The short version
Turn on Shopify pickup in store location by location: go to Settings › Shipping and delivery, click Pickup in store, open a location, activate Let customers pick up orders directly at this location, select a processing time, enter pickup instructions and click Save.
You need a location that fulfills online orders and the latest version of checkout, and POS Pro isn't among the requirements Shopify's setup page lists.
If pickup isn't showing at checkout, check stock and country first: by default, pickup is available only when the entire order is in stock at the pickup location, and customers can view pickup locations only in their country.
You mark orders as ready for pickup and as picked up in the admin, while managing them in Shopify POS takes a POS Pro location.
Pickup in store lets customers order online and collect the order at one of your retail locations, and you turn it on for each location from your Shopify admin. This guide takes you from the first setting to the first order handed over. Already turned it on and pickup isn't showing? Go straight to why pickup isn't showing at checkout.
Shopify's Help Center calls the feature Pickup in store, and its changelog also says local pickup; this guide treats them as one thing. Pickup points are something else: orders ship to third-party locations through a carrier, and they get a short section of their own below.
What You Need Before You Turn On Pickup
Key takeaway
Shopify's pickup in store page lists two requirements for setting it up in your admin:
- At least one location that fulfills online orders.
- The latest version of checkout. If your store isn't on it, an upgrade notice is displayed in Settings › Checkout.
Neither is a plan or an add-on. No page we read in November 2026 among Shopify's help pages on pickup in store, ship and pickup, B2B shipping methods, pickup points, location fulfillment and local delivery lists POS Pro as a condition for turning pickup on in the admin; the POS Pro requirement sits on the POS page, for managing pickup orders in POS.
A location counts when Use inventory at this location to fulfill online orders is on in its Fulfillment section. With that option activated, you can view and activate delivery methods for the location.

How Do You Turn On Pickup in Store?
Key takeaway
You set up pickup in store for each location where customers can pick up their orders. Shopify's steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings › Shipping and delivery.
- In the Additional delivery methods section, click Pickup in store.
- Settings
- Shipping and delivery
- Click the location that you want to activate pickup in store for.
- Settings
- Shipping and delivery
- Pickup in store
- In the Location status section, activate the Let customers pick up orders directly at this location option.
- In the Expected pickup date section, select a processing time from the drop-down menu. Customers see this.
- Optional: in the Store transfers section, select locations to transfer inventory from (see store transfers below).
- Settings
- Shipping and delivery
- Pickup in store
- Location
- In the Ready for pickup notification section, enter pickup instructions for your customers.
- Optional: in the Checkout preview section, preview how the pickup option displays at checkout.
- Click Save.
- Settings
- Shipping and delivery
- Pickup in store
- Location
If a label in your admin differs from these steps, see what our development store showed. Stores on the Shopify Plus plan can also replace the default feature with a custom app, which this guide doesn't cover.
Choosing the Expected Pickup Date
The processing time you select is displayed at checkout, so treat it as a promise: pick what your staff at that location can actually meet, not what you would like to manage on a good day. Each location has its own, and a store transfer can have a separate one. The setup page doesn't list the values; our test section lists the ones we saw.
Turning Pickup Off at a Location
To stop offering pickup at a location, go to Settings › Shipping and delivery, open Pickup in store, click the location and turn off pickup in store, confirming if your admin asks. Orders already set for pickup there still get that location's instructions in their notification, even after the option is deactivated.
What Customers See
Key takeaway
Two surfaces change once a location offers pickup: checkout, always, and the product page, if your theme supports it.
At Checkout
Key takeaway
After you activate pickup in store, customers can choose between Ship and Pick up in the Delivery section of checkout. When they select Pick up, they can choose the location where they want to pick up their order. They can view pickup locations only in their country, and Shopify says they can change their country by clicking Change my location.
Per the April 21, 2026 checkout update, checkout displays the first available pickup location, selecting pickup shows the nearest location with item availability, a modal displays the full list, and pickup only appears when items are pickup eligible, including when there are available pickup locations in the buyer's country. No action is required for this layout, though Shopify suggests you review your checkout extension configuration if you have customized checkout.
