Can You Sell Online Courses on Shopify? Apps vs Platforms

Shopify sells courses through apps: four course apps and their caps, video limits, student access, and costs against Teachable, Thinkific and Kajabi.

Listen to a short brief of this article
Hands-free while you multitask

The short version

Yes, a Shopify store sells an online course once you add a course app: four App Store listings read on September 28, 2026 start their paid tiers at $19 to $29 a month, and the cheaper tiers cap different things, from 20 lessons per store on Courses Plus's $19.99 tier to 10 courses on Uplinkly's $19 tier. Without a course app, Shopify's free Digital Products app sends the buyer a link after purchase: a download link for a file of up to 5 GB, or a link to content hosted on a supported provider such as Teachable, Thinkific, Kajabi, YouTube or Vimeo, and Shopify's help page doesn't say that link enrolls the buyer on the platform.

Thinkific's help centre documents a Shopify app for one-time course sales, but its Shopify App Store listing said on September 28, 2026 that the app "is not currently available on the Shopify App Store", so confirm with Thinkific that a new store can still connect before you plan on it; we found no Teachable or Kajabi app in the Shopify App Store as of that date. At $1,000 a month in course sales, billed monthly and before card processing, Thinkific's entry tier totals $54 against $58 for the cheapest Shopify route, so Shopify wins when you also sell products or want one checkout for everything.

The Quick Verdict
Key Takeaway: The route follows what you already have. A store selling products adds a course app, paid tiers from $19 a month. Thinkific's one-time-only Shopify app is unlisted on the Shopify App Store, and we found no Teachable or Kajabi app there, as of September 28, 2026. Course-only sellers with no store planned lean to platforms.

Shopify can sell an online course, but it was built to sell products, so the course experience — the lessons, the player, drip and progress — comes from an app or from a separate course platform. That choice, not the checkout, is the real decision, and it turns on what else you sell and where your students already are.

This guide is for a coach, trainer or expert deciding where to sell a course, and for a merchant adding one to an existing store.

What Can Shopify Do for a Course Without a Course App?

Key takeaway

Start with the part Shopify already does well: the product, the price and the checkout. A course is listed and paid for like any other product. What a course needs beyond the sale is where the gaps are, and the table sets each need against what Shopify does on its own and what a course app adds.

What a course needs, and where it comes from

The Digital Products app sends a file or a link

Key takeaway

The Digital Products app is free, and Shopify's Help Center says it sells digital products in two ways: an uploaded file the buyer downloads, or a link to content hosted on a supported provider. For a file:

Upload a file, such as a video, song, ebook, or graphic. When a customer purchases the product, they receive a link to download the file.
Shopify Help Center — Digital downloads ·

So a buyer gets a file and keeps it. The same Help Center page, read on September 28, 2026, sets the maximum file size at 5 GB, says there is no bandwidth limit for downloads, and lets you limit downloads per variant, which is unlimited by default. The finer points, including share links and resending a download to one buyer, are covered in the Digital Products app's bandwidth and download limits.

A downloaded file is enough when the product really is a file: a workbook, a template pack, a recorded workshop the buyer keeps. It stops being enough the moment the course has lessons to unlock in order, an account to come back to, or a certificate at the end. If what you sell is mostly files, pricing, file protection and tax for digital goods are covered in our guide to selling digital products on Shopify.

Product-page video has its own, smaller limits

Video on the product page is a different system from the Digital Products app, with its own ceilings: per Shopify's product media requirements, an uploaded video can run up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, at up to 4K, as .mp4, .mov or .webm, while YouTube and Vimeo embeds skip those limits and other video URLs aren't supported. A product page is open to anyone who visits the store, so this is the place for a trailer, not for paid lessons. The full list of video and 3D types a product accepts is in which 3D models and videos a Shopify product accepts.

Which Course Apps Turn a Shopify Store Into a Course Site?

Key takeaway

The four below are the course apps we read on the Shopify App Store on September 28, 2026: a dated snapshot, not a ranking and not every course app listed. Each describes selling courses directly from your store rather than sending buyers to a separate course site.

Plans and features as listed on each Shopify App Store listing, read September 28, 2026, in USD per month; prices change on the listing first. Not a ranking.

Read the cap before the price. The four apps limit different things:

  • Courses Plus counts lessons across the whole store, so a 30-lesson course is already past its $19.99 tier.
  • Uplinkly counts courses, so a single course fits its free tier.
  • Inflowkit's free tier stops at 2 courses, 10 lessons in total and $300 in sales made through the app.
  • Tevello has one paid plan, $29 a month, with no tier to outgrow.

Match the unit an app counts to the way your catalogue will grow.

When Is a Course Platform the Better Tool?

