Can a Shopify customer pay by bank transfer?

At a glance
Short answer
Yes, as a manual payment method: you arrange the transfer outside checkout and mark the order paid yourself; iDEAL and Bancontact are automatic.
Not the same as iDEAL
iDEAL is an automatic Shopify Payments method taken at checkout; a transfer you confirm yourself is manual.
Status before you record it
Unpaid on the Orders page until you record the payment; the money side sits in a Payment pending section.
No automatic matching
No page we read on September 8, 2026 describes Shopify matching incoming bank deposits to orders.
Where it will not appear
Not shown at checkout on B2B orders with payment terms, or where the location submits all orders as drafts.

How does Shopify classify a bank transfer?

Not as a gateway. Shopify files bank transfers under manual payment methods, beside cash on delivery and money orders.

When your customers use a manual payment method, you can arrange to receive their payment in a way that works best for them.

Shopify names it again in the B2B docs: for orders that can't be paid by credit card, a manual method such as bank transfer is one of the options Shopify documents.

Two cases hide it at checkout: orders with payment terms, and a company location set to submit all orders as drafts for review — in the drafts case the buyer can still pay by a manual method once you review the draft order and send an invoice.

Is iDEAL or Bancontact the same as a bank transfer?

No — and the shared wording is why the two get mixed up. Shopify uses the phrase a second time inside Shopify Payments, where it labels a category of automatic methods.

Bank transfer and direct debit methods let customers pay directly from their bank account at checkout.

Six methods sit in that category: Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero, EPS, Przelewy24, ACH Direct Debit and Multibanco. You activate them with Shopify Payments, not as a manual method of your own.

The difference is who takes the money: iDEAL processing begins by redirecting the customer to a payment website and back to the Shopify checkout, and Shopify Payments collects the payment — not a method you arrange.

What happens in your admin when the money arrives?

Nothing, until you record it. Shopify marks orders that accept manual payments as unpaid on the Orders page, and the money side sits in a Payment pending section: click Collect payment, then Mark as paid. Which label means what is a separate question.

The matching is yours. No page we read on September 8, 2026 describes Shopify matching incoming bank deposits to orders — not manual payments, third-party transaction fees, the Shopify Payments activity report or Shopify's payments product page.

The fee line compensates: no third-party transaction fee applies to manual payment methods, as our cash-on-delivery answer works through.
