate two is about the buyer — where they are, which currency they check out in, and how they check out.
Gate One: Can Your Store Turn It On?
Key takeaway
Each row is a condition at least one method sets. Check them in your own store before you look at markets:
Gate one: what lets your store turn a method on
| Condition | Methods that set it | Where you check it | If you miss it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Payments is active and not in test mode | Every method runs on Shopify Payments; Bancontact and Multibanco state that they don't work in test mode | Settings > Payments | The method doesn't work |
| Your account country is on the method's list | Every method that publishes a list (the finder above) | The country of your Shopify Payments account | The method can be missing from your settings — Alipay's page says your store might not be eligible |
| Identity verification is complete | ACH Direct Debit, iDEAL | Wero, OXXO, Swish, USDC | Your Shopify Payments account — our guide covers why verification fails and how to fix it | You can't activate the method; Swish may also ask you to verify your identity when you activate it |
| An eligible business type or category | Alipay, Bizum, Klarna, MB WAY, MobilePay, OXXO, Przelewy24, Satispay, Scalapay, Swish, TWINT, WeChat Pay; Bizum, Przelewy24 and Satispay also bar named business types | Your business details in Shopify Payments | The method isn't offered at checkout |
| Tax identification and legal name | Bizum (tax ID, and a legal name that matches it), Przelewy24 (tax ID at setup), MobilePay (a TIN for accounts in Norway), Scalapay (a VAT or business registration number for individuals and sole proprietors) | Your Shopify Payments account | Bizum can stay pending; Scalapay gives a sole trader 4 days to add the number before it is deactivated |
| A public storefront with the pages the method checks | No password or private mode: Alipay, iDEAL | Wero, Przelewy24, Satispay, Swish, TWINT, WeChat Pay. Pages: a legal notice (iDEAL | Wero, TWINT), terms of service (TWINT), refund and privacy policies (Przelewy24), a clear refund policy as part of trustworthy business practices (iDEAL | Wero), seven storefront items (Klarna), store policies and contact details (Swish) | Your live storefront | The store isn't eligible until it's fixed; for Klarna, Klarna makes the decision |
| Conflicting additional payment gateways are deactivated | Every method (Shopify's index); the Alipay, Bancontact, Multibanco, Satispay and WeChat Pay pages repeat it | Settings > Payments — Shopify's deactivation steps call this list Additional payment methods | You can't activate the method; keep the deactivated payment app installed, as Shopify advises |
Each method's Shopify Help Center page and the local payment methods index, read October 29, 2026.
ACH Direct Debit and, on most of Shopify's country payment-methods pages, iDEAL | Wero add volume thresholds. ACH Direct Debit needs more than 100 fulfilled orders, a store that has completed its trial and is on an active paid plan, and completed identity verification, all at once.
For iDEAL | Wero, Shopify's own pages disagree. The United States payment-methods page says you “must process at least 100 orders with Shopify Payments before you can activate iDEAL | Wero”, and 35 of Shopify's 41 country payment-methods pages carry that rule; the iDEAL | Wero page lists its requirements without it. Both were read on October 29, 2026.
While the two disagree, go by the payment-methods page for your own account's country: if it carries the 100-order rule, plan on reaching that number before you expect iDEAL | Wero at checkout.
Gate Two: Will a Buyer See It?
Key takeaway
Shopify's rule for selling abroad is direct: to offer local payment methods in countries outside your business location, those countries must be set up as markets. Several method pages make it concrete: Bizum “displays only after you set up an active market that includes Spain with EUR”, MB WAY needs the same for Portugal, and iDEAL | Wero needs the Netherlands as an active market.
The currency belongs to the market itself. In the Germany market below, as of October 29, 2026, it sits in the Customized block as Currency:
- Markets
- Germany
For Klarna, the currency rule is per region: the market for a region has to use that region's local currency from Shopify's list of nine, CHF, CZK, DKK, EUR, GBP, NOK, PLN, RON or SEK. Behind every method sits a platform rule: only stores with Shopify Payments or Adyen as the primary gateway can process payments in a customer's local currency.
How markets, currencies and prices fit together is a topic of its own; our Shopify Markets guide covers currencies and payouts per market.
Four more conditions decide what a buyer sees:
- Email checkout. Klarna and Multibanco show only to customers who check out with an email address.
- Amount limits. Bizum and MB WAY take orders from €0.50 to €5,000 and Multibanco from €0.50 to €99,999. The amount paid with the method must be €0.50 to €999,999.99 for Satispay, €5 to €4,999.99 per payment for Scalapay, and 10 to 10,000 MXN for OXXO.
- Buyer details. BLIK needs a Polish address and PLN; iDEAL | Wero a Netherlands address and EUR.
