Regular POS cart
Has a tax switch for the whole order or one item; EU stores might not be able to use it.

Which Shopify POS orders let you turn tax off

Not Ship to customer orders. Ship to customer works only at locations on a Shopify POS Pro subscription, and its help page says:

Ship to customer orders can't turn taxes on or off for the entire order or for individual items.
Shopify Help Center — Adding shipping to an order ·

A regular POS cart has the switch: from Taxes in the cart, turn tax rates on or off for all items or a single product, which suits a customer who carries the item out. EU-based stores might not be able to.

How to sell without tax when the order ships

Make the customer tax-exempt. Shopify's tax overrides page says tax exempt customers aren't charged any tax when they check out with the email on their customer account. Shopify's help calls this Manage tax settings; our dev store shows Edit tax details. No Shopify page on exemptions or POS shipping that we read in October 2026 says the exemption covers Ship to customer orders, so check the cart's tax line before payment.

  4. Edit tax details
Tax-exempt route: under Tax settings choose Don't collect tax, then click Save.
Tax-included prices stay full

With tax-included pricing, a tax-exempt customer is still charged the full listed product price.

Or use an admin draft order and deselect Charge taxes (how tax works on a draft). Add a product first: in our dev store, Estimated tax opened only after that.

Draft route: clear Charge taxes in this pop-up, then Done; this dev store's market shows Ukrainian VAT.

What decides the tax on a Ship to customer order

No Shopify POS or tax page we read in October 2026 says whether this tax follows the shipping address or your location. The POS app generally taxes by the store location assigned to your device. For orders shipping to customers in the United States, tax has been calculated from the fulfillment location your order routing settings select since August 24, 2026, but that entry doesn't name POS.

Changing the shipping address in the admin later recalculates the tax on unfulfilled orders since August 13, 2026; that update doesn't mention POS.
