The short version
Connect Shopify to Pinterest with the free Pinterest app from the Shopify App Store: it claims your website, installs the Pinterest tag and Conversions API, connects your Shopify product feed and generates Product Pins from it.
Before you start you need a Pinterest business account, an advertiser account and owner rights, and one store connects to one Pinterest business account at a time.
Pinterest's troubleshooting page says the Shopify feed updates every 24 hours (the app listing says near real-time), and Pinterest will not advertise your products until you choose to create ads.
When Pins are missing, catalog diagnostics lists the issues, and code 4057 means some items from your Shopify store have not been published on Pinterest; Pinterest's fix is to make sure they are active and available to the Pinterest sales channel in Shopify.
Pinterest's own sales channel for Shopify: it connects your Pinterest business account, claims your website, installs the tag and syncs your catalog.

What the Shopify Pinterest Integration Is
Key takeaway
The Shopify side of the connection is one app, Pinterest, listed on the Shopify App Store since February 18, 2020. The listing names who stands behind it: app support is provided by PINTEREST inc, not by Shopify.
The listing describes the job in one line: install it to connect your Pinterest account, quickly publish Product Pins, automatically update your product catalog every day, and track performance with the Pinterest Tag. It is free to install, and the listing adds that additional charges may apply; its pricing line says Pinterest charges only when ads are purchased.
Although you find it in the App Store, you will not find it under Apps afterwards. Shopify files every channel installed this way in the same place:
Although some sales channels are installed through the Shopify App Store, they're displayed in your Shopify admin as Sales channels and not as Apps.
That makes Pinterest a different kind of channel from Meta's. Shopify's social commerce section lists three channels — Facebook and Instagram by Meta, TikTok Shop and Roblox — and Pinterest is not one of them; our guide to selling on Instagram through Shopify follows the first. The steps below come from two places: Shopify's Help Center for the admin side, and Pinterest's Business Help Center for everything after you log in to Pinterest.
Old names you will still see
If an older tutorial tells you to set up Buyable Pins, that route is closed. A Shopify changelog post published on October 16, 2018 says Pinterest no longer supports Buyable Pins and points merchants to Product Pins, which, in that post's words, link directly to the product page on your online store. Product Pins are what the current app generates from your feed.
What You Need Before You Connect Shopify to Pinterest
Key takeaway
Pinterest lists three things to have before you start: get a Pinterest business account, create an advertiser account, and be an account owner. The rest of the table comes from Pinterest's pages on Shopify app availability, claiming a website, catalogs and troubleshooting, and each row is cheaper to settle now than after the first sync.
What to have in place before you connect
| What to have in place | Where you check it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| A Pinterest business account | Your Pinterest account type | Pinterest lists it first among the things you need before you connect a Shopify store |
| A country where the app is available | Pinterest's Shopify Pinterest app availability page | Pinterest says the Shopify Pinterest app is currently available in the countries listed there |
| An advertiser account | Pinterest Ads Manager | Depending on where your company is based, you may need one of Pinterest's digital advertising partners to create it before you can connect |
| The account owner role | Your role on the Pinterest business account | Pinterest asks you to be an account owner; profiles with Business Manager permissions can't connect |
| One Pinterest business account for the store | The account you log in with during setup | A store connects with only one Pinterest business account at a time |
| A domain no other Pinterest account has claimed | Pinterest Settings > Claimed accounts, on any older account | A website can only be claimed by one Pinterest account; to use it for a new account, unclaim it on the old one |
| No Pinterest tag added by hand | Your theme code, and any app you used for tracking | Pinterest recommends removing a manually added tag before you use the Pinterest for Shopify app |
| Shipping and return policies, contact details | Your store's policy pages and contact page | Shopify's blog says Pinterest catalogs need a compatible shipping policy, return policy and accessible contact information |
| Chrome on a desktop | The browser you connect from | Pinterest says you should ideally use Chrome on your desktop to connect |
Pinterest Business Help Center (linking Shopify, Shopify app availability, claiming a website, troubleshooting), Pinterest Merchant Guidelines and Shopify's blog, read October 13, 2026.
An advertiser account is a prerequisite, not a campaign: connecting does not start ads.
