Can you delete an order in Shopify?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Yes, but only test, manual-payment, marked-as-paid draft and API-imported orders once archived or canceled, plus draft orders themselves.
First step
Archive or cancel a placed order, and void any unused shipping label.
Paid with a gift card
The order can be archived, but not deleted.
After deleting
Gone from your admin and sales reports; Shopify says deleted orders can't be recovered.
Bulk delete
No Orders bulk action for it on the pages we checked; archiving runs in bulk.

Which Shopify orders can you delete?

Only five order types can be deleted:

  • test orders;
  • orders paid with a manual payment method;
  • orders that started as a draft and were then marked as paid;
  • orders imported through the Shopify API;
  • draft orders.

A live order paid online at checkout isn't on that list. An order paid through the Test payment gateway or Shopify Payments in test mode can be deleted only if it's a test order, and an order paid with a gift card can be archived, but not deleted.

Should you delete or archive?

Deleting removes the order from your admin and its data from your sales reports. Shopify's developer reference adds:

This action is irreversible. You can't recover deleted orders.

Delete
  • Leaves your admin
  • Leaves sales reports
  • Can't be recovered
  • No Orders-list bulk action we found
Archive
  • Moves to the Closed view
  • Stays in sales reports
  • Can be unarchived
  • Works in bulk

Delete only when you want the order out of your admin and sales reports for good. Keeping a copy is a separate question: see our store backup guide.

How do you delete an order?

An order must be archived or canceled before you can delete it. Draft orders are the exception: you can delete one whether it's open or completed, and deleting a completed draft doesn't delete the order created from it. By default, orders that are paid for and fulfilled, or fully refunded, archive automatically and sit in the Closed order view.

Otherwise, archive or cancel a placed order first (both sit under More actions, shown below; for canceling, see our returns and cancellations guide), and void any unused shipping label you bought for it.

An open order offers Archive and Cancel order here — one of them has to come before Delete order.

Then open Orders, click the archived or canceled order, click Delete order, and confirm with Delete order.

No page we read in October 2026 (canceling orders, bulk actions, orderDelete) describes a bulk delete in the Orders list, where archiving does run in bulk; on desktop, the Drafts list has a Delete draft orders bulk action. The third-party app Matrixify documents a DELETE command for deleting orders in bulk.
