How do shareable discount links work on Shopify?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
A shareable link from Discounts > Promote applies one active discount; add ?redirect=/new-path to land on another page.
Discount status
Links work only while the discount is active; save the discount first.
Several discounts on one product
The most recent one applies to the link.
Codes per order
5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code, link codes included.
After the click
Saved to the cart and browser; reopening the link reapplies it.
Several codes in one link
Use a cart permalink: Shopify's developer docs say its discount parameter takes codes separated by commas.

Start with a saved discount: Shopify asks you to create and save a discount code featuring the products or collections you want to link to, and shareable links work only for active discounts.

In Shopify admin
  1. Discounts
  2. Discount name
  3. Promote
  4. Get a shareable link
Step 2: Promote sits at the top right of the discount page.

  1. In Discounts, click the discount you want to promote.
  2. Click Promote, then select Get a shareable link (the Help Center also calls it Get a shareable discount code).
  3. In the Landing page field, choose where the link opens: your home page, a specific collection or a specific product page. The options depend on the products or collections included in your active discounts; an order-wide discount we tested on October 14, 2026 showed no such field.
  4. Optional: select an existing marketing campaign. Its UTM identifier and source are added to the link automatically, so you can follow the discount in that campaign's reports.
  5. Share the link in emails, on social media or on landing pages.
Steps 3–4: choose the Landing page and, optionally, a marketing campaign, then copy the link.

In the Shopify app, tap Discounts, tap the discount you want to promote, then open its menu and choose Get a shareable discount code, the Help Center's name for the app option.

If the page you want isn't among the options in step 3, add a redirect to the URL by hand: Shopify documents this for opening a page other than your store's home page.

  1. Get the shareable link as above.
  2. Change the URL extension from /discount/code to /discount/code?redirect=/new-path.
  3. Replace new-path with the URL extension of the page you want, for example /discount/code?redirect=/collections/fresh-finds.

These rules decide which discount the customer actually gets:

  • One discount per link. A shareable link or QR code can have only a single discount applied to it.
  • The newest discount wins. If you run several discounts on one product, the most recent one applies to your shareable links and QR codes.
  • Combinations follow your settings. The link's discount joins discounts already in the cart only when your discount combination rules allow it. Discounts don't combine automatically; when they can't, the best discount or combination for the customer is selected automatically.
  • Link codes count toward the order limit. Customers can use a maximum of 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on the same order, codes from shareable links included.

When one promotion needs several codes, or specific variants and quantities, use a cart permalink instead: you select the product variants, quantities and discounts, and the same link is reusable, creating a new checkout for each customer. Its discount parameter accepts several codes separated by a comma, so a code that itself contains a comma can't be passed that way.

Until it's removed. The discount applies automatically to the customer's next checkout cart, or to any active carts they have open, and it is saved to their cart and browser.

To shop without it, a customer clicks Remove discount beside the applied code at checkout, or clears their browser's cookies and cached data for your store and then goes to your store directly. Opening the shareable link again reapplies the discount.

To end a promotion early, you can temporarily deactivate an unexpired discount. Because links work only for active discounts, we read that as the link no longer applying it: our inference from two separate help-page rules.

Shopify says a customer who applies a deactivated discount code to their cart gets the error Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered. When you reactivate an expired discount, its status becomes Active with no set end date.

None of the pages we read on October 14, 2026 (managing discounts, combining discounts, discount codes, the discounts FAQ and the cart permalink docs) says whether a shareable link shows that error, what it shows for an expired or scheduled discount, or whether an old link works again after reactivation.

If a code from a link stops applying, start by checking that the code is active, in date and under its usage limit.
