How to Validate Shipping Addresses on Shopify

Turn on Shopify's Validate shipping address setting, choose it or a validation app, block PO boxes, and fix flagged order addresses before you fulfill.

Listen to a short brief of this article
Hands-free while you multitask

The short version

To validate shipping addresses on Shopify, go to Settings > Checkout, open Address collection under Advanced preferences, select Validate shipping address, click Done, then click Save, and buyers in the 20 countries Shopify supports as of November 2026 get suggestions when Shopify is highly confident about the address they meant.

Shopify also checks order addresses in your admin on any plan, so you can filter orders with issues and fix them before fulfillment.

Use either this setting or a third-party validation app, not both, because Shopify warns that running both can lower checkout conversion.

To block PO boxes or other address types outright, create an Address format validation rule in Checkout Blocks, and check its plan requirement in your own admin, because Shopify's pages disagree on it.

A mistyped street or postal code costs twice: the parcel comes back, and you pay to send it again. Blocking a real address costs too, because the buyer leaves checkout. Shopify gives you several address checks without any app, and the setup is about switching on the right ones and leaving the rest alone.

If parcels are already coming back, start with the order check in your admin. If buyers say checkout rejects their address, start with why suggestions don't show up. Otherwise, read on in order.

What Shopify Checks Before You Change Anything

Key takeaway

Shopify has six address features that bear on validation, and they work in different places. Some are always on, one is on by default, one is a checkbox, and one is a rule you build. Find the check you need in the table, then read its Your move column.

Four of the six run without you touching anything: the field checks, the state or postal code matching and autocomplete (in its 23 countries) at checkout, and the address check on orders in your admin. The decision in front of you is about the rows marked Turn it on and Build a rule: whether to turn on Validate shipping address, whether an app should do that job instead, and whether you need a rule that blocks addresses.

Not the Same as Card Address Verification (AVS)

Address validation checks that a shipping address can be delivered to. The Address Verification System is a card check: Shopify's Shopify Payments settings page says it compares the numeric part of the customer's billing address and postal code with the card issuer's records, and that with Shopify Payments it is deactivated by default. Declining charges that fail AVS is a fraud setting with its own trade-offs, covered in our guide to AVS and CVV decline settings.

How to Turn On Validate Shipping Address

Key takeaway

The setting lives with the other address options on the Checkout settings page. The steps follow Shopify's address collection page, with the Done click that our test admin showed as of November 6, 2026:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
  2. In the Advanced preferences section, click Address collection.
  3. Select Validate shipping address.
  4. Click Done to close the Address collection dialog, then click Save on the Checkout page.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Settings
  2. Checkout
  3. Advanced preferences
  4. Address collection
Step 3: the Validate shipping address checkbox sits in the same dialog as the billing address options.

The same dialog holds the billing address choices, and the checkout editor holds autocomplete. What each of those does, and when to change it, is in our guide to address collection in Shopify checkout settings.

Which Countries Get Address Suggestions

Key takeaway

As of November 2026, the feature covers shipping addresses in 20 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Faroe Islands, France, Guernsey, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States.

The list is Shopify's as of November 2026, so recheck it on Shopify's page against your shipping countries before you rely on it. If a shipping address is outside the list, or the setting is off, the buyer checks out as usual. For those buyers your safety net is the order check in your admin, described below, which may return fewer suggestions; if you consider an app for them, confirm on its listing that it names your countries. The individual field checks, such as input requirement, format and length, stay active for all countries and regions.

Autocomplete has its own, different list: the default autocompletion service covers 23 countries as of November 2026, including Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan, which the validation list doesn't name.

Suggestions Versus Checks That Stop Checkout

Key takeaway

Validate shipping address shows issues and suggestions. Shopify offers a suggestion when there is high confidence in the address the customer intended, so not every typo produces one. Shopify's page doesn't say whether those issues stop a buyer from completing checkout.

Shopify is explicit about the standard checks. Its troubleshooting section says checks such as state or province and postal code matching apply to all regions and can't be deactivated unless the store is on the Shopify Plus plan. If a buyer's shipping address fails one of them, the buyer needs to correct it before completing checkout.

When a buyer can't complete checkout
If buyers tell you checkout won't accept their address, look at the standard checks and your own Address format validation rules first; the troubleshooting table below lists what to check.

