Can you create unique single-use discount codes in bulk on Shopify?

Short answer
Yes, through an app or the Admin API (250 codes per call), not the discount form; the admin exports codes but can't import them.

20,000,000 unique codes per store, cumulative; apps can't raise it, deleting codes makes room
Limit per code
Not stated in the docs we read; a Shopify staff forum answer says limits count per code
Shopify Messaging and Forms
Messaging emails use an admin-made discount, Forms a new or existing one; no per-recipient codes in docs we read

Can the admin create codes in bulk?

The form has one code field: type a name or generate a random one. No Discounts help page we read in October 2026 describes a batch option.

Nor can you upload a list:

Discounts can be exported only to a CSV file. You can't import discount codes to your store using CSV files.

Which tools create unique codes in bulk?

A batch comes from an App Store app or, at up to 250 codes per call, the Admin API:

An email campaign in Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) uses an admin-made discount; Forms lets you add a new or existing one. Their help pages we read in October 2026 mention no per-recipient codes.

Every code counts toward a cumulative limit of 20,000,000 unique discount codes per store, which apps can't raise; delete codes to make room.

Does a usage limit apply to each code?

Limits sit on the discount, in its Maximum discount uses card: a total-uses cap and one use per customer.

  2. Create discount
Both usage limits sit in the Maximum discount uses card of the code form.

A total limit of 1 makes each code single-use; one use per customer alone still lets a shopper redeem a second code. See how one use per customer works at guest checkout.

That rests on a Shopify staff member on the developer forum (March 2025), who says a discount's usage limit "applies to each individual redeem code you create, not the combined total across all codes," and that a per-customer limit "is tracked per redeem code, not across the parent discount." The Shopify docs we read in October 2026 don't say whether a limit counts per code.

Before a large import
In February 2026, the same staff member suggested testing a smaller sample before a 100k import. Codes for known customers? An eligibility list may suit better.
