The short version
One Shopify store can sell your downloads, merch and vinyl, and feed up to 250 items to the Merch tab of your Spotify artist profile. For YouTube Shopping, Shopify's requirements include 1,000 subscribers, a channel approved for monetization and, for a music channel, Official Artist Channel status, and fans buy inside the YouTube app only from eligible US merchants.
For downloads alone, Bandcamp's 15% share of digital sales costs less than Basic's $39 monthly price until about $260 of sales a month, counting revenue share against plan price only. Below that, keep Bandcamp for files and open Shopify for merch, the Spotify tab and the merch table at shows, which every paid plan already covers.
The Quick Verdict
Find the row that describes you; every figure is worked through in the sections below.
Where to start, by what you sell
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You sell shirts, vinyl or CDs and help run your Spotify for Artists profile | Open a Shopify store and connect it to Spotify | Spotify's Merch tab pulls from one linked Shopify store per artist, and you can publish up to 250 items to it |
| You sell downloads only, and not many a month | Bandcamp can be enough for now | Bandcamp's Free tier takes a share of each sale instead of a monthly fee; the break-even against Basic is worked out in When Bandcamp is the cheaper home |
| Your YouTube channel is an Official Artist Channel in the Partner Program, with 1,000 subscribers | Check the rest of Shopify's list, then add YouTube Shopping | Eligible US merchants get checkout inside the YouTube app; outside the US, fans are sent to your store in their browser |
| You sell merch at shows | Shopify POS on the plan you already pay for | Casual in-person selling comes with every paid plan; POS Pro, $89 a month per location in USD, adds staff logins and permissions |
| Most of your listeners are in Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia or Turkey | Don't build the plan around Spotify merch | Spotify's merch guidelines say merch isn't shown to fans in those eight markets |
A musician's store has three jobs an ordinary store doesn't: deliver files, travel with the merch table from show to show, and show up where fans already listen. Shopify runs the store itself, while Spotify for Artists and YouTube connect to it as places to sell, each with its own entry conditions.
This guide is for an artist, band or small label deciding whether to open a Shopify store or keep selling through Bandcamp.
Can You Sell Music on Shopify?
Key takeaway
Shopify's page on selling music answers the question in its FAQ — "Yes, you can sell music on Shopify" — and a separate section on selling names the formats it has in mind:
Whether you're selling digital downloads, CDs, or vinyl albums, you can fulfill orders with just a few clicks. Shopify's unlimited bandwidth and fast servers help ensure your fans can always buy your latest music.
What you can sell, and how each reaches the fan
| What you sell | How Shopify handles it | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Albums, singles, stems | The free Shopify Digital Products app attaches the files to a product and delivers them after purchase | 5 GB per file; a .zip of several files is allowed, a folder is not |
| Vinyl and CDs | An ordinary physical product; a pre-order app for presales before the pressing arrives | Pre-orders need an app, and Shopify's Help Center ties them to Shopify Payments or PayPal Express |
| Shirts, hats, totes | Your own stock, or print-on-demand through an app | To appear on Spotify, an item must meet Spotify's merch guidelines, which list music recordings, apparel, bags and totes, and handmade items as permitted merchandise |
| Concert tickets | A ticketing app, or a physical product with pickup at the event location | Tax may follow the venue rather than the buyer's billing address |
| Memberships and livestreams | An app such as Conjured Memberships or Single | Each app sets its own features and pricing on its App Store listing |
Shopify Help Center pages on the Digital Products app, pre-orders and tax on digital products; Spotify's merch guidelines; App Store listings — read September 28, 2026.
Building the store itself — domain, payments, shipping, the pages every store needs — is the same job for a band as for anyone else, and our guide to building a Shopify ecommerce website walks through it. This page stays with the parts that are different for musicians.
If you also sell prints or original artwork, the art side — editions, commissions and shipping originals — is covered in Shopify for artists.
Selling Merch on Spotify Through Shopify
Key takeaway
Spotify's merch integration runs through an official Shopify App Store listing, Spotify for Artists, which describes the job in one line: "Create your virtual merch table on Spotify so fans can buy merch right where they're listening to your music." As of September 28, 2026 the listing and Spotify's support articles were live, and none of the official pages we read announced the integration closing (see What we looked for and did not find, below).
Who can connect, and how
Key takeaway
The app listing says artist team admins and editors can access the integration in Spotify for Artists, so whoever manages the profile — you, a manager or a label — makes the connection.
