How do you mark employees as one customer segment?

A discount code can apply to up to 100 specific customers. For a larger team, or one that changes, use a tag-based segment:

  1. Add a tag such as employee to each employee's customer profile — the one with the email or phone they check out with.
  2. Create a customer segment that filters on customer_tags for that tag.

  2. Customer details
Step 1: add the employee tag in the Tags card of each staff member's customer profile.

  2. Segments
Step 2: the segment filters customers on the employee tag.

Shopify then adds and removes segment members automatically as you tag new hires.

A segment discount applies only to existing customers, so add a customer profile for each new hire in your admin and tag it.

How do you limit a discount to employees and stop it leaking?

Shopify suggests emailing a discount code or showing it on your store, and anyone who sees a code can pass it on. An automatic discount is applied in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met, so there is no code to forward.

  2. Create discount
  3. Amount off order

Set Method to Automatic discount, then under Eligibility choose Customer segments and pick the employee segment; checkout identifies members by a valid email address or phone number.

Step 3: in Eligibility, choose Customer segments and pick the employee segment.
  • Usage cap. Shopify's help puts Maximum discount uses on discount codes; its automatic-discount steps don't include it.
  • End date. The discount expires at the end date and time you set.
  • Combinations. Check only the discount classes it may combine with, so staff pricing doesn't stack onto your other promotions.

Step 4: set an end date and choose combinations on the same form.

For custom eligibility requirements a segment can't express, Shopify's help lists more advanced discount options.

How do employees get the discount at a Shopify POS register?

At the register, staff create a custom discount on the whole cart or one line item. Both need the Apply custom discounts permission.

  1. Settings
  2. Users
  3. Roles
Step 5: with POS Pro, check Apply custom discounts in your cashiers' POS role, and Apply discount codes for codes.

Entering a code needs Apply discount codes. Automatic discounts reach POS only at POS Pro locations, and Shopify's help documents that for All customers or Markets eligibility, so test a segment discount at your register before relying on it.

Manual discounts are attributed to the staff member who applied them, and only certain roles manage POS staff.