What a pickup costs the customer is a separate question, answered in our guide to Shopify shipping rates.
If your pickup location is your home, read first which of your addresses shoppers can see.
On the Product Page
Key takeaway
The pickup availability section tells customers whether a product is available and the estimated time frame. What it shows depends on how many locations offer pickup:
- One pickup location: that location and its availability, with View store information.
- More than one: the availability at one of your stores, with Check availability at other stores.
- With store transfers: products available through a transfer display as available for pickup, with an adjusted estimated pickup time.
Shopify lists the section as currently available in Dawn, the Horizon family of themes and multiple paid themes. For what else your storefront can tell shoppers about your locations, see what Shopify shows shoppers instead of a store locator.
The Ready for Pickup Email
Key takeaway
Two places control what this email says, and they don't carry equal weight:
- The location's instructions, in the Ready for pickup notification section of its pickup form. Each location has its own.
- The notification template, at Settings › Notifications › Ready for pickup. It is shared by the store, and the Shopify pages we read name it two ways: Ready for pickup, and Ready for local pickup in the Local pick up section of Customer notifications.
- Settings
- Notifications
- Customer notifications
Location-specific pickup instructions override the general notification template, and the location field replaces any customizations in the template's email_body variable. If customers get different text from your template, edit the location's instructions, or remove the {{ pickup_instructions }} variable from the template.
Two more things to know about this email:
- Facebook & Instagram orders don't get it, so Shopify says to contact those customers directly.
- If your store uses customized notification templates, you might need to update this one manually for it to work with Shopify Tax.
Your staff can get the New order email notification, which Shopify sends when a customer places an order; Shopify's POS pickup page links to the staff notifications page for online pickup orders.
Fulfilling Pickup Orders
Key takeaway
The job is the same in both places: set the items aside, tell the customer, and record the handover. The admin route comes with pickup in store itself; the POS route adds tools for a team at the counter.
In the Shopify Admin
Key takeaway
To mark an order as ready for pickup:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.
- Click the pickup in store order that you want to fulfill.
- Optional: if a transfer is required, click Transfer to pickup location when you make the preparations. You can undo this only by transferring the items manually. A Transfer required badge next to the pickup location tells you this applies.
- Click Ready for pickup.
- Click Mark as ready for pickup.

- Prepare for pickup
You can view or resend the email from the order timeline. After your customer picks up the order:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Orders and click the order.
- Click Mark as picked up.
- Optional: to send the Picked up by customer confirmation email, choose the option to notify the customer.
- Click Mark as picked up to mark the order as fulfilled.

In Shopify POS
Key takeaway
Shopify's POS pickup page opens with a plan requirement: the feature is available only for locations currently on the POS Pro subscription. The subscription table agrees, with Pickup in store marked for POS Pro and not for the features included with all paid plans.
POS Pro costs $89 per month per location on month-to-month billing, in USD, and the first 20 POS Pro locations are included in all Shopify Plus plans; past 20, a cost waiver depends on Shopify Payments. For what else the add-on brings, see our POS Pro guide. Here is what each route offers for pickup:
The same pickup jobs in the admin and in POS
| Job | Shopify admin | Shopify POS (POS Pro location) |
|---|---|---|
| Hear about a new pickup order | The general New order staff email; Shopify's POS pickup page links to the staff notifications page for online pickup orders | Push notifications on the device, through the Order notifications setting |
| Prepare the order and tell the customer | Ready for pickup, then Mark as ready for pickup | Ready for pickup, set the items aside, optionally print a pickup slip, then Send notification |
| Hand the order over | Mark as picked up, with an optional confirmation email | Mark as picked up, with an optional email or text confirmation |
| Take a pickup order at the register | There's no register in the admin, but on a draft order you create there that requires shipping, you can choose pickup in store | The Pickup all items tile; subscriptions aren't supported and gift cards can't be picked up |
| Edit a pickup order | Yes, in the admin or on the Shopify mobile app | No |
Shopify Help Center pages on pickup in store, draft orders, staff notifications and managing pickup in store orders in Shopify POS, read November 4, 2026.
