At a glance
Short answer
Yes — POS Terminal has a built-in customer display, or an Android tablet can run the Customer View app; display settings apply to every location.
POS Terminal needs
Shopify POS 8.16 or later, active Shopify Payments, and Wi-Fi to your POS device
Customer View
Android only on the help page we read
No display
Staff are prompted to turn the POS device toward the customer to choose a receipt
Idle screen
Your logo or up to 250 characters of text, over an image or a solid color

Which hardware gives you a customer-facing display?

Two documented routes
POS Terminal
  • Built-in display: the Reader sits in its Dock
  • $349 in the US
  • Sold in 18 countries with a Shopify hardware store
  • Connects to your POS device over Wi-Fi only
  • Shopify POS 8.16+ and active Shopify Payments; store currency must match your country's
Customer View app
  • Android 8.0+ tablet, 7-inch screen or larger, with Google Play
  • Pairs with POS over your local network
  • Doesn't support signatures
  • POS and Customer View v11.17+ to identify more in-store customers, with Shopify Payments and Network Intelligence enabled (changelog, October 28, 2026)

Hoping to use a spare iPad as the customer screen? The Customer View help page we read on October 29, 2026 describes the app for Android devices only.

Without either route, staff are prompted to turn the POS device toward the customer to choose a receipt. Comparing every reader? See our Shopify POS app guide.

What does the customer see on the display?

The screens follow the sale:

  • the cart details;
  • tips, if you've turned them on;
  • on POS Terminal, a prompt to tap, swipe or insert the card;
  • receipt options: print, email, SMS, or the Shop app when Shop Pay is activated online and the customer is an active Shop app user with a saved card;
  • a thank-you screen, then the idle screen between sales.

Where do you customize the customer display?

In Point of Sale › Settings, click Customer display under Customization to open the POS editor.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Point of Sale
  2. Settings
  3. Customization
  4. Customer display
Pick Idle screen to set what shows between sales; use the device preview switch to check it.

On the idle screen, show your logo or up to 250 characters of text, over a PNG or JPEG background (1080 × 1920 pixels recommended) or a solid color.

Which logo file to upload
The “Customize your Shopify POS customer display screens” page asks for SVG, PNG or WEBP of at least 512 pixels; the POS Terminal customization page says PNG or JPEG (both read October 29, 2026). A PNG of 512+ pixels meets both.

Under Checkout, cart product images show by default and can be turned off; a color theme and your own message in place of the default “Thank you!” are optional.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Point of Sale
  2. Settings
  3. Customization
  4. Customer display
Open Cart summary under Checkout to turn Show product images off.

These changes apply to all POS devices at all locations.
