How do you change the Buy it now button color on Shopify?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Edit Colors and Typography in Theme settings to restyle the unbranded Buy it now button; branded Shop Pay or PayPal ones can't be changed.
Which fields
They vary by theme; the Help pages we read name none for the button in Horizon.
Branded buttons
You can't customize their color or fonts; only the unbranded buttons can be.
Code
Sets height (25px to 55px), corners and shadow; no property for the button's color or font in pages we read.

Where do you change the Buy it now color and font?

In the theme editor's Theme settings, once the buttons are added to your online store:

  1. Go to Online Store and click Edit theme on your theme.
  2. Click the gear icon for Theme settings.
  3. Click Colors and edit the settings for the button's background and text color; Shopify says the specific settings vary from theme to theme. When we checked Horizon on October 21, 2026, Theme settings showed Color palette instead of Colors.
  4. Click Typography and edit the setting for the button text.
  5. Click Save.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Online Store
  2. Edit theme
  3. Theme settings
Steps 2–4: in Horizon on October 21, 2026, the gear icon opened a panel listing Color palette and Typography.

Horizon's Theme settings also list Buttons, but the Help Center pages we read on October 21, 2026 don't say whether Buttons or one of the color palettes colors Buy it now.

Why don't Shop Pay, PayPal or Apple Pay buttons change?

Shopify lets you customize the color and fonts of unbranded accelerated checkout buttons, but not the branded versions. In the theme you can only show or hide the buttons; you can't choose whether branded or unbranded ones display.

With no third-party accelerated checkout method activated, only Buy it now displays; otherwise several factors decide which button shows.

Can custom code change the button color instead?

Neither of the two shopify.dev pages we read on October 21, 2026 lists a property for the button's color or font, so set those in Theme settings.

Shopify's developer docs say the buttons hide their HTML in a custom element with a closed shadow DOM, so styling that targets their HTML structure won't work.

Instead, Shopify says to style them with CSS custom properties, which set:

  • button height, from 25px to 55px
  • corner radius
  • box shadow
  • the loading placeholder
  • in the cart: the buttons' size and alignment in the horizontal row layout, and the row gap when they stack vertically
