Does Shopify accept WebP for product images?

Yes. Shopify names PNG as the best type for most product images, JPEG next, and then lists the rest: "Other accepted file types are PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP". That is nine types in total, and animated GIF and WebP files are supported as well.

Two other limits ride on the same upload: a product or collection image must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels.

Can you upload an AVIF file to Shopify?

Not according to Shopify's own file-type lists. None of the accepted-file-type lists we read on September 8, 2026 names AVIF — not on the product media types page, theme images, Content > Files, add-media, or shopify.dev's image_url reference.

Yet a shopper can still receive AVIF where the browser supports it: the conversion happens on delivery, not on upload.

Shopify automatically detects which image formats are supported by the client (e.g. WebP, AVIF, etc.) and selects a file format for optimal quality and file size.

So converting your library to AVIF before upload buys nothing: those lists don't name it, and Shopify already picks that format per browser. The file's size and dimensions are still yours.

Where does WebP get refused?

As a collection image. Shopify says so outright: "Collection images don't support WebP, even though products and Files do". So the same file can sit on a product and be refused as the collection image above it.

Two other surfaces accept WebP but publish their own shorter lists.

  • Theme editor — JPEG, Progressive JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC and WebP; PSD, TIFF and BMP are converted to JPEG or PNG on upload.
  • Content > Files — five types: JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC and GIF.