Key takeaway

The honest case against Shopify for a course is structural. Shopify was built to sell products, so the parts that make a course a course — the lesson player, drip, progress, quizzes and certificates — come from an app, priced by that app and capped by its tiers.

If the course is the only thing you sell and no store is planned, you are paying for a storefront you don't use. The platform-wide list of trade-offs is in our breakdown of Shopify's disadvantages.

How course platforms connect to Shopify
PlatformOfficial route into ShopifyWhat it means for you
ThinkificA Shopify app documented in Thinkific's help centre; its Shopify App Store listing said it was not currently available on September 28, 2026Single Thinkific courses sell as Shopify products (details below)
TeachableNone found at apps.shopify.com/teachable or among the direct integrations in Teachable's help centre, September 28, 2026Shopify's free Digital Products app can sell a link to Teachable-hosted content; Shopify's page doesn't say the link enrolls the buyer on Teachable
KajabiThe one Kajabi–Shopify link we found in Kajabi's help centre runs the other way: Shopify buy buttons that sell physical products on Kajabi pagesMerchandise can sell on Kajabi; Shopify's free Digital Products app can sell a link to Kajabi-hosted content, and Shopify's page doesn't say the link enrolls the buyer on Kajabi

Thinkific's help centre, the Shopify App Store, Teachable's pricing and features pages and its help centre, and Kajabi's help centre, read September 28, 2026.

Thinkific documents a Shopify app, one-time only, now unlisted

Key takeaway

Thinkific's help centre documents a Shopify app, Thinkific - Online Courses, but its Shopify App Store listing said on September 28, 2026 that the app "is not currently available on the Shopify App Store", so confirm with Thinkific that a new store can still connect before you plan on it. The help centre spells out what happens once it is installed: every Thinkific course is imported into Shopify as a product, and the sale runs through Shopify's checkout.

When a customer purchases one of your courses in Shopify, a student account is immediately created for them in Thinkific and they are granted access to the course to begin their learning.
Thinkific — Shopify App: Getting Started Selling Thinkific Courses on Shopify ·

The limits are specific, and all three come from Thinkific's own supported-features page:

  • One-time payments only. "Only one-time payments are currently supported," so subscriptions and payment plans stay on Thinkific.
  • No bundles or memberships through Shopify. Both sell through Thinkific's built-in checkout instead.
  • One store. A Thinkific account connects to one Shopify store.

One more thing to expect: if you sell courses only through Shopify, Thinkific's help centre says not to expect those orders in your Thinkific dashboard. Shopify is where the sales record lives.

Teachable and Kajabi: no Shopify app we could find

Key takeaway

For Teachable, there is no listing at apps.shopify.com/teachable, neither Teachable's pricing page nor its features page mentions Shopify, and Teachable's help centre, which says it "only offers direct integrations with the apps listed in App Hub", lists no Shopify app there, as of September 28, 2026.

For Kajabi, the one link we found runs the other way: Kajabi's help centre explains how to sell physical products on Kajabi with Shopify buy buttons, and no Kajabi page we have found describes selling Kajabi courses through Shopify.

Shopify's own Digital Products app can sell a link to content hosted on Teachable or Kajabi, and Shopify's help page doesn't say that link enrolls the buyer on either platform.

What we looked for and did not find

Where this page says a feature or a connector was not found, it reads off these sources, checked on September 28, 2026:

  • Digital Products app (lesson player, drip, progress, quizzes, certificates): Shopify's Help Center pages on digital downloads, on selling services or digital products and on digital and service products, plus the app's App Store listing.
  • Teachable (a Shopify connector): the Shopify App Store address for Teachable, Teachable's pricing and features pages, and the App Hub list in Teachable's help centre.
  • Kajabi (a Shopify connector): the Shopify App Store address for Kajabi, Kajabi's pricing page, its buy-button help article and its online-courses product page.

The absence is the finding. A feature Shopify or a vendor ships later would change it.

What Does Each Route Cost at $1,000 a Month?

Key takeaway

To compare routes on one footing, the table fixes one month: $1,000 of course sales, every price billed monthly, and card processing left out and covered below the table. The Shopify rows add an app to the entry plan at $39 a month; the platform rows add any percentage fee the tier takes on sales.

Thinkific, entry tier$54No third-party gateway fee on Thinkific Payments$54Thinkific Payments processing: 2.9%
Teachable, Builder tier$890% with teachable:pay or Monthly Payment Gateway$89The 0% holds only with those two
Podia, Mover tier$495% = $50$99Podia's Shaker tier, $99, charges no Podia fee
Teachable, Starter tier$397.5% = $75$114The fee grows with every sale
Kajabi, entry tier$179None on Kajabi Payments; 2% with a third-party provider other than PayPal where Kajabi Payments is offered$1795 products

App prices from each Shopify App Store listing; Teachable, Thinkific, Kajabi and Podia prices and fees from their pricing pages; Shopify's entry plan from Shopify's pricing page. All read September 28, 2026, USD, billed monthly, card processing excluded. A worked example, not a quote.