- Timing. Bizum can take up to 2 minutes to appear after you activate it, and a method in gradual rollout can take a few days to reach every eligible checkout.
Selling With Multiple Entities
Key takeaway
Selling with multiple entities is available only on the Shopify Plus and Shopify Enterprise Commerce plans, and it changes the question from which country your account is in to which entity processes the market. Shopify Payments must still be the primary payment provider on each entity.
The currency rule is precise: for certain payment methods, the entity processing the transaction must have the required currency set as its Default payout currency, not just as an available payout currency. When a method isn't displayed in a multi-entity setup, Shopify says the entity likely doesn't have the local currency set as its Default.
Third-party local methods are a separate case. Offering third-party payment methods other than PayPal in markets assigned to non-primary entities is in early access and available only by request, as of October 29, 2026.
Keeping a Third-Party Card Processor
If another provider processes your cards, Shopify Payments can still run beside it and handle the methods that provider doesn't support, such as Shop Pay and local payment methods. As of October 29, 2026, Shopify Plus stores with a contract can request that setup in early access, and Shopify says the setup is available to stores on all other plans; its Shopify Payments transactions are charged at standard Shopify Payments rates plus a 1.25% premium. Our payment gateways guide works through when mixing providers pays off.
How Do You Turn On a Local Payment Method?
Key takeaway
The common path, which method pages such as ACH Direct Debit, Bizum, BLIK, MB WAY, MobilePay, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay and TWINT give step by step:
- Settings
- Payments
- Shopify Payments
- Manage
- More actions
- Manage payment methods
- Local payment methods
In the Local payment methods section, open the menu next to the method and click Enable. A few methods sit elsewhere: Klarna is selected in the Payment methods section and saved, Meses sin intereses opens with Manage so you can choose its plans, and USDC sits in the Crypto section behind Verify identity.
Shopify's Markets documentation names a second route: when a market contains a country that is eligible for local payment methods, a payments card with the available methods is displayed in that market's settings, and you can activate or deactivate them from it.
Not every method waits for you to click. Some local payment methods need additional approval before they can be activated, and overall a method switches on in one of five ways:
Five ways a local method switches on
| How it switches on | Methods | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| You enable it | ACH Direct Debit, Bizum, BLIK, GrabPay, MB WAY, MobilePay, OXXO, Satispay, TWINT; Klarna; Meses sin intereses on existing Mexico accounts; USDC; Scalapay (you can start accepting payments right away; Scalapay reviews your store after your first Scalapay payment, and if it doesn't approve your store, Scalapay is deactivated) | Enable it under Local payment methods (Klarna: select it under Payment methods and save; Meses sin intereses: click Manage, select its plans and save; USDC: Verify identity in the Crypto section) |
| It comes on with Shopify Payments | EPS (enabled by default), iDEAL | Wero (connected automatically, except stores in Mexico), Klarna (new eligible accounts), Multibanco (stores in Portugal), Meses sin intereses (new Mexico accounts) | Confirm it is on in your Payments settings |
| Shopify emails you after an automatic review | iDEAL | Wero, Swish | Watch the store owner's inbox; the email explains how to activate the method |
| It goes through a review | Alipay and WeChat Pay (usually up to about 5 days, can take longer), Multibanco (up to 48 hours), Klarna (Klarna decides) | Plan for the wait before you tell buyers it's there |
| Managed payment methods activates it | Methods popular in the regions you sell to; the BLIK, Bancontact, EPS, Klarna, MobilePay and Multibanco pages say they may be activated this way | Turn the feature on once (next section) |
Each method's Shopify Help Center page and the managed payment methods page, read October 29, 2026.
iDEAL | Wero appears in two rows because its page says both things: that it “is automatically connected to your store” once you set up Shopify Payments, and that stores meeting its criteria receive an email explaining how to activate it. The page doesn't say how the two fit together, so check the method's status in your Payments settings rather than relying on either.
Managed Payment Methods: Automatic, With Three Catches
Key takeaway
Instead of activating methods one by one, you can turn on Managed payment methods in its card in your Shopify Payments settings. Shopify Payments local methods that are popular with customers in the regions where you sell are then activated for you, and Shopify charges no additional fee for the feature.
Three things it won't do:
- Reactivate a method you turned off. If you previously deactivated a local payment method, managed payment methods doesn't switch it back on.
- Survive SNI being switched off. If you deactivate SNI after activating managed payment methods, the feature is deactivated too.
- Replace a third-party version. With a third-party version of a method installed, such as Klarna, the Shopify Payments version isn't activated automatically; you switch it yourself.
It also leaves cards, cash on delivery, manual methods and gift cards alone, and on a multi-entity store it activates a method only where both the market and the entity that processes it support the method.
