How does partial capture per fulfillment work on Shopify?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Shopify Plus only, with multi-capture payment methods: captured as items ship, within the authorization period (standard 7 days on Shopify Payments)
Fulfillment apps
Not compatible with apps that need a paid order status first
Card brands on Shopify Payments
Multiple captures work only with Amex, Visa, Discover and Mastercard
Provider can't split captures
The entire order is captured at the first fulfillment
Existing orders
Not covered — it applies only to orders placed after you turn it on

What gets charged at each shipment?

Shopify calls the setting Capture payment per fulfillment; “partial capture” is our shorthand. Payment is authorized at checkout, then captured in multiple partial payments:

Part of the orderCaptured
Line items and applicable taxesWhen those items are fulfilled
Shipping, fees and dutiesWhen the entire order is fulfilled
Order-level discountsSpread evenly across fulfillments
Shipping discountsIn the final fulfillment
Shop CashFull amount on the first capture

If your payment method can't capture multiple partial payments, the entire order is captured at the first fulfillment. If your provider supports multiple captures, transaction fees apply to each capture; on Shopify Payments, multiple captures work only with Amex, Visa, Discover and Mastercard cards.

What if a shipment misses the authorization period?

Payment can only be captured within the authorization period — 7 days as standard on Shopify Payments. After it ends, Shopify warns that you might be unable to collect any money for the order.

Per-fulfillment automation stops when:

  • a fulfillment is canceled;
  • payment is captured manually;
  • an item is returned;
  • the order is partially or fully refunded.
Before an authorization expires
Set the optional email that warns you 1 day ahead, and capture manually first if a shipment will be late.

Who can turn it on, and where?

It's available only on the Shopify Plus plan, and your payment provider must support authorization periods and multiple captures.

It doesn't work with fulfillment apps that require a paid order status first. With Due on fulfillment payment terms, payment is due when the entire order is fulfilled instead of per fulfillment; B2B checkout orders without those terms must be manually captured.

Under Payment capture method, select Automatically when fulfilling, then Capture payment per fulfillment. Only orders placed afterwards are covered.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Settings
  2. Payments
On Shopify Plus, open Payment capture method to choose Automatically when fulfilling.

Payment requests per fulfillment, a separate feature, exclude non-B2B orders created with fulfillment-based capture.

Automatically when the entire order is fulfilled won't capture a partially fulfilled order; compare the capture methods.