Shopify's own guide to selling on Pinterest puts the catalog condition in one sentence: Pinterest catalogs are available to business accounts with a claimed website and business practices that meet Pinterest's requirements. The app handles the claim; the policies and contact details are yours to publish.
Country limits on the app, Shopping and ads
Key takeaway
Pinterest's Shopping availability page says Shopping is available to Pinterest Business accounts in 71 countries, among them the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, as counted on October 13, 2026. Ads keep a separate availability list, and the Shopify Pinterest app has its own: Pinterest says the app is currently available in the countries on its Shopify app availability page, 70 on the same count.
The two lists differ: the app list includes Slovenia, which the Shopping list does not, and leaves out Hong Kong and Puerto Rico, which the Shopping list includes.
The ad account is the other country question. Pinterest says that, depending on where your company is based, you may need to work with one of its digital advertising partners to create an ad account before you can connect your Shopify store.
How to Connect Shopify to Pinterest
Key takeaway
The connection runs in one order: install the channel in Shopify, log in to Pinterest from inside it, then let the app do the claiming and tagging you would otherwise do by hand.
Install the Pinterest channel
Key takeaway
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Sales channels.
- Click Shopify App Store.
- Search for Pinterest and open the listing whose developer is PINTEREST inc.
- Click Install.
Those steps are Shopify's general procedure for adding a sales channel from a desktop. One consequence comes with it: when you add a sales channel, all your existing products are automatically available to the channel. If some products should stay off Pinterest, the catalog section shows where to take them out.
Connect your Pinterest business account
Key takeaway
The second half happens in Pinterest's screens rather than Shopify's. From the app you log in to your Pinterest business account as its owner, and Pinterest says that ideally you should use a Chrome browser on your desktop for this step.
Log in with the account you intend to keep. Pinterest says you can only connect your Shopify store with one Pinterest business account at a time, so moving to another account later means uninstalling the app and installing it again.
What the app sets up for you
Key takeaway
Pinterest's help page on linking the two accounts lists what the app does once you connect:
Two notes on tracking. Pinterest says that after the tag is installed, it can take up to 24 hours to be reflected in Ads Manager, so give it a day before you judge the report. The Pinterest Conversions API lets advertisers send conversions directly to Pinterest via a server-to-server connection, and anyone with a Pinterest business account can use it.
The app sets up both halves, the browser tag and the server connection, without code. How browser pixels and server-side events divide the work on Shopify in general is covered in our guide to the Meta pixel and Conversions API.
Pinterest's own walkthrough, published on its Pinterest Business channel in September 2026, shows the same route on screen: installing the app, logging in, the automatic tag and Conversions API setup, the catalog view and billing.
Your setup checklist
Key takeaway
The checklist below puts both halves in order, including the checks that only make sense a day later. Your ticks are saved in this browser, so you can come back after the first sync.
Connect Shopify to Pinterest — in this orderEight steps across three places: your Pinterest account, the Shopify admin, and Pinterest's catalog diagnostics.
Connect Shopify to Pinterest — in this order
Eight steps across three places: your Pinterest account, the Shopify admin, and Pinterest's catalog diagnostics.
Have a Pinterest business account and an advertiser account, and be the account owner.
Before you tick this off
- My country is on Pinterest's Shopify app availability list
- My Pinterest account is a business account
- An advertiser account exists, or I know whether my country needs an advertising partner to open one
- I am the account owner, not connecting from a profile with Business Manager permissions
Remove any Pinterest tag added by hand and make sure no other Pinterest account has claimed your domain.
Before you tick this off
- No Pinterest tag is pasted into theme code or added by another app
- Settings > Claimed accounts on any older Pinterest account does not list my domain
Make your return policy, shipping policy and contact information easy to find.
Before you tick this off
- The return policy says whether I accept returns, the process, the time expectations and how to contact me
- The shipping policy and contact details are reachable from the storefront
In Shopify, go to Settings > Sales channels > Shopify App Store and install Pinterest by PINTEREST inc.
Before you tick this off
- Pinterest appears under Sales channels, not under Apps
- I decided which products, if any, to remove from the channel's availability
Log in to Pinterest from the app, ideally in Chrome on a desktop, with the one business account you will keep.