What Local Methods Can't Do
Key takeaway
These limits decide which products and channels a local method can carry. Check them before you steer buyers of subscriptions, pre-orders or in-store sales toward one.
Subscriptions, Pre-Orders and Gift Cards
Key takeaway
Subscriptions, by method page
| What the method's page says | Methods |
|---|---|
| Customers can't pay for subscriptions with it | Alipay, Bizum, BLIK, GrabPay, MB WAY, MobilePay, OXXO, Przelewy24, Satispay, Scalapay, Swish, TWINT, USDC, WeChat Pay |
| The page doesn't say | ACH Direct Debit, Bancontact, EPS, iDEAL | Wero, Klarna, Meses sin intereses, Multibanco |
Each method's Shopify Help Center page, read October 29, 2026; “doesn't say” describes those pages, not a rule.
Shopify Subscriptions sets the general rule more softly: local, manual or non-credit-card payment methods “might not be available for subscriptions”. Where a method page is silent, run a test subscription checkout before you promise it. Subscriptions as a whole are covered in our recurring payments guide.
Pre-orders have a firmer line: customers can't use local payment methods such as Klarna and mollie iDEAL | Wero to purchase pre-orders, and Shopify says pre-orders are currently only available to merchants using Shopify Payments or PayPal Express. Our pre-orders guide lists everything else pre-orders don't support.
For iDEAL | Wero and subscriptions specifically, our FAQ answers whether customers can pay for Shopify subscriptions with iDEAL. Gift cards are the other gap: customers can't use Alipay or WeChat Pay to buy gift card products.
Refunds and Disputes, Method by Method
Key takeaway
Refunds and disputes, by method
| Method | Refunds | Disputes and chargebacks |
|---|---|---|
| ACH Direct Debit | Within 180 days; processing fee not returned; up to 4 business days to process | Bank disputes for up to 60 calendar days, sometimes longer; a valid one becomes a chargeback with a $15 USD fee |
| Alipay | Full or partial, up to 90 days | No card-style chargebacks |
| BLIK | Full or partial | Disputes up to 13 months after the transaction; BLIK or the bank decides |
| EPS | Within 180 days; processing fee not returned | No chargeback process |
| iDEAL | Wero | Within 180 days; processing fee not returned | No chargebacks; multiple complaints to local authorities can get the method disabled |
| Klarna | Within 180 days; processing fee not returned | Klarna's dispute process; Klarna decides |
| Multibanco | Processing fee not returned; Stripe emails the buyer for their IBAN | No chargebacks |
| OXXO | Not to the original method: store credit, a gift card, or an SPEI transfer outside Shopify | No chargebacks |
| Przelewy24 | Full or partial | Customers can't open disputes |
| Satispay | Full or partial, up to 180 days | Up to 120 calendar days; evidence due within 15 calendar days |
| Scalapay | Full or partial, up to 90 days | Up to 210 days; evidence due within 7 days |
| Swish | Full or partial | No chargebacks |
| USDC | Can't exceed the order amount minus any USDC cashback | Customers can't open disputes |
| WeChat Pay | Full or partial, up to 180 days | No card-style chargebacks |
| GrabPay | Full or partial, up to 90 days | No chargeback process through Shopify Payments |
Each method's Shopify Help Center page, read October 29, 2026.
Bizum, BLIK, MB WAY, MobilePay, TWINT, Swish and Przelewy24 allow full or partial refunds, and their pages don't state a refund window. Buyers dispute Bizum, MB WAY and TWINT payments through their bank, and MobilePay payments through their card issuer.
OXXO and Multibanco are the two refunds that need extra steps; our FAQ walks through how to refund a customer who paid with OXXO or Multibanco.
How disputes and chargebacks run on Shopify Payments in general, from evidence to fees, is in our Shopify chargebacks guide.
Vouchers and Delayed Payments
Key takeaway
With OXXO the buyer places the order online and pays later at an OXXO store. The OXXO barcode is valid for 5 days after the order is placed, payment confirmation can take up to 3 business days after the buyer pays, and when OXXO is the only payment on the order and none is confirmed, the order is canceled automatically and its inventory released.
Multibanco follows the same pay-later pattern in Portugal: if a customer doesn't complete payment within 7 days, the order is canceled.
ACH Direct Debit is different in kind. The payment can take up to 4 business days to process, Shopify calls it a non-guaranteed method, and a failed ACH Direct Debit costs you a $4 USD fee.
What to do with an order whose voucher is never paid is in our FAQ on what happens if a customer never pays a Multibanco or OXXO voucher.
Local Methods on Shopify POS
Key takeaway
You activate local payment methods for Shopify POS in the Point of Sale channel, separately from online checkout, and a method displays on POS only when the retail transaction's currency is one it supports. Shopify names BLIK, Przelewy24, Multibanco, EPS and OXXO as examples POS doesn't support, and the Bancontact and ACH Direct Debit pages rule out in-person sales too.
