Which order notifications does Shopify send you by default?

Account owners receive the New order email on all new orders by default: Shopify sends it when a customer places an order. Staff notifications in the admin cover six email events as of October 2026, among them:

  • New order — every order a customer places; orders flagged by fraud analysis are highlighted in it.
  • New draft order — when a customer submits a draft order; only the store owner gets it.
  • Order dispute updates — sent to staff members only.
  • Store order summary — its default schedule is every Monday, and you can change the day or set it to daily instead; recipients who have it turned on get it regardless of their order or location permissions; Shopify announced it on November 3, 2025.

Shopify Help names the other two events New return request and Sales attribution ended. The Staff notifications page we checked in a development store in October 2026 shows New change request and Sales attribution edited instead, so go by the list in your own admin.

None of the six is about stock levels; low-stock alerts run through Shopify Flow. Flow, a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, also has templates for narrower order alerts: an internal email when a B2B company places an order, or when a specific discount code is used.

Staff emails are also separate from what your customer receives: the order confirmation is a customer notification, and its template is edited on its own.

How do you add someone else to new-order emails?

Whoever changes these settings needs the Orders and Manage settings permissions. A recipient can be a staff member or any email address you enter.

  2. Notifications
  3. Staff notifications
Step 1: the + Recipient button sits above the recipient list, below the staff events.
  1. In the Recipients section, click + Recipient (Shopify Help calls it Add recipient).
  2. Choose a staff member, or select Email address and enter the address that should get the notifications.
  3. Optional: if the Point of Sale channel is installed, pick a POS location or the web to get alerts only for orders from there.
  4. Click Add recipient to save it. After that, for a recipient added by email address, you can click Send test notification; the test email includes fake order and customer information.

For more than one specific location, add a separate recipient entry for each location. You can also edit a recipient to receive only some of the events, or turn a recipient off temporarily instead of deleting it.

In the Shopify mobile app, the same screen sits under Menu > Settings > Notifications > Staff notifications.

How do you get a sale alert on your phone?

A phone alert comes from the Shopify mobile app, which can notify you when a new order comes in. Its push notifications cover five store updates as of October 2026: critical alerts, fulfillments, new orders, setup tips and Timeline mentions.

Turning New orders on in the app is only half the job: notifications must also be allowed in your device's main settings.

Push and sale sound on each phone
iPhone
  • Menu > Settings > App settings > Store notifications > Push notifications
  • Once order push is on, the app badge can show your open orders, for one store only
  • No per-app notification sound: iOS doesn't support individual app sound settings
Android
  • Each push option in the Shopify app has its own toggle
  • Custom app sounds are set through the device's own settings
  • Shopify Cha-Ching comes in via the Install Shopify Sounds prompt

The app's home-screen widget gets real-time order updates only while New order push notifications are on for your store.

As of October 2026, none of the Help Center pages we read on staff notifications, order details and the Shopify app describes a sales-channel filter for push alerts, or new-order notifications in the browser admin. On those pages, the POS location filter appears only in the staff email settings.

Why do Shopify order notifications stop arriving?

An order shows up in the admin but no email follows, or your phone has gone quiet for sales.

First check: the spam folder
Look in the spam or junk folder: that is Shopify's first advice when staff aren't receiving email notifications. For a recipient added by email address, you can also click Send test notification.

If notification emails still don't arrive:

  • Give the recipient an alternate address with a different email provider.
  • Check that the recipient isn't turned off; a deactivated recipient stays on the list.

If push alerts stopped, check three things on the phone:

  • Notifications are allowed in the device's main settings.
  • The device is still listed under your store's admin settings; it drops off when deleted, when the app is uninstalled, or when push is turned off in the app.
  • Push notifications are allowed to run in the background.

To reactivate push on iOS, toggle New Orders and Timeline Mentions off and on again, then force close and reopen the Shopify app. On Android, log out, clear the app's cache and data, reinstall it, log back in, and send a test notification from your Shopify admin.
