When do you have to give a customer a tax invoice?

The duty starts with a customer's request once you're registered for GST, or required to be:

If a customer asks for a tax invoice, you must provide one within 28 days, unless it is for a sale of $82.50 (including GST) or less.

A non-resident on simplified GST registration can't issue tax invoices.

What does an Australian tax invoice have to show?

For taxable sales under A$1,000, the ATO lists 7 details:

  • that the document is intended to be a tax invoice;
  • the seller's identity;
  • the seller's ABN;
  • the date issued;
  • a description, quantity (if applicable) and price of the items;
  • the GST amount, or “Total price includes GST” when GST is exactly one-eleventh of the total;
  • the extent to which each sale is taxable.

From A$1,000, add the buyer's identity or ABN; that format also works for smaller sales.

No set heading is required, but the document itself must make clear it is intended to be a tax invoice; per the ATO, a 'Tax Invoice' heading or a statement in the body can do this. A PDF emailed to the customer counts if it carries every required detail above; paper isn't required.

How do you produce a tax invoice from Shopify?

Add your ABN to whichever of Shopify's invoice tools you use, then check the finished document against the details listed above: none of the Shopify help pages we read on October 22, 2026 says your tax number prints on invoices automatically.

Shopify's document templates (early access as of October 2026, rolling out gradually) let you edit a default Invoice without an app.

  2. Shipping and delivery
  3. Documents
Look for the Invoice row in this table; that is the template to edit.

No Documents table in your admin yet? In Shopify's Order Printer app, the built-in Invoice template has no field for your ABN; add it with HTML and Liquid.

Shopify notes that GST-charging businesses in Australia might need their registration number on customer invoices or other notices (check with your tax accountant or a government authority), and shows it added to the Order confirmation email. That email counts as a tax invoice only if it carries every required detail above.