Local method transactions on POS count as non-card-present, and Shopify notes that local payment methods carry a higher chargeback risk in retail settings. Swish on POS carries a condition that appears only in the POS table: it is available for Shopify Plus stores.
Two rows of the POS table disagree with the methods' own pages, both read on October 29, 2026. The POS table marks Scalapay as early access, while Scalapay's page carries no early-access notice. For USDC in the United States, the POS table and the USDC page exclude different states.
While they disagree, confirm Scalapay's status for your store in your Payments settings. For USDC, read the USDC page for online checkout and the POS table for in-store sales, and if your state appears on only one list, ask Shopify Support before you take USDC there.
What Local Methods Cost
Key takeaway
Shopify's own line is that transaction fees for local payment methods vary by method and by your Shopify plan, and our FAQ on how Shopify Payments rates differ by country is where per-country rates live. What the method pages do state:
- MobilePay: you're charged 49 DKK per month while you use it, billed with your Shopify bills.
- ACH Direct Debit: $4 USD when a debit fails, and a $15 USD fee when the customer's bank decides a dispute is valid.
- Meses sin intereses: additional fees apply when a customer pays in installments.
- Scalapay: Scalapay's fee is deducted from the amount you receive.

Why Isn't a Local Payment Method Showing at Checkout?
Key takeaway
The method you expected isn't in your Local payment methods list at all. Or it is there and enabled, yet a buyer in the right country never sees it. Or a customer says they paid with it while your own test checkout doesn't show it.
The third case can be normal. When a method is in early access and managed payment methods has switched it on, Shopify warns:
The payment method might be displayed at checkout for only some of your customers. This is expected, and the payment method might not be displayed when you test your own checkout.
For the other two cases, the checks below follow the two gates above: your account, your store and the method itself first, then the buyer's market, then a test checkout. Tick each one off as you go; your progress stays in this browser.
Local payment method not showing: eight checksRun them in order; a failed early check makes the later ones irrelevant.

Run them in order; a failed early check makes the later ones irrelevant.
Check that Shopify Payments is active on the store and not in test mode; Bancontact and Multibanco say they don't work in test mode.
Before you tick this off
- Shopify Payments is the store's payment provider
- Test mode is off
Look your Shopify Payments account country up in the finder above; if it isn't on the method's list, no setting will bring the method in.
Before you tick this off
- My account country is on the method's list, or the method sets a store rule I meet
- The method isn't Przelewy24, which is closed to new activations
Finish identity verification and the business details the method asks for: business type or category, tax identification and a matching legal name.
Before you tick this off
- Identity verification is complete
- My business type or category isn't excluded by the method
- Tax ID and legal name are filled in where the method needs them
Remove password protection or private mode and publish the pages the method checks, such as a legal notice or Klarna's storefront information.
Before you tick this off
- The online store is accessible without a password
- The legal notice, terms, policies or storefront details the method lists are published
Deactivate any additional payment gateway that conflicts with the method, and keep its payment app installed rather than uninstalling it.
Before you tick this off
- No conflicting additional payment gateway is active
- The deactivated payment app is still installed
Confirm the method is enabled, approved or past its review in your Payments settings, and whether it is in early access for your store.
Before you tick this off
- The method shows as active under Local payment methods
- Any review or approval it needed has finished
- I know whether the method is in early access for my store
Make sure the buyer's country sits in an active market whose currency the method accepts, such as EUR for Spain or PLN for Poland.
Before you tick this off
- The buyer's country is in an active market
- That market's currency is one the method accepts
- On a multi-entity store, the market's entity has that currency as its Default payout currency
Run a checkout with an address and currency from the buyer's country, an email address and an order or payment amount inside the method's limits.
Before you tick this off
- The test checkout uses that country's address and currency
- I checked out with an email address, not a phone number
- The order or payment amount is inside the method's limits
Without Shopify Payments
Key takeaway
To activate Multibanco for your online store, you need to use Shopify Payments, and the same holds for every method in this guide. A store on another gateway can still reach some of the same buyers through a provider of its own, set up as an additional payment method.
That route has its own costs: additional payment methods can still carry third-party transaction fees, provider fees or Shopify Payments fees, depending on the method and your contract. Our FAQs map the route for three methods:
- Accepting MB WAY without Shopify Payments
- Accepting Multibanco without Shopify Payments
- Offering meses sin intereses without Shopify Payments
If what your buyers want is a plain bank transfer, our FAQ covers whether a Shopify customer can pay by bank transfer.
The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
Local payment methods come with Shopify Payments itself, and their orders land in the same payouts as card sales. What decides whether a buyer sees one is a short chain of rules, and every link in it is on a page you can check.
