The short version
Rentshelf turns a Shopify product into a rental booked by date, and in our November 1, 2026 test it charged the deposit in the same checkout as the rental: an $800 rental with a $500 security deposit became one $1,300 line.
Returning the deposit is a refund amount you type in Shopify Orders, because marking a rental returned in the app refunds nothing.
The deposit came through the cart's Check out button, while a checkout opened directly, bypassing the cart, charged only the rental, so keep customers on the cart.
On Shopify Payments the deposit also carries its share of the card fee, which a refund does not return; in our test, with 20% VAT included in prices, the deposit was also taxed with the rental.
A rental app that books Shopify products by date, charges a security or booking deposit at checkout, and tracks pickups and returns, while refunds stay in Shopify Orders.

Should You Install Rentshelf?
Find your store in column one; the sections below show what each answer rests on.
Should you install Rentshelf, by rental store
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You rent out dresses, props or equipment booked online and want a refundable deposit taken with the rental | Install it | In our November 1, 2026 test the cart's checkout charged an $800 rental and a $500 deposit as one $1,300 line |
| You need one-click deposit refunds or rentals created at the till | Skip it: look at Miko or FlexCon | Each of those names that feature on its App Store listing, read October 31, 2026; Rentshelf leaves refunds to Shopify Orders |
| You rent up to 3 items, booked no more than 15 days ahead | Rentshelf's Free plan | Free covers 3 rental products and bookings 15 days ahead, per Rentshelf's pricing page and listing on October 31, 2026; buffer days start on Starter, and in our test the return day stayed open to the next booking |
| You rent 4 to 25 items, book up to 90 days ahead, or hand items over at a counter | Rentshelf's Starter plan | Rentshelf lists 25 products, bookings 90 days ahead, buffer days and POS check-in from Starter at $9.99 a month, per its pricing page and listing on October 31, 2026; we saw the POS settings screen, not the till |
| You rent more than 25 items, take bookings months ahead or need signed agreements | Rentshelf's Growth plan | Growth at $19.99 a month, per Rentshelf's pricing page on October 31, 2026, removes the product cap, books 365 days ahead and adds typed-name rental agreements |
What Rentshelf Does for a Rental Store, and What Stays in Shopify
Key takeaway
A rental store needs three things a normal product page does not: dates the customer picks, a guarantee that the same item is not booked twice, and a deposit that comes back when the item does. No Shopify Help Center page we have found describes a built-in security deposit for an item that comes back, so this is app territory (the boundary of that search is at the end of the deposit section).
Rentshelf adds the dates and the deposit to your existing products and checkout. Here is the split:
What Rentshelf handles, and what stays in Shopify
| Job | Rentshelf | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and availability | A date picker on the product page; a booked date closes for that unit, counted from Rentshelf's own rental capacity, not Shopify inventory | The product, its theme and its page |
| The deposit | Set per product: a security deposit on top of the rental, or a booking deposit paid now with the rest later | Charged in a draft-order checkout reached from the cart, as part of the rental line |
| Refunding the deposit | Nothing: marking a rental Returned changes only its status | Orders > Refund, with an amount you type |
| A booking deposit's balance | A Shopify payment link sent on the due date, or a balance tracked for manual or offline collection | A draft order invoice; the link asks the customer to pay and does not charge a saved card |
| Pickup and delivery | A label-only delivery method records the customer's choice; its native-pickup checkout is a pilot limited to Rentshelf's demo store | Pickup in store is a built-in checkout option |
| Counter handovers | A Shopify POS tile to check rentals out and back in (listing and settings screen; not tested at a till) | Shopify POS |
| Rental agreements | Terms signed with a typed name through a private booking link, on Growth | — |
Rentshelf's App Store listing and help docs, read October 31, 2026; Shopify Help Center pages on draft orders and pickup in store; behaviour from our test on a development store, November 1, 2026.
Two Shopify pieces sit underneath. The deposit checkout is a Shopify draft order with an invoice, and the listing's data access includes draft orders. Shopify's pickup in store is a checkout option of its own, which Rentshelf's label-only delivery method does not select.
Rentshelf launched on May 11, 2026 and, as of October 31, 2026, carried a 5.0 rating from 4 reviews and no Built for Shopify badge.
When another tool fits better. Two needs change the answer. Of the nine rental listings our guide compares, only Miko lists one-click deposit refunds to the original payment method; FlexCon lists creating a rental through POS, both on their App Store listings as read October 31, 2026. For signed contracts, RentBase lists contracts with e-signature on its Pro tier, while Rentshelf's own agreements, signed with a typed name, come with Growth. Our rental guide sets out what each of those nine listings documents.
Rentshelf is built for items that come back. If you sell time rather than things, such as classes or appointments, start with booking apps for services.

