What is the Shopify Balance card?

Shopify's card for business spending is the Shopify Balance card, a Visa Commercial card issued by Celtic Bank. Shopify calls it a "commercial card" and describes "business spending cards linked to your main Balance account".

No Shopify help or product page we read calls the card a debit or prepaid card — across the Shopify Balance help section and three shopify.com product pages (Balance, Credit and Finance), read on October 11, 2026. One Shopify changelog post dated July 5, 2024 does, in its title: "Shopify Balance Debit Card".

Shopify's label varies: the note on Managing your Shopify Balance account says "Visa® Commercial Credit Card", while the Shopify Balance overview says "Visa® Commercial cards" (both read October 11, 2026). Before relying on either, read the Shopify Balance Card Agreement you agree to when opening the account.

Who can get a Shopify Balance card?

You need a physical residential address in the United States or Puerto Rico (other US territories aren't supported) — one item on the full eligibility checklist. If eligible, Shopify opens a Balance account automatically the first time you activate Shopify Payments; if you already use Shopify Payments, only the account owner can set Balance up, from Finance in your Shopify admin.

The virtual card is activated automatically after you set up your Balance account; the physical card is free to order.

Business purchases only
Shopify limits the card to business purposes; personal, family or household use may result in immediate termination of your Balance account.

What are the Shopify Balance card limits, fees and ATM rules?

As of October 2026, most new accounts start with a daily spending limit of $5,000 USD per card and a daily ATM limit of $500 USD, which might increase automatically up to $1,000 USD. Only the physical card works at an ATM. Shopify doesn't charge fees for using the card, though ATM provider fees might apply.

Shopify Credit is a separate product, a "pay-in-full business charge card" whose physical card doesn't support a PIN or ATM use.