Before you tick this off
- I logged in as the account owner
- I connected the business account I intend to keep
Check that your website shows under Claimed accounts and give the tag up to 24 hours to show in Ads Manager.
Before you tick this off
- My domain is listed under Settings > Claimed accounts in Pinterest
- The Pinterest tag shows in Ads Manager, allowing up to 24 hours
On a desktop, open catalog diagnostics and read both the Ingestion issues and Distribution issues tabs.
Before you tick this off
- No file-level errors such as 139 stop the catalog
- Row-level issues such as 4057, a warning, and 107, a failure, are fixed in Shopify
- I checked that products are approved, not only the catalog
Syncing does not start ads; create a campaign only when you choose to, knowing charges are billed in USD.
Before you tick this off
- I know Pinterest charges only when ads are purchased
- I checked whether an ads credit applies in my location
- I have a plan for products that sell out while a campaign is active
How the Shopify Catalog Syncs to Pinterest
Key takeaway
Once connected, the catalog runs on its own schedule. Four things decide what Pinterest receives: which products the channel can see, how often the feed refreshes, how your markets map to feed profiles, and whether each product carries the fields Pinterest requires.
Which products reach Pinterest
Key takeaway
Decide right after the install whether everything in your catalog belongs on Pinterest.
The control lives on the product, not in the app. Shopify says that if you don't want to sell a product on a particular channel, you need to remove the channel from the product's availability. The reverse matters as much: Pinterest's error 4057 asks you to make sure products are active and available to the Pinterest sales channel in Shopify before the next update.
How often Pinterest updates
Key takeaway
The sources describe the feed in different words. They are printed here as each source gives them:
How often each part of the catalog updates
| What syncs | How often | Who says it |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify product feed | Every 24 hours | Pinterest's troubleshooting page for the Shopify app |
| Shopify collections, added to Pinterest as product groups | Every 48 hours | Pinterest's troubleshooting page for the Shopify app |
| Product catalog | “Every day” in one line, “near real-time” in another | The Pinterest listing on the Shopify App Store |
Pinterest Business Help Center (Shopify app troubleshooting) and the Pinterest listing on the Shopify App Store, read October 13, 2026.
The listing says “every day” and “near real-time”; the troubleshooting page says Shopify feeds are updated every 24 hours. Use the help page's figure for planning: a change you make in Shopify may wait for the next 24-hour update. Open catalog diagnostics before you decide a sync has failed.
Stores selling in several markets
Key takeaway
Stores selling abroad meet a hard ceiling here. Pinterest's troubleshooting page says you can create Pinterest feed profiles to reflect your Shopify markets, but only 20 Pinterest feed profiles can be created, meaning some Shopify markets might be left out. Each feed profile also has to be active and carry a domain or web URL.
Shopify has a general rule for channels sold through channel markets: when you create a channel market, the connected sales channels inherit the parent country or region market's catalog and currency by default. Shopify states it for channel markets in general, so read it as how that mechanism works, not as a description of how the Pinterest app picks a feed's market.
If markets themselves are new to you, our guide to Shopify Markets explains what a market controls before you map one to Pinterest.
What every product needs
Key takeaway
Pinterest's catalog requirements list the fields every product must carry:
- id
- title
- description
- link
- image_link — the main product image
- price
- availability
- item_group_id — for products with variants
The stakes can be higher than one missing product: Pinterest's catalog page says that if these fields are missing, or formatted incorrectly, your entire retail catalog will fail ingestion. Pinterest's error-message page describes a narrower case: code 107, where some items are missing a description, is a row-level failure, and those items will not be published.
The image field has a size rule too. The same catalog page says the main product image has to be at least 1000x1500 pixels, accessible by Pinterest's user agent, with no template or placeholder images.
Approved Is Not the Same as Shown on Pinterest
Key takeaway
An approved catalog does not mean every product is live. Pinterest checks two things in sequence:
The two gates between your Shopify catalog and a Pin
| Gate | What Pinterest checks | Where you check it | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Ingestion | The catalog itself: required fields present and correctly formatted, item links on your verified domain | Catalog diagnostics (desktop) | Pinterest's catalog page says missing or badly formatted required fields fail the entire catalog; error 139 flags links that don't match your verified domain |
| 2. Distribution | Each product against Pinterest's product requirements and Merchant Guidelines, with price and stock current within seven days | Catalog diagnostics (desktop) | The catalog can stay approved while individual products are not; products not updated every seven days are not distributed |
Pinterest Business Help Center (catalogs, catalog diagnostics, data source error messages) and Pinterest Merchant Guidelines, read October 13, 2026.