How Does Rentshelf Charge the Deposit at Checkout?
Key takeaway
You set the deposit on each product, on its Pricing tab in Rentshelf; Settings > Deposits also sets a default booking-deposit percentage for new rental products. The product's Deposit card offers two models: a security deposit, an extra refundable amount on top of the rental, and a booking deposit, a share of the rental paid now with the rest later. Each takes a percentage or a fixed amount, labelled USD in our USD-based test store, and a fixed amount overrides the percentage.

Security deposit or booking deposit
| Security deposit | Booking deposit | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An extra, refundable amount on top of the rental | Part of the rental paid now, the rest later |
| Charged at checkout in our test | Rental and deposit together: $800 + $500 as one $1,300 line | 20% due today: $200 of a $1,000 rental |
| What follows | Nothing, until you refund it | The $800 balance, by payment link or collected by you, with the due date 14 days before the rental by default |
| How the money goes back | A refund you type in Shopify Orders | It is rental income, not a refund |
Rentshelf's deposit settings and help docs, read October 31, 2026; amounts from our test on a development store, November 1, 2026, through the cart's Check out button.
How the deposit reaches the payment. When the customer presses Check out in your theme's cart, Rentshelf sends them to the checkout of a Shopify draft order it creates. In our test that checkout showed the dress at $1,300: the $800 rental and the $500 deposit on one line, with “Rental Quote” and “Security Deposit” listed under it. The prop with a 20% booking deposit charged $200 today and showed the $800 remaining balance on its line.
The order that comes out of it carries the same single line, with the deposit recorded in the line's details rather than as a separate item. That matters later: when you return the deposit, there is no deposit line to pick, only an amount to type.
- Orders
Keep customers on the cart. Our first checkout, opened directly and bypassing the cart, charged only the rental price; the deposit stayed as text on the line. Rentshelf's Storefront settings offer to hide dynamic checkout buttons on rental products, and the screen calls it the recommended default: rental products show Rent Now and hide dynamic checkout. Leave that setting on.
Why charge the deposit instead of holding it on the card. A card authorization on Shopify Payments has to be captured within 7 days, longer periods are for Shopify Plus stores, and manual capture is a store-wide setting that applies only to online orders. None of the Shopify pages we read describes capturing payment per product, or a longer hold below Plus, and the Rentshelf docs we read describe charging and refunding, not holding. Our fraud guide explains how long an authorized payment can wait.
Tax follows the line. In our test, with prices including 20% VAT on a manual tax setup for the Ukraine market, checkout calculated tax on the whole $1,300 line, deposit included: $216.67, where the $800 rental alone would have carried $133.33. Rentshelf's help docs warn, in their words, “Do not assume a line-item label creates a separate tax-exempt item.” No Shopify help page we have found says how a refundable deposit is taxed.
Shopify's own additional fees are not taxed, but they are in early access for selected stores and meant for fees the law requires, not for bookings. Which tax rule applies to a deposit is a question for your jurisdiction; Shopify's tax overrides work on whole products, and here the deposit shares the rental's line.
The absences stated in this article are what these pages do and don't describe, as read on October 31, 2026: Shopify Help Center pages on refunds, payment authorization and capture, draft orders, partial payments, taxes, tax overrides and additional fees, pickup in store and Shopify POS, plus Shopify's changelog; and Rentshelf's help docs, FAQ, changelog and pricing page.
How Do You Refund or Keep a Rental Deposit?
Key takeaway
Rentshelf's help docs send you to Shopify for every deposit refund, and in our test the app had no refund button of its own. Because the deposit is part of the rental line, you return it as an amount, in full or in part:
- Open the order in Orders and click Refund.
- Leave the item quantity at 0 and type the deposit, or the part you return, into Refund amount.
- Add a reason, such as “Security deposit returned”, which only your staff can see.
- Click the refund button and confirm.
- Orders
- Refund
Keeping part of the deposit for damage is the same move with a smaller amount: Shopify lets you issue partial refunds until you reach the order total, and the order turns Partially refunded. In our test, refunding $500 of the $1,300 order left a net payment of $800. The order's tax line still read $216.67 afterwards, so the tax charged on the deposit stayed on the order after the deposit went back, and the refund screen itself warns: “For accurate sales and taxes, refund items or add a discount for partial refunds.”
The refund and the booking are two separate records. What each action changes:
What each action changes
| Your action | What Shopify does | What Rentshelf does | Your next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refund part of the order (the deposit) | Order turns Partially refunded | Nothing; the booking stays Confirmed | Mark the rental Returned when the item is back |
| Refund the whole order | Order turns Refunded | Nothing; the booking stays Confirmed and its dates stay blocked | Cancel the booking in Rentshelf if the rental is off |
| Mark the rental Returned in Rentshelf | Nothing; the order stays Paid | Status changes to Returned | Refund or keep the deposit in Shopify Orders |
| Cancel the order in Shopify | Refunds the payment by default and restocks | Cancels the booking and frees its dates | None, unless you keep part of the money |