Two patterns decide the order. The first is that a percentage fee grows with sales while a flat app tier does not: Teachable's Starter tier sits below every Shopify row on price alone and, once its 7.5% fee is added, ends up above every Shopify row in the table except the costliest one, Courses Plus Professional at $118.99; its Builder tier's 0% holds only with teachable:pay or Monthly Payment Gateway.

The second is that an app tier is cheap only inside its cap. A catalogue past 20 lessons moves Courses Plus from its Basic tier to Professional, where the Shopify route costs more than Teachable's Builder tier.

Thinkific's entry tier is the cheapest row at this level, and that is worth saying plainly: for a course-only seller, the Shopify route does not win on price by default. It wins when you also sell products, or when one checkout and one customer account for everything matter more than the difference.

Card processing sits on top of these totals. On Shopify's entry plan it is 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale with Shopify Payments, and using another payment provider adds Shopify's own 2% fee on that plan; Thinkific Payments charges 2.9%, and Kajabi Payments 2.9% + $0.30 on its entry tier for US entities.

Tax is the other cost the table leaves out, and it depends on where your buyers are. Shopify's Help Center page on digital product taxes notes that EU consumers pay VAT on digital goods at their own country's rate wherever the seller is, and that some jurisdictions don't charge sales tax on digital products; it points merchants to a local tax expert.

What it costs to try this
Testing the Shopify route costs the plan, not the course. The entry tier runs $39/month billed monthly, and Shopify's free trial lets you build the course product and put a test order through checkout before that starts. How the plans above the entry tier differ is covered in our Shopify pricing guide.

Can You Charge a Subscription for a Course on Shopify?

Key takeaway

How students pay is the second decision after where the course lives, because not every route can bill every model. The table sorts four common models against the routes that document them.

Courses Plus and Inflowkit Shopify App Store listings, Thinkific's Shopify App supported-features page and Shopify's Subscriptions considerations page, read September 28, 2026.

Shopify's own Shopify Subscriptions app is the obvious candidate for a monthly course, with two limits on its considerations page: subscription products sell only on the online store, Shopify POS, Shop and custom storefront sales channels, and bundles aren't compatible with it.

Its App Store listing names digital products among its subscription types; test a course subscription end to end before launching one. Which subscription app suits the rest of your store is covered in our comparison of Shopify subscription apps.

How Does a Buyer Become a Student?

Key takeaway

Once the course is a product, two questions remain: where the student signs in, and what grants access. On the sign-in side, all four apps list Customer accounts among the Shopify features they work with, which points students to the store's own customer account rather than a separate course login.

On the access side, Courses Plus documents buying the course product and several ways to grant access without a purchase, among them a customer tag, a Professional-tier feature. Its help centre describes the tag route this way:

Customers with this tag will be able to view the course without ordering it. Changes apply during 10 minutes after tag is assigned or removed.
Courses Plus — Course access by a tag — Courses Plus Help Center ·

Tags are what let a store that sells physical products attach a course to one of them: a kit that comes with video lessons, or a course unlocked by a larger purchase. On Courses Plus, tag-based course access starts on the Professional tier, $79.99 a month. Courses Plus's help centre builds that with Shopify Flow in three moves, set out in its article on adding a customer tag after an order:

1
Trigger on a paid order
In Shopify Flow, create a workflow with the Order paid trigger and, if needed, a condition for the specific product.
2
Add a customer tag
The workflow's action adds a customer tag to the buyer.
3
Match the tag on the course
Tag-based access is a Professional-tier feature on Courses Plus, $79.99 a month: open the course's Tags tab and put the same tag in the Tag based access field; the change applies within 10 minutes.

The other apps document less. Uplinkly lists tag-based access on its Business plan, and Inflowkit describes a learner dashboard. Tevello's help centre describes linking a course to a product, so a customer who buys that product gains access to the course content.

If you want to gate more than the course — member-only pages or member prices across the storefront — that is storefront gating rather than course access, and our guide to members-only Shopify stores covers the options.

Set Up the Shopify Route in This Order

Key takeaway

The six steps are the Shopify route. Step one decides the app tier and everything after it; step four is where a store that also sells products gains the most, because a tag, on the app tiers that offer it, can unlock the course from any product. If your quiz result was the Thinkific route, confirm with Thinkific that its Shopify app can still be installed, then use it in place of steps one to four and run the test order in step six.

