Does Google index a password-protected Shopify store?

Short answer
No. Shopify says private mode hides every page from search engines, and search engines don't index trial stores.
New stores
Private mode by default when you first register.
Sitemap
Google can't read it while private mode is on, so submit or recheck it after launch.
Indexing time
Not guaranteed; Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks.
Development stores
Always password protected, per Shopify's developer documentation.

What does the Shopify password page hide from Google?

Shopify's SEO FAQ lists private mode as a reason a store is missing from search and says "Search engines don't index trial stores." New stores start in private mode by default. For trials, Shopify's launch guide says the store is "automatically in private mode", while Shopify's free-trial page says it is "initially in private mode, or its checkout is inactive".

Shopify's access help is explicit:

In private mode, all of your online store's pages are hidden from visitors and search engines, and your online store displays a customizable landing page instead.

The Shopify pages we read on October 12, 2026 don't say which status code, noindex tag or robots rule the password page serves. Google's general rule: it indexes only pages "accessible to the public".

What changes when you remove the password?

Launching requires a plan, among other required steps; how to remove the password page lists them.

Every store generates a sitemap.xml, and Shopify's sitemap guide says submitting it to Google Search Console "helps Google find and index pages" — see the Search Console steps.

Verifying before launch
Not ready to launch? You can turn private mode off to verify your domain, then back on — but Google can't read your sitemap while private mode is on.

Timing varies by source: the sitemap guide says "Google doesn't guarantee how long it will take", Google's recrawl guide says crawling can take "a few days to a few weeks", and the SEO FAQ's "within 48 to 72 hours" is Shopify's own figure — plan for the longer end.

Launched, but your Shopify store is not showing on Google?

Shopify's test is a Google search for site:yourshopifystore.com: if pages appear, "Google is indexing your site". If they don't, read the site: operator with care and check these causes Shopify documents:

  • private mode is still on: the password page hides every page;
  • a new store "might not have been indexed yet";
  • a migration without redirects from your old website;
  • a page or product hidden from search on purpose with metatags or a metafield.

A development store is a separate case: Shopify's developer documentation says dev stores are "always password protected".