Source: Shopify's Sell on Spotify page, Spotify's article on connecting Shopify and Spotify's article on publishing merch from Shopify, read September 28, 2026.
A band with a side project, or a label with several artists, has to decide which store each profile connects to, because Spotify's support article on the connection is explicit:
You can only link one Shopify store per artist.
If you don't have a store yet, Spotify points you at a plan you can no longer open. Its connection article says "you can create a store with Shopify's Starter Plan", and its merch page for artists pitches Shopify "for as little as $5/month". Shopify's Help Center page on the Starter plan, read on the same day, September 28, 2026, says the opposite: "The Starter plan isn't available to new stores."
Plan your costs on Basic instead — the numbers are in What the store costs each month, below. What Starter still means for stores already on it is in our guide to the Shopify Starter plan.
What Spotify accepts on the Merch tab
Key takeaway
Connecting the store doesn't make every product eligible. Spotify's merch guidelines list these as permitted merchandise:
- music recordings — vinyl records, mixtapes, CDs;
- apparel — shirts, jackets, hats;
- bags and totes;
- handmade items, meaning items made or designed by the artist.
The same guidelines then list prohibited goods and services, from alcohol and tobacco to cryptocurrencies and online services.
Format matters too. Spotify's publishing article says a product must "use plain text and static images (no videos or rich formatting)" to be listed, so a product page built around a video or heavy formatting on Shopify won't carry over. Keep a plain-text description on anything you plan to publish to Spotify.
Where fans see it — and where they don't
Key takeaway
Publishing is not the same as featuring. The app listing describes publishing up to 250 items and "selecting which items to feature on your artist profile, release pages, and more", and adds that "Spotify will automatically remove out of stock items from featured positions" — so a sold-out tour shirt drops out of the featured spot without you editing anything.
Some of your fans may never see the tab. Spotify's merch guidelines say merch is visible to fans in all the markets where Spotify is available, except Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. If most of your listeners are in those eight markets, the Merch tab won't carry your sales there, and your own store has to.
How many published items you can pin to the top of your Merch tab depends on which Spotify page you read. Spotify's merch page for artists, read on September 28, 2026, says "Select up to two of your published items to pin". Its support article on pinning and tagging merch, read the same day, says "You can pin up to 5 items."
Pin in order of priority: your first two pins fit both pages. Whether a third, fourth or fifth shows, your own Merch tab will tell you.
What Spotify charges on those sales is the one money question we could not answer: none of the Spotify pages we read publishes a fee or commission on merch sold through the integration.
The absences on this page — a Spotify fee on merch sales, a notice that the integration is closing, a Spotify section in Shopify's Help Center and a Music filter on the Theme Store — were checked on September 28, 2026 against these surfaces: Spotify for Artists' support articles on connecting Shopify, publishing merch, merch guidelines and pinning; Spotify's merch page for artists and its newsroom; the Spotify for Artists listing on the Shopify App Store and Shopify's Sell on Spotify page; the sales-channel pages of Shopify's Help Center; and the Shopify Theme Store catalogue with its industry filter.
Where those pages are silent, the silence is the finding. It is not a promise that no such page exists.
Selling Merch on YouTube With Shopify
Key takeaway
YouTube is the other place your fans already are, and Shopify is one of the stores YouTube lets creators connect: Shopify appears in YouTube's list of supported shopping platforms.
Who qualifies: Shopify's list, the Partner Program and Official Artist Channel status
Key takeaway
Shopify's help page on YouTube Shopping lists nine requirements, and one applies only to musicians:
Shopify's nine requirements for YouTube Shopping
| Requirement on Shopify's list | What it means for a music channel |
|---|---|
| A minimum of 1,000 subscribers | Shopify's own minimum, even though YouTube's expanded Partner Program admits channels in listed countries from 500 subscribers, among other conditions |
| Channel approved for monetization | You are accepted into the YouTube Partner Program |
| Located in a country supported by the YouTube Partner Program | Where you are, not where your fans are |
| A music channel must be marked as an Official Artist Channel | The one condition that applies to musicians and not to other creators |
| The channel's email matches a Shopify staff account with full permissions | Whoever owns the channel needs full-permission access to your Shopify admin |
| The channel's email has owner or manager access to the YouTube channel | Applies to every channel, music or not |
| The channel isn't marked as Made for Kids and doesn't have a significant number of videos marked as Made for Kids | Applies to every channel, music or not |
| The channel doesn't have a significant number of videos that violate monetization policies | Applies to every channel, music or not |
| The channel has no strikes for violating YouTube's Hate Speech Community Guidelines | Applies to every channel, music or not |
Shopify Help Center, YouTube Shopping, read September 28, 2026.