Should You Use a Validation App Instead?

Key takeaway

The built-in setting and a validation app do the same job at the same moment: they look at the shipping address as the buyer types it and react. Shopify's address collection page warns that a third-party app can bring conflicting elements or suggestions to checkout, and it is plain about the fix:

To avoid decreased checkout conversion, you should use either the shipping address validation checkout setting in your Shopify admin or a third-party app, but not both simultaneously.
Shopify Help Center — Set up address collection preferences ·

So the choice is one or the other. If you install an app, clear the Validate shipping address box in Settings > Checkout before you test it.

What an App Adds Over the Built-In Setting

Key takeaway

Start from what Shopify already gives you, then compare listings against it:

  • Built in, no app: suggestions at checkout through Validate shipping address, the always-on field checks, and the address check on orders in your admin.
  • With Checkout Blocks (plan requirement disputed): rules that block PO boxes, military and other address types, ZIP codes and patterns, covered in the blocking section below.
  • What app listings claim on top: blocking an address instead of suggesting a fix, and tagging or holding orders or triggering Shopify Flow. These are the developers' claims, read on their listings, not Shopify's.

One side effect is easy to miss. Shopify's regional address components notes say the split address fields that checkout shows for Brazil, Kuwait, Panama, Peru and the Philippines aren't available if you use apps or customizations that read or edit address information; Checkout Blocks is the exception.

How to Block PO Boxes and Other Address Types

Key takeaway

Address format validation is for addresses you can't ship to at all, such as PO boxes for a courier that needs a street address. It runs inside the Checkout Blocks app and offers five rules:

The five Address format validation rules
RuleWhat it blocks or requires
Block specific address typesCheckout for diplomatic, military, parcel locker, PO box and USPS gopost addresses
Block specific ZIP/postal codesCheckout for addresses that contain, or don't contain, the codes you list
Enforce character countsA minimum or maximum number of characters in an address field
Require specific fieldsOptional fields, made required before checkout can proceed
Custom validationCheckout when a field matches a regular expression (regex) pattern you set

Source: Shopify Help Center, supported rules for address format validation, read November 4, 2026.

To set it up, per Shopify's address format validation page:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Checkout Blocks; if it isn't listed, install Checkout Blocks from the Shopify App Store first, as Shopify's Checkout Blocks overview says.
  2. Click Functions, then Create function.
  3. In the Validation section, click Address format validation.
  4. Enter a title for the rule.
  5. Optional: in the Markets section, pick region markets; by default the rule applies to all markets.
  6. Turn on the rules you need, choose the address fields each one validates, and, for rules that support it, edit the error message.
  7. Click Save. The function is saved as Inactive, so select Active from the status dropdown and click Save again.

Shopify's changelog gives a second way in: Settings > Checkout > Checkout rules > Address format validation. Wherever you build it, the effect at checkout is the same. Buyers see an inline error and can't complete checkout until the address is corrected, and the rule is enforced in online and agentic checkouts alike.

Two limits apply. Shopify's limitations note says only shipping addresses are validated, so billing fields can't be targeted. And Shopify deprecated the older Address Blocker block, so build new rules in Address format validation.

For the PO box case on its own, see whether you can block PO boxes at Shopify checkout.

Which Plan Address Format Validation Needs

Key takeaway

The changelog post of June 17, 2026, read on November 4, 2026, says: “Address format validation in Checkout Blocks is now available to all merchants.”

The Checkout Blocks overview, read the same day, says that merchants on the Basic plan or higher can use the dynamic and static content blocks on their Thank you and Order status pages, and that “All other features of Checkout Blocks are available only to Shopify Plus.” The address format validation page itself names no plan.

The Checkout Blocks listing on the Shopify App Store, read November 6, 2026, names address format validation among the customizations that Shopify Plus merchants can extend to the full checkout, while one of its feature lines lists “Set order value limits and address format rules” without a Plus label.

Let your admin settle it

None of these pages overrides the others, so don't plan around any one of them. Before you promise customers a PO box block, open Address format validation in your own admin and check whether it shows a Plus or upgrade label.

