What Shopify says about refunds for paid themes

Shopify describes a paid theme bought in its Theme Store as final sale. The fees section of Shopify's own terms of service adds a general line, not a theme-specific one: "Shopify does not provide refunds."

As a result, refunds cannot be provided by the theme developer.

The scope is the purchase, not the reason: any paid theme bought in the Theme Store, whatever the reason you want the money back.

How do you try a paid theme before you buy?

Preview it in your admin first. Shopify lets you preview up to 19 paid themes at the same time, and the theme editor works on a previewed theme — brand colours, brand style, your own products. Whether to pay at all is a separate call: how to choose between a free and a paid theme.

The trial stops short of the code. While a theme is on trial you cannot edit its code or use the AI code generator, so anything needing a developer stays untested until you buy.

The one refund Shopify documents

One documented route exists, and it is a move rather than a complaint. A paid theme is licensed exclusively to the store where it was bought, so Shopify's instructions for moving a theme to a new store end with an optional step: once you have closed the original store and bought the theme again for the new one, you can ask Support to refund the original theme invoice, at the original purchase price even if the theme costs more now.

Two limits sit around it. No page we read lists grounds for a refund such as a defect or a theme that is not as described — add-a-theme, unlicensed themes, Shopify's terms and the Theme Store itself, checked September 12, 2026. A second set of four, with shopify.dev's Theme Store requirements in place of unlicensed themes and read the same day, states no refund policy for a theme bought outside the Theme Store.