Monetization means the YouTube Partner Program, and YouTube's Partner Program overview gives this threshold for getting in: 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
That is not the only way in. YouTube's help page on the expanded Partner Program, read on September 28, 2026, lets creators in listed countries, the United States among them, join with 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, and lists Shopping among the features open at that level, subject to each feature's own requirements.
Shopify's own list still asks for 1,000 subscribers, so plan on that figure for a Shopify store.
On top of that, a music channel has to carry YouTube's artist designation. Shopify's help page states it as a condition of its own:
If your YouTube channel is a music channel, then your channel must be marked as an Official Artist Channel.
YouTube's own page words it differently. Its Shopping requirements, read on September 28, 2026, ask that "your channel meets the subscriber threshold for YPP or is an Official Artist Channel", while Shopify's page, read the same day, lists 1,000 subscribers and, for a music channel, Official Artist Channel status as separate requirements. Meet both — 1,000 subscribers and Official Artist Channel status — and you satisfy the subscriber and artist conditions on both pages; the rest of Shopify's list still applies.
What fans get: in-app checkout for US merchants, your store elsewhere
Key takeaway
Where the purchase happens depends on where you are. YouTube's checkout page, read on September 28, 2026, says "You can sell your products directly on YouTube through Cafe24 in South Korea or Shopify in the United States." Shopify's help page describes the other side: for merchants outside the US, a fan who selects a product in your video is redirected to your online store in their device's browser.
Shopify's help page also says the Google & YouTube sales channel is managed by Google and points setup questions to Google Merchant Center Help.
YouTube's 2023 walkthrough shows what comes after the connection — the store tab and product tags in videos, Shorts and live streams; the eligibility rules above come from the current help pages, not from the video:
Selling Downloads: Albums, Singles and Stems
Key takeaway
What the free Digital Products app handles
Key takeaway
The app is Shopify Digital Products, free to install with a free plan available. It attaches files to a product variant, and its limits are the ones a release actually runs into:
Digital Products app limits that matter for a release
| Setting | What Shopify's Help Center says | What it means for a release |
|---|---|---|
| File size | The maximum file size is 5 GB | A lossless album fits; very large stem sessions go in several files |
| Bandwidth | No bandwidth limit for downloads | A release that takes off doesn't run into a download cap |
| Files per product | Several files per variant, or a .zip or other archive; no folders | Offer MP3 and WAV as variants, or bundle stems in one archive |
| Downloads per customer | Optional limit, set in each variant's fulfillment settings | Cap repeat downloads if you want; leave it open if you don't |
Shopify Help Center, Digital Products app, read September 28, 2026.
For a music-specific storefront inside Shopify, the App Store also carries Single, whose listing describes it as a way to "monetize fans directly with music, video, and memberships". Compare its pricing on the listing with the free Digital Products plan before you add it.
File protection, pricing strategy and the paid delivery apps are covered in our guide to selling digital products on Shopify.
VAT when fans in the EU buy a download
A download sold to a fan in the EU is taxed where the fan lives. Shopify's tax guidance on digital products says consumers in the European Union must pay VAT on digital goods "at the rate that applies in their own country, regardless where the seller is located", and that a merchant selling digital goods to EU customers needs to charge VAT based on the customer's location. Set that up before a release goes on sale to EU fans.
Merch, Vinyl and Pre-Orders
Key takeaway
Merch: print-on-demand or your own stock
Print-on-demand means no stock to buy up front; a bulk run means paying for stock that you can also carry to shows. Our merch store guide compares the trade-offs of print-on-demand against bulk ordering. If the item is meant for your Merch tab, check it against what Spotify accepts.
Vinyl and CD pre-orders
Key takeaway
A presale is the one physical-product job Shopify hands to an app, and the Help Center says so directly:
To use pre-orders, you need to install a pre-order app from the Shopify App Store and then manage pre-orders in the Shopify admin.
The same page adds that pre-orders "are currently only available to merchants using Shopify Payments or Paypal Express". Check your gateway before the presale is announced; our pre-orders guide covers which gateways pre-orders work with.
