Yes: gross sales count pending, canceled and unpaid orders; test and deleted ones are left out, and cancellations return as reversals in net sales.

A sales reversal, negative on the day it's processed: net sales drop, gross sales don't
Paid-only figure
Payments finance reports count captured payments; Order payment status splits sales where a report offers that dimension
Canceled before capture
A positive and a matching negative in sales reports, nothing in payments finance reports, payment status Voided

What counts in Shopify gross sales?

Shopify defines gross sales as product price times quantity, before taxes, shipping, discounts and sales reversals. Its sales reports cover open, archived, pending and canceled orders plus converted draft orders, and show the value of goods, not money received.

Pending, canceled, and unpaid orders are included.

Deleted orders and test orders stay out. Deleting an order removes its data from the reports; canceling it does not.

What happens when an order is canceled or never paid?

A cancellation is a sales reversal: the sale counts as a positive value on the day it was made, the reversal as a negative value on the day it was processed. Gross sales keep the order; net sales, gross minus discounts and reversals, take it back out. Cancel in a later period, and the two land in different periods.

An unpaid order stays in gross sales whether or not the money ever arrives; canceling it adds a sales reversal like any other cancellation. An authorization canceled before capture shows a positive and a matching negative amount in sales reports, nothing in payments finance reports, and a Voided payment status.

How do you get a paid-only sales figure?

Sales and payments finance reports can differ, for example when customers have placed orders but payment hasn't been captured. Two routes help: one follows the money, the other splits the value of goods by payment state:

Money actually received
  • Payments finance reports: captured payments only
  • Net payments over time, by order, by method or by gateway
  • Filter Reports by Categories > Finances
Sales split by payment state
  • Order payment status, such as Pending or Paid (to get refunded figures, Shopify's help suggests adding a Payment status column to the Sales over time report)
  • ShopifyQL order_payment_status, such as Authorized or Partially refunded
