Can a Shopify rich text metafield hold a table?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
No: Shopify.dev says Rich text metafields support headings, lists, links, bold and italics; use a linked page, or JSON for per-product columns.

Does a Rich text metafield accept a table?

Not in any Shopify page we read on November 3, 2026. Shopify.dev describes the type as supporting "headings, lists, links, bold, and italics", and the Help Center adds underline.

Our test agrees: on November 2, 2026, the Rich text value editor on a product in our development store had no table button.

  2. Product metafields
On a product's Rich text metafield, the toolbar stops at text style, bold, italic, links and lists.

Shopify.dev says metaobjects "use the same data types", and a Rich text field we opened in a Content > Metaobjects entry on November 3, 2026 showed the same toolbar, without a table button.

A Rich text field inside a metaobject entry shows the same toolbar, again without a table button.

Where should the table go instead?

Shopify's rich text editor inserts tables in pages, blog posts, and product and collection descriptions; metafields are not on that list. Two carriers remain:

Page reference metafield
  • Build the table on a page in Online Store > Pages
  • Link that page with a Page metafield, no code
  • Shows on product templates through dynamic sources, in sections and blocks that support them
JSON metafield
  • Shopify's own example: "a table of specifications that has different columns for each product"
  • Typed into an admin dialog
  • How it shows on the product page depends on your theme

A page's Content toolbar has the table button that both Rich text editors above lack, shown here with sample values.

How does the table reach your product page?

A Page metafield reaches product templates through dynamic sources in sections and blocks that support them; a Rich text metafield connects only to theme settings that work with rich text. For a different chart page on each product, follow the steps we tested in Horizon.

JSON is raw data "for advanced use cases": entering it takes no code, but how it shows depends on your theme, so read when a type still needs Liquid first.