Two pre-order apps on the Shopify App Store on September 28, 2026 were Amai PreOrder Manager + Notify and Preorderly. That is a dated snapshot of two listings, not the whole category; compare deposit options and pricing on each listing.
Shopify's Help Center says that if you uninstall a pre-order app, the pre-order data you created in it — apart from customer payment information — is deleted after 48 hours. Test the app on one product before the presale opens, and keep it until the last record has shipped.
Selling Merch at Shows With Shopify POS
Key takeaway
For most bands the only question is whether the free in-person features are enough:
Casual in-person selling vs POS Pro
| Casual in-person selling | POS Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Included with every paid Shopify plan | $89 a month per location, or $67 a month on a yearly term (USD) |
| What it covers | Take in-person payments, capture basic customer information, accept limited returns and exchanges | Unlimited staff logins, staff permissions, customer lifetime-value reporting, faster exchanges and stock transfers, deeper inventory reports |
Features: Shopify POS pricing, read September 28, 2026. POS Pro prices in USD: $89 a month per location on Shopify's pricing page, and $67 a month on a 12-month term on Shopify's POS Pro yearly page.
A solo artist or a two-person merch table rarely needs Pro. Pro matters when several people sell and each needs their own login and permissions. The same choice for a short-term stand — hardware, card readers and staffing — is laid out in our pop-up guide under free in-person features vs POS Pro.
What It Costs, and When Bandcamp Costs Less
Key takeaway
What the store costs each month
Key takeaway
The store runs on a normal plan: $39 a month on Basic billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly, in USD as of September 2026. On top of it, the Digital Products app has a free plan, casual in-person selling is included, and the price of a paid music theme is in the themes section below. Pre-order, ticketing and membership apps carry their own prices on their App Store listings.
If you are a Spotify musician, check which offer line applies to you before you sign up: Shopify's Sell on Spotify page, read on September 28, 2026, advertises "an exclusive 90-day free trial only available to Spotify musicians" in its setup steps, while its headline, as shown to US visitors, reads "Start free then enjoy 3 months for $1/month".
When Bandcamp is the cheaper home for your music
Key takeaway
Bandcamp's Free tier has no monthly fee — Pro is an optional paid plan — and Bandcamp keeps a share of each sale instead. For digital items Bandcamp's fee is 15%, dropping to 10% once you reach $5,000 in sales and staying there while you have made at least $5,000 in the past 12 months, according to its help center, read on September 28, 2026.
Physical items carry a 10% share on the same Bandcamp page, and shipping and tax are not included when that fee is calculated. For any item, Bandcamp takes its share from the first $100 of the price only, or of the total when a fan buys more than one of that item, which matters for an expensive vinyl bundle.
Divide Basic's monthly price by Bandcamp's share: $39 ÷ 15% = $260 of digital sales a month. Below that, Bandcamp's share costs less than the plan; above it, the plan costs less. Once Bandcamp's rate drops to 10%, the same sum gives $39 ÷ 10% = $390 a month.
This compares Bandcamp's revenue share with Shopify's plan price only. Card processing is extra on both sides: Shopify charges it on top of the plan, and Bandcamp says its payment processor fees are added on top of its share.
The two are not exclusive. Spotify's Merch tab connects to a Shopify store, so an artist below the break-even on downloads can keep Bandcamp for files and still open Shopify for merch, the Spotify tab and the merch table. The store earns its plan price from what Bandcamp can't connect to, not from downloads alone.
Tickets, Livestreams and Fan Clubs
Key takeaway
Selling concert tickets
Key takeaway
For seated shows or timed entry, a ticketing app does the work. Ticket Spot describes itself on its listing, read on September 28, 2026, as offering "Reserved seating, timed entry, and no per-ticket fees". Whichever route you take, a ticket's tax may follow the venue rather than the buyer's billing address, and Shopify's tax guidance says how to set it up:
If you sell event tickets or provide services at a specific location, then you might need to charge taxes based on the event or service location instead of the customer's billing address. To calculate taxes correctly, set up the ticket or service as a physical product with in-store pickup at the event location.
In practice that means creating a location in Shopify for the venue before tickets go on sale, so each show has a pickup point the tax calculation can use. Each venue location counts toward your plan's limit on active locations, which Shopify's Help Center puts at 10 on Basic; locations you deactivate don't count toward it.
The same tax guidance adds that customers can't check out with an in-store pickup product and a product that requires shipping in the same order, so say in the ticket's description that it must be purchased separately.
