How do you merge two customer profiles?

Customers can't merge their profiles by changing their email, so you merge them in the admin. The Help Center and developer pages we read on October 12, 2026 don't tie merging to a plan, POS or customer account type.

In Shopify admin
  1. Customers
  2. Customer profile
  3. More actions
  4. Merge customer

UI checked October 12, 2026 in our development store
  1. Open one duplicate and click More actions > Merge customer.
  2. Find the other profile by name, email or phone.
  3. In the Merged customer section, review which information is merged and which is discarded.
  4. Click Merge, then Confirm.
Check before you confirm
Conflicting details? Cancel and correct each profile first. A merge can't be reversed.

Or select both profiles in the customer list and choose Merge customers. For more than two, repeat the merge for each extra profile.

What carries over into the merged profile?

The merged profile combines information including orders, addresses, notes, tags and timeline events. Shopify's merge rules cap combined notes at 5,000 characters, including spaces, and combined tags at 250. If only one profile is subscribed to email and SMS marketing, the merged profile is subscribed.

If both profiles have an email address, the profile linked to the email kept on the merged profile remains. Moving single orders between customers isn't possible: an order's email address is its unique identifier.

Shopify doesn't notify the customer. Shopify's Managing customers page, read October 12, 2026, doesn't list what a merge discards; the Merged customer section shows it before you confirm.

When can't Shopify merge two profiles?

The merge is blocked when:

  • either profile has, or has ever had, a subscription contract;
  • a B2B customer is actively linked to a company or still linked to past B2B orders;
  • a profile has a saved (vaulted) credit card or a store credit account;
  • a profile uses Multipass login or is deleted;
  • a profile is redacted or a redaction request is in progress;
  • a merge or customer data request is already in progress.

The Help Center page we read on October 12, 2026 doesn't say how to clear these cases; if one applies, the profiles stay separate.

Is a Shopify customer segment a live list or a snapshot?

Live — Shopify adds and removes members automatically; the count on the segments index lags until you open the segment or an app uses it.