The full procedure, including restocking and store credit, is in how to refund an order in Shopify.
What a deposit costs you. The deposit travels in the same card payment as the rental, so it pays the card fee too, and on Shopify Payments a refund does not return it. On Shopify Payments' US online standard rate for the Basic plan, 2.9% + 30¢, the $500 deposit in our example carries $14.50 of that fee, and the 30¢ is paid once for the whole order.
When processing a refund, no additional transaction fee is incurred. However, the original credit card transaction fee isn't refunded to you when issuing a refund.
On a third-party gateway in a country where Shopify Payments isn't available, Shopify credits its transaction fee in proportion to the refund, but only when you refund through your Shopify admin; any card fee is set and charged by that gateway.
On Shopify Payments you can usually issue a refund up to 120 days, depending on the customer's bank; the refund shows as Pending for up to 2 business days, can take up to 10 business days to reach the customer, and comes out of your next payout. A partial refund does not stop the customer from disputing the full order, so record the item's condition before you keep part of a deposit.
Two Rental Setups Rentshelf Handles
Key takeaway
In both setups, an online booking starts with a customer choosing dates on your product page and paying the rental and deposit at checkout. Other bookings are entered by staff as manual bookings in Rentshelf's admin, which, per Rentshelf's docs, do not automatically create a paid Shopify order or collect payment. The two setups differ in what happens between the booking and the return.
Booked Online, Then Shipped or Collected
Key takeaway
When it arises: dresses and costumes for an event, camera kits for a weekend, party props delivered to a venue. The customer books days or weeks ahead and the item ships or waits for pickup.
- Add the product as a rental product in Rentshelf and set how many units you own.
- Pick the deposit model on its Pricing tab, as shown in the deposit section above.
- Add the Rental Calendar Widget block to your product template and switch on the app embed.
What to combine it with: Shopify's own shipping and pickup in store for delivery, and Rentshelf's pickup and return reminder emails, from Starter.
For a booking deposit, Rentshelf can send a Shopify payment link for the balance on the due date. Its docs say the link asks the customer to pay and does not charge a saved card, and that a sent link is not a paid one, so check the booking's balance before handing the item over.
- Apps
- Rentshelf - Product Rentals
- Bookings
Where it breaks: in our test the return day stayed open to the next customer, which is the gap Starter's buffer days between bookings are for. A fixed deposit, entered in our store's US dollars, was not converted in another market currency, and a checkout that bypasses the cart drops the deposit, as covered in the deposit section.
Handed Over and Checked In at the Counter
Key takeaway
When it arises: a local shop where customers collect a costume or a tool and bring it back to the same counter. When the booking is made online, the deposit is already paid at checkout, so the counter's job is the handover and the check-in.
Rentshelf's POS settings screen lists three steps:
- Open Shopify POS on the device at the counter and sign in to your store.
- Go to Settings, then POS apps, then Rentshelf, and add the Rentshelf rentals tile to your home screen.
- Tap the tile to see the day's pickups and returns, and use Check out to customer and Mark returned.
- Apps
- Rentshelf - Product Rentals
- Settings
- Shopify POS
Two boundaries before you plan around it. The claim rests on Rentshelf's listing and this screen: we did not test the tile on a device, and Rentshelf's help docs we read have no page describing POS pickup and return check-in (see the box in the deposit section). Marking an item returned at the till refunds nothing either; Shopify POS can refund an order fully or partially, and exchanging an item needs POS Pro.
What Our Test Store Showed
Key takeaway
We ran this test on November 1, 2026 on our Shopify development store with the Dawn theme, on Rentshelf's Growth plan, which Rentshelf gave us free for testing, with payments through Shopify's test gateway and three rental products: a dress with a fixed security deposit, a camera with a percentage one and a prop with a booking deposit.
What we tried, and what came back
| What we tried | What came back | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Booked a dress with an $800 rental and a fixed $500 security deposit, and checked out from the cart | A draft-order checkout with one $1,300 line, the deposit listed under it, and $216.67 of tax included | The deposit is charged with the rental, and in our tax setup it was taxed as part of that line |
