Open Shopify's payment settings and you meet three buttons: Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Most merchants hesitate — will an extra button add a fee, break checkout, or just confuse shoppers? This guide gives you the honest answer, what each wallet requires, what the conversion data actually says, and exactly which to switch on for your store.

Express Wallets on Shopify Checkout: The Short Answer

Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are all accelerated (express) checkouts: they store a returning shopper's payment and shipping details so a purchase takes a tap instead of a form. Shopify's own definition is deliberately plain:

Once you turn a wallet on, it can surface in three places. Keeping these straight makes the rest of the article easier to follow.

That split matters for the fear in the back of your mind. Turning wallets on at checkout and in the cart is safe — it doesn't change your existing flow and adds no fee. The only genuine decision comes later: whether to also show accelerated buttons on the product page, where they skip the cart. We weigh that one trade-off in detail below.

Shop Pay vs Shop app vs Shopify Payments vs Shop Cash

Half the confusion here is naming. People search “shop pay vs shopify” and “shop cash vs shop pay” because four similar names describe four different things. Only one of them is a wallet you enable at checkout.

The Three Wallets, Head to Head

Shop Pay is Shopify's own accelerated checkout, and unlike the other two it isn't tied to a specific OS or browser vendor. Apple Pay is bound to Safari and Apple hardware; Google Pay to a supported-browser list led by Chrome. Because they overlap only partly, they complement rather than replace each other. What Each Wallet Requires

Each wallet has its own entry requirements, and this is where merchants most often trip. Read the one that matches the wallet you're unsure about.

Shop Pay: needs Shopify Payments

In the standard setup, Shop Pay is part of Shopify Payments — transactions process at your Shopify Payments rates, and your store must be in a country where Shopify Payments is available. There is one carve-out: merchants in Australia, France, or the United States can offer Shop Pay through a third-party gateway. Everywhere else, Shopify Payments has to be active. Apple Pay: Safari, iOS and SSL

Apple Pay's key store-side requirement is SSL active on your domain — without it the button won't appear — plus running Apple Pay through Shopify Payments or a third-party provider that supports it. The device side is familiar: a shopper completes a purchase using a Mac with Touch ID, an iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or an Apple Watch, and in third-party browsers by scanning a QR code with an iPhone or iPad. Apple also notes plainly that Apple Pay isn't available in all areas, and in mainland China it's supported only in Safari on iOS.

Google Pay: Chrome, Android and your gateway

Google Pay's store-side gate is your gateway: you need a credit card provider that lists Google Pay as an available method, served over HTTPS with a valid TLS certificate. Shopify Payments supports it in every region except France, and as the merchant you agree to follow the Google Pay API Terms of Service. Reach is broadest in Chrome and on Android, though it also runs in Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and UC Browser — only Chrome uses the standard Payment Request API.

Shopify doesn't publish a closed list of compatible gateways
There is no official, fixed list of the third-party gateways that support Apple Pay or Google Pay. Shopify's troubleshooting pages point to general provider requirements and to a dynamic filter of 100-plus payment providers, not a static roster. If a blog hands you a confident “these exact gateways work” list, treat it with caution and verify against your own provider — the honest answer is that it depends on the gateway, and only your gateway can confirm it.

Do Express Wallets Cost Extra?

This is the fear that stops most merchants, so let's settle it: the wallets add no fee of their own. You continue to pay the standard processing rate of your provider. On Shopify Payments, a Basic-plan online sale is charged at 2.9% + 30¢ whether the shopper pays with a wallet or a typed-in card. Shopify states it directly for Apple Pay:

The same holds for Google Pay: you pay the normal processing fees of your payment provider and nothing on top. Don't confuse this with the third-party transaction fee — the surcharge Shopify adds when you process through a provider other than Shopify Payments. What Express Wallets Actually Do for Conversion

Express wallets attack the exact friction that kills checkouts: retyping details and being forced to create an account. That matters, because 19% of shoppers abandon a checkout when forced to create an account. A saved wallet lets a returning buyer skip that wall entirely.

On the headline number, Shopify reports that Shop Pay delivers up to 50% higher conversion than guest checkout, and at least 10% above other accelerated checkouts — but that lift comes from an external study whose method Shopify hasn't published.

Read the conversion number honestly
The “up to 50%” figure is based on an external study with a “Big Three” global management consulting firm, completed in April 2023. The methodology and sample were not disclosed, and “up to” is a ceiling, not a promise. Use it as directional evidence that Shop Pay helps — not as a number to forecast revenue against.

Adoption is real either way: 1 in 5 buyers choose Shop Pay at checkout, and Shopify says 43% of buyers already trust and use it as their preferred method. What you won't find here are the “Shop Pay converts 1.72x” and “Apple Pay doubles mobile conversion” claims that circulate on other blogs — neither has a primary source, so we don't repeat them. Note too that Shopify's broader “15% higher conversion than the competition” line is about Shopify Checkout overall, not Shop Pay specifically.

Which Wallets Should You Enable?

For the large majority of stores, the answer is turn all three on. They're free and complementary, so there's rarely a reason to leave coverage on the table. What changes by store is which wallet touches the most of your shoppers — and that follows your traffic.

Mobile is now the majority of online buying: 56.4% of online transactions happened on a smartphone in the 2025 holiday season. Within US mobile, iOS holds roughly 58% and Android roughly 42% of the market. So an iOS-heavy audience makes Apple Pay your highest-reach button, an Android-heavy one favors Google Pay — and Shop Pay covers everyone regardless.

How to Enable Each Wallet

Why a wallet isn't showing

When Accelerated Buttons Work Against You

Enabling wallets at checkout is almost always right. The one judgment call is whether to show accelerated buttons on product pages. These only work for a single product variant, and Shopify lists them as incompatible with currency converters, apps that interact with the cart, and apps that send customers to an external checkout — and with cart attributes like terms-and-conditions checkboxes, gift-wrapping, and delivery-date pickers. Because they skip the cart, they also skip anything you sell there.

Keep accelerated buttons on product pages when…
  • Most of your traffic is mobile and buys a single item at a time.
  • Your product pages don't depend on cart-based upsells, bundles, or free-shipping thresholds.
  • You sell single-variant products where one tap to checkout genuinely helps the shopper.
Turn them off (checkout-only) when…
  • Your revenue leans on order bumps, gift options, or a free-shipping or minimum-order threshold — the button skips the cart and all of it.
  • You use apps that modify the cart, a currency converter, or an external checkout — accelerated buttons aren't compatible.
  • You need cart attributes like terms checkboxes, gift-wrapping, or delivery-date pickers to complete an order.

Stores on Shopify Plus have a middle path: a custom app can hide accelerated options during checkout when certain customer or cart conditions are met — useful when only some of your orders need the cart. For everyone else, the choice is on or off at the product-page level.

The Bottom Line

There isn't a hard trade-off to agonize over here. For a standard store on Shopify Payments, all three wallets cost nothing extra and each reaches shoppers the others miss, so the default is simply to switch them on. The judgment lives in the details: confirm every button actually renders, and decide deliberately whether product-page accelerated buttons help or quietly bypass the cart you sell from.

The one thing that burns people: a wallet that's enabled but never renders. Test on a real iOS Safari and Android Chrome session after any theme or checkout change — an invisible button converts no one.