Pinterest's diagnostics page puts it plainly: even though your retail catalog has been approved, certain products within it might not be approved if they do not meet its product requirements. The Merchant Guidelines set those requirements, and two of them reach into your store's data: Pinterest must have current (within seven days) and accurate price and stock information, and the return policy has to be easy to find and clear about whether returns are accepted, the process and time expectations, and contact information.
Two more boundaries change what a store can expect. Some products can't be Product Pins at all — Pinterest keeps a long list that includes tobacco and weapons and allows alcohol only with restrictions. And resale or consignment marketplaces are only eligible for Ads distribution.
Those rules are about to change. As of October 2026, Pinterest's guidelines page announces an updated edition effective November 12, 2026, and its preview adds “Scams, deceptive goods and practices” to the list of prohibited products and services. If your catalog sits near a restricted category, re-read the guidelines after that date.
Verified merchant is a separate status
Key takeaway
On top of the two gates sits a status you work toward. Pinterest says that being a verified merchant is different to being an approved merchant: approval comes from claiming and verifying your domain and getting the catalog through, while verification has a program of its own.
Among its requirements are a Pinterest account at least three months old, a website at least nine months old, at least 75% of your catalog ingested, and a conversion source that, in the last 30 days, sent at least one page visit, add to cart and checkout event every 7 days. The program is open in 35 countries according to Pinterest's availability page, as counted on October 13, 2026, and a merchant suspended from the program has 30 days after the alert to fix the outstanding issues.
Does Connecting Shopify to Pinterest Start Paid Ads?
Key takeaway
The worry is reasonable: Pinterest asks for an advertiser account before you connect. But that account is a prerequisite, not a campaign, and Pinterest separates syncing from spending in plain words.
Your products on Shopify will be synced to Pinterest as long as the Pinterest for Shopify app is active. We will not advertise your products until you choose to create ads.
What you pay and where ads run
Key takeaway
Money moves only when you buy ads. The listing's pricing line says Pinterest charges only when ads are purchased, with rates based on delivery and merchant budgets, and that all charges are billed in USD. Pinterest also says that, depending on your location, you'll be eligible for an ads credit when you launch your first ad campaign on Pinterest.
When you do advertise, you choose where to work. Pinterest says you can create, manage, and view reporting on your ads through Pinterest Ads Manager or through Shopify, with billing handled in Pinterest Ads Manager.
Pinterest ads that are not your app
Key takeaway
The word Pinterest turns up in two more places in Shopify, and neither is this integration:
Three ways Pinterest shows up in Shopify
| Feature | Whose ad account runs it | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Pinterest app (this guide) | Your own Pinterest advertiser account, and only when you create ads | Stores that connect a Pinterest business account; ad account rules depend on where the company is based |
| Shop Campaigns | Shop's own social media and ad accounts, never yours | Pinterest is one of the third-party platforms you opt into together; its ads are supported for customers in the United States |
| Shopify Audiences | Your Pinterest ad account, connected with admin permissions | Eligible Shopify Plus stores that use Shopify Payments and are based in the United States or Canada |
Pinterest listing on the Shopify App Store, Pinterest Business Help Center, and Shopify Help Center pages on Shop Campaigns and Shopify Audiences, read October 13, 2026.
Read Shopify's pages on Shop Campaigns and Shopify Audiences before you count either as part of your Pinterest setup. For Audiences, Shopify adds that connecting your Pinterest account requires admin permissions for your Pinterest ad account.
Shop Campaigns are a separate paid program with their own rules; our answer on whether Shopify promotes your store covers how they work and how they are charged.
When the Shopify Pinterest Integration Is Not Working
Key takeaway
Products you published weeks ago are still not on Pinterest. The app says your accounts are not connected. Or the catalog is approved, yet whole markets or individual products are missing. Each of those has a documented place to look, and several of the fixes are made in Shopify rather than on Pinterest.
