How do you remove a collaborator in Shopify?

  1. Our advice first, not a Shopify step: ask the partner about apps they installed or created, and tell them they're being removed (see below).
  2. In Settings > Users, filter by User type > Collaborators.
  3. Open the collaborator.
  4. Outside an organization, click Remove name under Remove collaborator account; in an organization, click Actions > Remove.
  5. Confirm Remove in the dialog.

  2. Users
  3. Collaborator
Step 4 in an organization: open the collaborator, then Actions, then Remove.

Only eligible users can manage collaborator accounts; on a single store not on Shopify Plus, the store owner and the Administrator role manage users. The collaborator's name and actions stay in the store activity log and order timeline.

None of the Shopify pages we read on October 30, 2026 (collaborator accounts, user management roles, About apps and the partner-side Collaborations docs) says whether the partner is told, or what happens to apps they installed or created.

Should you remove a collaborator or let access expire?

Shopify advises removing a collaborator once you no longer need their help; otherwise access expires if they haven't logged in within 90 days.

Remove now
  • Permanent, no undo
  • The partner returns only by resending their request
Let access expire
  • Lapses after 90 days without a login; a partner who logs in keeps access
  • Restore it with Actions > Reactivate user, or approve the partner's new request
Done with the partner? Remove their account.

Collaborators don't count towards your user limit, so a seat is no reason to remove one.

How does a removed or rejected collaborator get back in?

A removed collaborator resends their request, and you accept it like the first one.

Rejecting an open request removes its auto-generated role, and a repeat request fails as declined, which the partner can't clear. Rejected by mistake? They contact Partner Support, which adjusts their account so they can send another request.

A new request code makes old codes stop working, but a partner whose organization has an app installed on your store needs no code. So a new code won't stop a removed partner with an app on your store from asking again; only your approval lets them back in.