Memberships and paid livestreams
A paid fan club is a membership app's job: Conjured Memberships builds membership programs, and Single, covered above, adds memberships and video to its music features, including what its listing calls "PPV content & livestreams" for concerts. How to gate products, pages and prices by membership, and what each approach costs, is in our guide to running a members-only Shopify store.
Which Shopify Themes Suit a Music Store?
Key takeaway
A search for "music" on the Theme Store on September 28, 2026 returned two themes: Maranello's Records preset, labelled "Made for music catalogs" and listed at $320 USD, and Outsiders' Misfits preset, listed at $380 USD.
Don't expect a category to browse: we found no Music option among the Theme Store's industry filters (see What we looked for and did not find, above), so the text search is the way in. Compare either with a free theme before paying.
What separates free themes from paid ones, and how to choose by niche, is in our guide to what a Shopify theme is.
Selling Cover Songs: License Before You Press
Key takeaway
A cover means recording someone else's song, so the license comes before the pressing. HFA's Songfile says it helps you license cover songs "for physical and digital formats such as CDs, downloads, ringtones and streams". Its help page on using Songfile says its streaming licenses are "valid only for streaming on personal websites", and that to release on third-party streaming platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music you must ask the service or your distributor.
Songfile licenses are subject to a processing fee: Songfile charges a $16 processing fee per song license, and each additional song beyond five in a single transaction is $14, not per copy, as read on September 28, 2026. Above 2,500 copies, Songfile sends you to a separate HFA Licensing Account.
If a song isn't available through Songfile, HFA says you'll need permission directly from the publisher. This section points at one licensing route for cover recordings; whether a particular release needs more — a sample, a remix, a sync — is a question for your label, distributor or a music lawyer.
Your Music Store Launch Checklist
Key takeaway
Steps one to five apply to every artist; steps six to eight are channels, each with its own gate, so skip any you don't qualify for yet. Do step four before you announce a presale, because the pre-order app has to be in place first.
Music Store Launch ChecklistTick each step off as you move from the first product to the merch table.Show all 8 steps Hide the steps
Music Store Launch Checklist
Tick each step off as you move from the first product to the merch table.
Pick the lead product — downloads, merch, vinyl or tickets — and license any cover songs before you sell copies.
Before you tick this off
- Chose the product the store launches with
- Listed every cover song on the release
- Licensed each cover, for example through Songfile if the song is available there
Start the trial, then plan your costs on Basic, since Shopify's Help Center says the Starter plan isn't available to new stores.
Before you tick this off
- Store opened on a trial
- If you are a Spotify musician, checked which offer on Shopify's Spotify page applies to you
- Costs planned on Basic, billed monthly or yearly
Compare the two music themes the Theme Store search returns with a free theme, judged on what you sell most.
Before you tick this off
- Looked at Maranello's Records preset and Outsiders' Misfits preset
- Checked how the theme shows album pages and merch grids
Attach release files with the Digital Products app, list physical items, and install a pre-order app before any presale opens.
Before you tick this off
- Each release file is 5 GB or less, or split into several files
- Physical items have stock or a print-on-demand app behind them
- Pre-order app installed and tested on Shopify Payments or PayPal Express
Charge EU fans VAT by their location on digital goods, and for tickets, create a Shopify location for each venue.
Before you tick this off
- EU VAT on digital products set by customer location
- A Shopify location for each venue, within your plan's active-location limit
An admin or editor on the artist team links the store in Spotify for Artists and publishes up to 250 items.
Before you tick this off
- The person connecting is an admin or editor on the artist team
- Published items use plain text and static images and meet Spotify's merch guidelines
- Checked which items and pins actually show on your Merch tab
Add the Google & YouTube channel once the channel meets Shopify's requirements, among them Partner Program membership, 1,000 subscribers and Official Artist Channel status.
Before you tick this off
- Channel is in the YouTube Partner Program and has the 1,000 subscribers Shopify's list asks for
- Channel is marked as an Official Artist Channel
- Channel email matches a Shopify staff account with full permissions
- Checked the rest of Shopify's nine requirements, from Made for Kids status to Hate Speech strikes
Install Shopify POS for shows, and add POS Pro only if several people need their own logins.
Before you tick this off
- Shopify POS installed on the device you take to shows
- Tour merch and inventory set up to sell in person
- Decided whether the crew needs POS Pro
The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
For a musician, Shopify is less a replacement for Bandcamp than the store that Spotify's Merch tab, YouTube and the merch table all draw from.