Start with catalog diagnostics
Key takeaway
Catalog diagnostics is where Pinterest's explanations live. Select the Ingestion issues or Distribution issues tab to see the issues affecting your catalog, what to do about each and how many times it occurs. It is desktop-only for now: Pinterest says that at the moment you'll need to use your desktop to review your catalog's diagnostics.
If your data source has not been approved, Pinterest says you'll learn why on the catalogs diagnostics page.
Error codes that point back to Shopify
Key takeaway
Pinterest's data source error messages page explains each code. These are the ones whose fix sits in your Shopify admin or your product data:
Pinterest error codes and the Shopify-side fix
| Code | What Pinterest says | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| 4057 | Some items from your Shopify store have not been published on Pinterest. | Make sure the products are active and available to the Pinterest sales channel in Shopify before the next update |
| 4058 | Some items from your Shopify store were not published on Pinterest because your Shopify-hosted online store URL has not been provided. | Use Shopify's bulk editor to make the products available to the online store before the next update |
| 4059 | Some items from your Shopify store were not published on Pinterest because items are not being translated to the data source's default language. | Translate those products into the data source's default language |
| 4042 | Items in your data source were published, but some items were not published because they do not meet our Merchant Guidelines. | Review the Merchant Guidelines and correct each item's issues where possible, or remove the item from your feed |
| 139 | The item link values do not match the verified domain associated with this account. | Point product links at the domain claimed on this Pinterest account |
| 107 | Some items are missing a description in product metadata. These items will not be published. | Add a description to each affected product in Shopify |
Pinterest Business Help Center, troubleshoot data source error messages, read October 13, 2026. Pinterest classes 139 as a file-level failure, 107, 4042 and 4059 as row-level failures, and 4057 as a row-level warning.
Code 4057 trips a common Shopify misunderstanding: Active is a product status, not a channel publication. Our answer on products missing from a sales channel walks through the Shopify side, and the product's channel availability, covered in which products reach Pinterest, is where you switch Pinterest back on.
Connection, domain and tag problems
Key takeaway
The second group of failures sits in the app and in Pinterest's account settings. Pinterest's troubleshooting and claim pages document these fixes:
Connection problems and the documented fix
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The app says your accounts are not connected | Click Reconnect Pinterest Account and follow the instructions on screen; Pinterest says your password might have changed recently |
| Catalog or tag problems after a successful install | Use the Reset button in the app to fix catalog and tag issues and trigger a feed ingestion; Pinterest says you no longer have to remove the app and reinstall it |
| Your domain is claimed by another Pinterest account | Unclaim the website on the old account, then use it with the new one; a website can only be claimed by one Pinterest account |
| You are not sure which websites you have claimed | In Pinterest, go to Settings and select Claimed accounts |
| You claimed the website by hand with a DNS TXT record | Wait before you retry: changes from a TXT record can take up to 72 hours to take effect |
Pinterest Business Help Center (Shopify app troubleshooting, claim your website), read October 13, 2026.
The 72-hour wait applies only to a manual claim through a TXT record: Pinterest says you may need to wait up to 72 hours for the changes to take effect. The app claims the site for you, so the wait matters only if you claimed the domain by hand.
Switching accounts or removing the channel
Key takeaway
Because a store connects to one Pinterest business account at a time, switching is a disconnect-then-connect job:
- Disconnect the existing Pinterest business account by uninstalling the app, as Pinterest's troubleshooting page says to, using the removal steps below.
- If the new account should own the domain, unclaim the website on the old account.
- Install the app again and connect the new Pinterest business account.
Removing the channel follows Shopify's standard uninstall:
- Go to Settings > Sales channels.
- Click the ⋯ button beside Pinterest and select Uninstall.
- Select I understand the risks of uninstalling this sales channel, then confirm.
If you also mean to delete the catalog on Pinterest, archive its past and existing campaigns first: a Shopify catalog tied to an active campaign cannot be deleted. For anything else about the channel, Shopify's rule for third-party sales channels applies — contact the app developer directly, here Pinterest.
The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
The integration itself is light: one free app, one login, and Pinterest does the claiming, tagging and feed work. What decides whether it pays off is the part around it — the right accounts, a clean domain claim, products Pinterest will accept, and a habit of reading diagnostics.