| Booked a prop with a 20% booking deposit | Paid $200 today on a $1,000 rental; the booking showed an $800 balance | The balance is a separate payment you collect later |
| Opened checkout directly, bypassing the cart | Only the rental price was charged; the deposit was text on the line | Keep customers on the cart's Check out button |
| Looked for the draft-orders permission prompt the deposit screen mentions | No prompt appeared, and the draft-order checkout worked | Approve the permission if the app asks for it |
| Booked a date for an item with one unit, then checked that date in the product calendar | The date closed after the booking and reopened after we cancelled the order | One item is not booked twice for the same day |
| Refunded $500 of the $1,300 order | Partially refunded, net payment $800, tax still $216.67; the booking stayed Confirmed | The deposit refund is your step, and the booking does not follow it |
| Shopped with the store's Ukraine market (UAH) selected | The cart showed UAH, the draft-order checkout charged USD, and a fixed 500 deposit showed as UAH 500 on the product page | Test a booking in each market currency before selling across markets |
| Checked how far ahead Growth takes bookings | Dates were open 365 days ahead and closed after that | Growth's 365-day horizon matches its listing |
One test on a Shopify development store, Dawn theme, Rentshelf Growth plan (free from Rentshelf), Shopify's test payment gateway, November 1, 2026; every result read in the Shopify admin, Rentshelf, the storefront or checkout.
The test did not cover live cards and their fees, Shopify Payments, Rentshelf's Free-plan limits, the Horizon theme, an auto-sent balance link and its payment, a signed rental agreement, reminder emails, the POS tile on a device, or uninstalling the app.
Which Rentshelf Plan Fits Your Rental Catalog
Key takeaway
Rentshelf charges by catalog size and booking horizon, not per booking: its pricing page says it adds no per-booking commission, while Shopify's subscription and payment fees stay separate. The plans, in USD as Rentshelf's pricing page showed them on October 31, 2026, with features from Rentshelf's App Store listing:
Rentshelf plans
| Free | Starter | Growth | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $9.99 a month or $99 a year | $19.99 a month or $199 a year |
| Rental products | Up to 3 | Up to 25 | Unlimited |
| Bookings ahead | 15 days | 90 days | 365 days |
| Locations | 1 | 2 | Unlimited |
| What it adds | Up to 3 add-ons per rental product; deposits | Buffer days between bookings, pickup and return reminder emails, seasonal pricing, Shopify POS pickup and return check-in (listing) | Weekend and peak-day pricing, rental agreements, Shopify Flow triggers, Google and Outlook Calendar, Klaviyo, Zoom links |
Rentshelf's App Store listing and pricing page, read October 31, 2026 (the listing shows a EUR estimate; USD from the pricing page); locations from Rentshelf's help docs; the in-app plan table matched on November 1, 2026.
Go by the highest need, not the average. A fourth product, a booking 16 days out or a buffer day each moves you to Starter on its own; a 26th product, a booking past 90 days or a signed agreement moves you to Growth.
Both paid plans start with a 7-day free trial, charges are billed every 30 days, and a downgrade can pause rental products above the new limit while keeping their settings and booking history.
Signed agreements are a Growth feature. Rentshelf's docs describe terms that customers sign with a typed name through a private booking link, with no legal template or identity check from Rentshelf, and a booking that requires an agreement can't be marked Active until it is signed. The product setting says plainly that payment does not count as a signature. We did not switch the requirement on, so the signing flow itself is untested.

Set These Up Before Your First Rental
Key takeaway
The order matters because the deposit is configured on the product but only proven at checkout: a product set up perfectly still loses its deposit if customers can reach checkout without the cart. Step 6 is the one that tells you the earlier steps worked.
Rentshelf's deposit screen says stores must approve the Shopify draft orders permission once after installing or updating the app; in our test no prompt appeared and the draft-order checkout worked anyway, so approve it only if you are asked. Tick each step off as you go:

Before you tick this off
- Refund owner named
- Deduction rules written into your rental terms
Check how tax applies to the rental line that carries the deposit, and confirm the treatment for your jurisdiction before the first rental.
Before you tick this off

- Treatment confirmed for your jurisdiction
The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
In our November 1, 2026 test, Rentshelf did the part of the rental job that Shopify lacks: dates that close once booked, and a deposit charged with the rental. What it leaves to you is the money after the return.