If nobody takes pickup orders at the register or works from a POS device, the admin covers the job, so start there and add POS Pro only at locations where staff will manage orders in POS.
Staff who fulfill in POS need the Fulfill shipping and pickup orders permission, as the Help Center names it; our test section has the wording we saw. If you have more than one pickup location on POS Pro, staff creating an order in the POS cart can change its pickup location when the device runs POS version 11.8 or later, the stock is available there and the location is in the same country as the POS location.

How Do You Offer Pickup When Stock Is at Another Location?
Key takeaway
Without store transfers, one rule decides whether pickup appears for an order. In Shopify's words:
By default, pickup in store is available only when the entire order is in stock at the pickup location.
If you have several locations, store transfers move inventory from one or more of them to the pickup location. To set them up:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings › Shipping and delivery.
- In the Additional delivery methods section, click Pickup in store.
- Click a location that you want to set up store transfers for.
- In the Store transfers section, select the locations that you want to transfer inventory from when inventory is unavailable at the pickup location.
- Optional: select Set a different processing time at checkout when a store transfer is needed, and then select a processing time.
- Click Save.
- Settings
- Shipping and delivery
- Pickup in store
- Location
If no single location can transfer all of the inventory, multiple transfers are created for the order, and locations closest to the pickup location with available inventory are prioritized. For how transfers work beyond pickup, see our multi-location inventory guide.
Keeping Large Items Out of Transfers
Key takeaway
Some products are too large to move between locations. You can exclude product collections, but not specific products, so create the collection first, and keep it out of your sales channels if you don't want customers to see it. Then:
- Go to Settings › Shipping and delivery and click Pickup in store in the Additional delivery methods section.
- In the Transfer exclusions section, add the collections that you want to exclude and confirm.
- Click Save.
- Settings
- Shipping and delivery
- Pickup in store
Moving Items on an Order by Hand
Key takeaway
Use this when you can't fulfill the order or the automatically chosen location for a transfer isn't possible:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Orders and click the pickup in store order.
- In the Unfulfilled section, click the horizontal menu button and then Change location.
- Select the items to choose a new location for, and select the new location.
- Click Change location.

Can Customers Ship Some Items and Pick Up Others?
Key takeaway
This matters if you plan to tell customers they can collect part of an order. Both pages were live on November 4, 2026. The pickup in store page lists this among its considerations, with no plan condition on the sentence:
A customer can choose to have some items shipped and some items picked up in the same order.
The ship and pickup page, written for the feature, says something narrower: ship and pickup in one order is available only as a feature test drive for organizations on the Shopify Plus and Enterprise plans. It adds that the feature will release for all organizations on Shopify Plus on July 1, 2027, which is still ahead as of November 2026.
Shopify's June 17, 2026 changelog also names Plus and Enterprise: "Merchants on Plus and Enterprise plans can now offer customers the flexibility to select shipping and store pickup for different items within a single checkout. Previously, customers had to create separate orders for each delivery method."
A plan note under the pickup in store page's considerations list covers only stores that activated the test drive: it says they must have at least 1 location set to offer in-store pickup.
What to do while the two help pages disagree: let your own checkout decide. Run a test checkout with one item you stock at the pickup location and one you don't, and don't promise a split order in your policies or on your storefront until it offers one. We ran that cart on a development store: see our test.
The next part applies only to organizations on Plus or Enterprise; on another plan, skip to B2B buyers and pickup points.
What Changes With the Test Drive
Key takeaway
You activate the test drive from Settings › Feature test drives by finding Ship and pickup in one order, clicking Activate feature on stores, selecting your stores in the dialog and clicking Save. Shopify's Feature test drives page says they are available only for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan, while the ship and pickup page names Plus and Enterprise, so look for the feature in your own admin. Shopify says permissions for feature test drives default to the organization owner.
