How do you archive an order on Shopify?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Open the order and archive it from More actions; it moves to the Archived view, and by default many finished orders archive on their own.
Where it goes
The Archived view, which some Shopify Help pages call Closed; the order's status reads Archived.
In the All view
Archived orders show unless its Hide archived setting is on; that setting applies only to you.
To undo it
Unarchive; Shopify documents it as a bulk action.
Sales reports
Still include archived orders.
Archives automatically
Orders paid for and fulfilled, and orders fully refunded, while the setting is on.
Also archives
Closing a fulfillment batch, or a Shopify Flow workflow with the Archive order action.

How do you archive one order in the Shopify admin?

  1. Go to Orders.
  2. Click the order's number.
  3. Click More actions, then Archive orders.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Orders
  2. Order details
  3. More actions
Step 3: the item is in this menu.

Shopify's canceling orders page calls that item Archive orders; Shopify's test order page writes Archive.

In our development store
On November 5, 2026, this item read Archive.
  • In the Shopify app: the order's menu has Archive order.
  • For several orders: use the bulk action.
  • For staff: the Manage order information permission covers archiving and unarchiving.

What does archiving change, and can you undo it?

The order leaves your open orders list, moves to the Archived order view with the status Archived, and stays in Shopify's sales reports. Shopify's canceling orders page calls that view Closed.

Looking for a missing order? The view menu in our test store's Orders list has Archived.

Archiving is not canceling, which stops an order in process, or deleting, which requires an archived or canceled order first.

To reverse archiving, Shopify documents a bulk action that unarchives multiple orders.

In our development store
On November 5, 2026, the view menu in Orders had no view named Closed. On an archived, fulfilled test order, More actions listed Unarchive and View order status page, and the header showed Refund; we ran none of them.

Why does Shopify archive orders automatically?

By default, many orders archive themselves once no processing remains: those paid for and fulfilled, and those fully refunded. Closing a fulfillment batch also archives its orders.

To stop orders archiving themselves, clear Automatically archive the order in Order processing and click Save; you can then archive completed orders manually.

  2. General
  3. Order processing
Clear this checkbox to turn automatic archiving off.

The order processing and canceling orders pages we read on November 5, 2026 don't say whether the checkbox change reaches orders you already have.

A changelog entry of August 13, 2025, on discounts for fulfilled items, says orders automatically unarchive for edits and re-archive after a refund.

None of the order Help pages or changelog feeds we read on November 4, 2026 says a manual Unarchive restarts automatic archiving.
