What a location needs first

Shopify's changelog announced on September 28, 2026 that staff can create local delivery orders at checkout in Shopify POS. Each location needs:

POS uses the delivery zones and rates you already set up for your online store.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Settings
  2. Shipping and delivery
  3. Local delivery
For the location selling delivery at the counter, switch on Deliver orders to customers directly from this location.

How the sale works at checkout

Add shipping to the cart: if the customer's address is in a delivery zone, Local delivery appears among your rates. Select it, confirm the phone number, add any delivery instructions and check out. Four rules apply:

  • every physical item must be delivered;
  • no mixing local delivery with shipping or pickup in one order;
  • gift cards and digital items are allowed;
  • delivery stays within the location's country.

None of the Shopify pages we read on October 17, 2026 — the changelog post and Help Center pages on POS local delivery orders, local delivery setup and fulfillment, POS tax rates and tax overrides — says how tax works on these orders. For contrast, see which POS orders let you turn tax off.

Staff permissions and after the sale

Shopify renamed the permission with this release:

To create local delivery orders, staff need Create shipping and delivery orders (previously Ship to customer).

On October 18, 2026, our development store's role editor listed it under Point of Sale › Checkout, while Shopify's POS permissions help page, read October 17, still said Ship to customer.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Settings
  2. Users
  3. Roles
In a Point of Sale role, open Checkout and switch on Create shipping and delivery orders.

Fulfilling now needs Fulfill shipping, pickup, and delivery orders, previously not required for local delivery, so check the roles of staff who already deliver (who can manage POS staff).

After the sale, staff prepare and fulfill the order in POS like an online local delivery order; to cancel a delivery, use the Shopify admin.