The considerations to plan around, from the ship and pickup page:
- Locations: you need at least 1 location activated for in-store pickup and 1 for shipping, and each order can have only 1 pickup location.
- Other methods: pickup points and local delivery aren't supported as options in a checkout with mixed delivery methods.
- Checkout default: all items are set to be shipped, and customers choose the Pickup tab to change that.
- Shipping and tax: by default, flat rates are based on the order total regardless of pickup items, and shipped and pickup items can be taxed differently.
- Operations: orders generate separate fulfillments grouped by delivery method, and third-party apps that touch orders or fulfillment might require updates.
- B2B: if you offer in-store pickup to B2B customers, only locations that offer it to both B2B and non-B2B customers can support split delivery methods in one order.
- The end date: after the testing period ends on July 1, 2027, the feature automatically becomes active for all eligible stores and can no longer be deactivated.
Shopify says to place test orders after you activate it, and to test the checkout before rolling out the feature to customers.
B2B Buyers and Pickup Points
Key takeaway
Both sit next to pickup in store, and each has its own page on this site.
B2B Customers
Per Shopify's B2B shipping page, pickup in store is turned off by default for Shopify B2B, and the store or organization owner must contact Shopify Support to request it. In a blended store, both B2B and D2C customers can then choose it. Our FAQ covers how to switch it on for B2B.
Pickup Points
Pickup points ship orders to a carrier's location, most often a place like a local post office, rather than to your own store. Shopify says the feature is currently only available to stores in France, Italy, Spain and the UK, and to eligible stores on the Shopify Plus plan. See whether you can offer pickup points at checkout.
Why Isn't Pickup Showing at Checkout?
Key takeaway
The Pickup option doesn't appear, checkout says no locations are available, or a customer gets an error asking for a shipping address. Each of these has a documented cause on Shopify's pages:
Pickup problems, causes and where to fix them
| What you see | Likely cause | Where to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout shows There are no pickup locations available | No pickup location in the customer's country; customers can view pickup locations only in their country | Turn on pickup at a location in that country; Shopify says a customer can change their country by clicking Change my location |
| No pickup option for some carts | The entire order isn't in stock at the pickup location, or the items aren't pickup eligible | Check the stock at that location, or set up store transfers |
| A location isn't offered | Pickup isn't activated at that location, or the location doesn't fulfill online orders | The Pickup in store list in Settings, then the location's Fulfillment section |
| Your order isn't available for pickup. Enter a shipping address | No shipping zone is associated with the pickup location; Not shipping from might display next to it | Settings › Shipping and delivery, with the steps below |
| A B2B customer has no pickup option | Pickup in store is turned off by default for Shopify B2B | The store or organization owner contacts Shopify Support |
Shopify Help Center pages on pickup in store, location fulfillment and B2B shipping methods, and the Shopify Changelog entry on checkout, read November 4, 2026.
Shopify's fix for the shipping zone error doesn't involve adding an actual rate:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings › Shipping and delivery.
- In the shipping zone for your pickup location, click Add rate and then New rate.
- Click Done without adding any actual shipping rates.
On the shipping zone itself, Shopify says:
The zone itself needs to exist for the pickup location to work properly.
If the error is about the customer's address rather than your location, see whether an address qualifies for local delivery or pickup.
Accelerated checkouts are worth a look, though the evidence is thin. If you suspect them, compare a normal checkout with an accelerated one in your own store. No page we read in November 2026, among Shopify's help pages on pickup in store, ship and pickup, pickup points, local delivery, B2B shipping methods and B2B considerations, Shop Pay and accelerated checkouts, names an accelerated checkout as the reason pickup in store disappears.
Shopify's local delivery page does say that when you rely on local delivery or pickup for the majority of your business, you can temporarily deactivate your accelerated checkouts.
Shopify's Shop Pay page says that if your store offers pickup in store or local delivery, then customers can choose that option during checkout when using Shop Pay.