  1. Count your lessons and courses and check them against the cap of the app tier you plan to buy.

  2. On the app's App Store listing, check that Customer accounts appears among the Shopify features it works with.

  3. Upload lesson videos into the course app and keep product-page video to a trailer within Shopify's 10-minute, 1 GB limit.

  4. Create the course in the app, confirm that buying it grants access, and add tag-based access, a Professional-tier feature on Courses Plus, where another product should unlock it.

  5. Set one-time, subscription or membership pricing in the app, remembering that Shopify's Subscriptions app isn't compatible with bundles.

  6. Buy the course as a customer, sign in to the account and open the first lesson before you announce the launch.

The Bottom Line

Key takeaway

Where you start decides most of this. A store that already sells products gains the most from a course app, because the buyer gets one checkout and one account for everything. A coach with nothing else to sell gains less, and should let the cost table and the app caps decide.

Choose the app by what it caps, then by price. Count your lessons and courses, decide between one-time and recurring billing, and confirm the listing names Customer accounts before paying for a tier — then run one test purchase from a customer account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only as files or links. Shopify's free Digital Products app sends the buyer a link to download each file, up to 5 GB per file, or a link to content hosted on a supported provider such as Teachable, Kajabi or Vimeo. Its documentation, read on September 28, 2026, describes no lesson player, drip schedule, progress tracking, quizzes or certificates; a course app adds those.
It depends on where the video goes. A file delivered through the Digital Products app can be up to 5 GB. A video uploaded to a product page is capped at 10 minutes and 1 GB, up to 4K, while YouTube and Vimeo embeds skip those limits. Lesson storage inside a course app is set by the app: Uplinkly's Professional tier lists unlimited storage.
Only if you set a limit. Shopify's Help Center says there is no bandwidth limit for downloads from the Digital Products app, and digital products fulfill automatically with unlimited downloads by default. You can set a download limit per variant, which is useful when a course workbook should not be passed around without end.
Pick by what the app caps. Of four listings read on September 28, 2026, Courses Plus counts lessons (20 per store on its $19.99 tier), Courses by Uplinkly counts courses (10 on its $19 tier), Inflowkit's free tier stops at 2 courses, 10 lessons in total and $300 in sales through the app, and Tevello has one $29 plan. A dated snapshot, not a ranking.
Through the store's customer account, on apps built for it: all four course apps we read list Customer accounts among the Shopify features they work with. From its Professional tier, Courses Plus also opens a course by customer tag, with changes applied within 10 minutes, so a Shopify Flow workflow can tag a buyer when another product is paid for.
Yes, through a course app that bills it. Courses Plus lists subscriptions from its $79.99 Professional tier and memberships and course bundles on its $199.99 Enterprise tier, and Inflowkit sells one-time purchases or subscriptions, with trials on its $49.99 Basic tier. Thinkific's help centre documents its Shopify app as one-time only, and Shopify's own Subscriptions app isn't compatible with bundles.
Not through an app we could find. On September 28, 2026, there was no listing at apps.shopify.com/teachable, and Teachable's help centre, which says it "only offers direct integrations with the apps listed in App Hub", lists no Shopify app there. Shopify's free Digital Products app can sell a link to Teachable-hosted content; Shopify's page doesn't say the link enrolls the buyer on Teachable.
Possibly, but check first. Thinkific's help centre documents a Shopify app that imports your courses as Shopify products and creates the student's Thinkific account at purchase, for one-time payments or free courses only, but its Shopify App Store listing said on September 28, 2026 that the app "is not currently available", so confirm with Thinkific that a new store can still connect.
We found no Kajabi app in the Shopify App Store as of September 28, 2026. Shopify's free Digital Products app can sell a link to Kajabi-hosted content; Shopify's page doesn't say the link enrolls the buyer on Kajabi. The one Kajabi–Shopify link we found in Kajabi's help centre runs the other way: Shopify buy buttons that sell physical products on Kajabi pages.
Not by default. At $1,000 a month in course sales, billed monthly and before card processing, Shopify's entry plan plus a $19 course app totals $58, Teachable's Starter tier $114 with its 7.5% fee, Teachable's Builder tier $89 with teachable:pay, and Thinkific's entry tier $54. Shopify wins when you also sell products or want one checkout for everything.
It depends on where your buyers are, and this page doesn't settle it. Shopify's Help Center notes that EU consumers pay VAT on digital goods at their own country's rate wherever the seller is, and that some jurisdictions don't charge sales tax on digital products. It advises checking with a local tax expert.
On a product page, yes: Shopify's product media accepts YouTube and Vimeo embeds without its 10-minute, 1 GB upload limits, but no other video URLs. A product page is open to anyone visiting the store, though, so it suits a trailer or a free preview. Paid lessons belong in the course app, which controls who can watch them.