What Our Development Store Showed
Key takeaway
We tested one Shopify development store on November 4, 2026, on the Dawn theme, with one pickup location, which showed a POS Pro badge in the admin, store transfers off and no ship and pickup test drive available in that store, using test products and a test order.
The main text of this guide follows Shopify's Help Center, read the same day. One result changes what you should do: the mixed cart. The second table records values and wording on our screens, so you can find the control.
Checkout results against the Help Center
| Help Center says (read November 4, 2026) | What our development store showed | If your store shows the same |
|---|---|---|
| A customer can choose to have some items shipped and some items picked up in the same order | A cart with one item stocked at the pickup location and one stocked elsewhere: the Pickup tab showed 1 item can't be picked up and Remove item; the Ship tab showed the address form, with no choice per item | Don't tell customers they can split an order until your checkout offers it |
| On the ship and pickup page: for items that can't be picked up, the checkout presents the options to ship them separately or remove them | With no test drive in the store, the Pickup tab's only option for that item was Remove item; nothing offered to ship it separately | Don't count on shipping it separately without the test drive |
| By default, pickup is available only when the entire order is in stock at the pickup location | This matched for a cart holding only the item stocked elsewhere: no Ship or Pickup tabs, just the address form. The mixed cart above did show the Pickup tab, but only with Remove item | Try one item you don't stock at the pickup location, so the missing tabs don't surprise you |

One test on a Shopify development store, November 4, 2026; Shopify Help Center pickup in store, Shopify Tax notification and POS pickup pages read the same day.
This is one store on one day, so it doesn't prove every store behaves the same. We didn't test a Shopify Plus store, the test drive, several pickup locations, a pickup location without POS Pro, store transfers in action, the POS app, the email as a delivered message or the There are no pickup locations available message.
Set Up Pickup in This Order
Key takeaway
Step five matters only if stock is spread between locations, and step six is the one that tells you what your checkout really does with a mixed cart.

Tick each step as you finish it; your progress stays in this browser.
In Settings › Locations, check that Use inventory at this location to fulfill online orders is on, and that your store uses the latest version of checkout.
Before you tick this off
- The option is on for every location that will offer pickup
- No checkout upgrade notice is displayed in Settings › Checkout
In Settings › Shipping and delivery › Pickup in store, open each location and activate Let customers pick up orders directly at this location.
Before you tick this off
- Each location that should offer pickup is activated
- Locations that shouldn't offer it are left off
Select the processing time in the Expected pickup date section, since customers see it.
Before you tick this off
- Staff at each pickup location can have orders ready in that time
Enter pickup instructions for each location and click Save when the location's form is complete, then read the Ready for pickup template in Settings › Notifications (Shopify's pages also call it Ready for local pickup).
Before you tick this off
- The instructions say what to bring and where to go
- The Checkout preview section looks right
- Any custom email_body text was moved or dropped, since the pickup instructions field replaces it
- If your notification templates are customized and you use Shopify Tax, the Ready for pickup template was checked against Shopify's update steps
If stock is spread between locations, select the locations to transfer from in the pickup location's form and click Save, then add any collections to exclude under Transfer exclusions on the Pickup in store page and click Save.
Before you tick this off
- Source locations are selected, or you decided pickup needs stock on hand
- Any items too large to move are in an excluded collection, kept out of your sales channels if customers shouldn't see it
Run a checkout with an item stocked at the pickup location, one with an item that isn't, and one that mixes the two.
Before you tick this off
- Pickup shows the location and processing time you expect
- You know what your checkout does with the item that can't be picked up
- Store policies promise only what the checkout does
Mark a test order as ready for pickup, read the email, and then mark it as picked up.
Before you tick this off
- The Ready for pickup email arrived with your instructions
- Staff know who marks orders ready and who hands them over
The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
The settings are quick. What takes care is the promise around them: a processing time your staff can meet, instructions that say what to bring, and a checkout you have tried yourself.