  • If it shows none, build the rule and test it with a checkout before you rely on it.
  • If it does show one and you aren't on Shopify Plus, a validation app is your route if its listing says it blocks the address types you need. In the sample above, only the AddressPill listing says it can block PO boxes in checkout, while the VL: Checkout Address Validator listing names automatic PO box rules and the Address Validation iO listing says it detects PO boxes.
  • If you choose an app, clear Validate shipping address, because Shopify advises against running both.

How to Fix Flagged Addresses After an Order Comes In

Key takeaway

Checkout validation catches problems before the order is placed. A second check runs after it, in your admin, whether or not you turned on the checkout setting:

Address validation is available to all merchants on any plan and is always active on your store.
Shopify Help Center — Validating addresses in your Shopify admin ·

Shopify's order address validation page lists when the check runs:

  • A customer places a new online order.
  • An order is created through an API.
  • You create a draft order and add a new or existing customer to it.
  • You add or update a location that you fulfill orders from.
  • You create a shipping label when fulfilling an order.
  • You add a customer profile or update a customer's address in your admin.
  • On Shopify Plus only: you add a B2B company's shipping or billing address, or add or update a B2B company location's address.

Orders from countries outside the supported list still have their addresses inspected, but Shopify says they might not return as many specific suggestions. You can review and resolve issues in your admin on desktop and in the Shopify mobile app.

Find Orders With Address Issues Before You Ship

Key takeaway

The Address validation filter on the Orders list has three options:

  • Not validated: orders excluded from address validation, including orders without shipping addresses.
  • Has issues: orders with address validation warnings or errors.
  • No issues: orders that were validated successfully.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Orders
Choose Address validation in the filters, then Has issues to list the orders that need a look.

The validation result for each order is saved, so you can resolve an address any time before fulfillment. Checking Has issues before each fulfillment run is the cheapest habit in this guide.

Resolve a Warning or an Error

Key takeaway

The steps follow Shopify's resolving issues section, which describes an Edit shipping address dialog; step 4 describes the panel our test admin showed as of November 6, 2026:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.
  2. Click the order with the address issue, or click the address validation icon beside its order number.
  3. In the Customer section, under Shipping address, click Review address issues.
  4. In the panel that opens under Shipping address, select Suggestion and click Use suggestion, select Current and click Mark as valid to keep the address, or click the pencil icon, edit the fields and click Save.
  5. Optional: click Email customer to confirm the address first, or View address checker for the full validation details.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Orders
  2. Order
A test order as of November 6, 2026: two warnings and a preselected suggestion; choosing Current shows Mark as valid.

What you can do depends on the type of issue:

  • Warning (yellow): might cause a delayed or failed delivery. You can accept the suggestion, keep the address with Mark as valid, or edit it.
  • Error (red): very likely to cause a delayed or failed delivery. You can't mark it as valid, and Shopify says you need to update the address before you can fulfill the order. Contact the customer if you aren't sure what it should be.

Can Shopify Flow Correct an Address?

Not by itself. In the lists of Shopify Flow triggers and actions we read on November 6, 2026, none validates an address, and the only action named for addresses updates the editable shipping address of a B2B company location. Flow's Send Admin API request action can use most GraphQL Admin API mutations, and the Admin API's orderUpdate mutation can overwrite an order's shipping address, but you would have to supply the corrected address yourself. None of those triggers is named for addresses, but an app can start a workflow: the AddressPill listing, for example, says the app can “Tag or hold orders and trigger Shopify Flow.”

Why Address Suggestions Don't Show Up

Key takeaway

You turned the setting on, but a buyer with an obvious typo got no suggestion. Or a buyer wrote in to say checkout won't accept their address. Or checkout conversion dipped the week you installed a validation app. Each symptom has a likely cause:

One message looks like an address problem and isn't: “shipping isn't available for this address” means checkout found no shipping rate for that destination, which is a shipping zones and rates question rather than validation.

Address Validation Setup Checklist

Key takeaway

Steps one to three decide how checkout reacts to a bad address, and step two is the one to get right, because the setting and an app shouldn't run together. Step four applies only if you need to block addresses. Steps five and six repeat with every batch of orders. Progress is saved in this browser.

Set up address validation on ShopifyTick each step as you finish it. Skip step four if you don't need to block any address type.

  1. Compare the countries you ship to with the 20 countries Shopify lists for Validate shipping address as of November 2026.

  2. Decide whether Shopify's Validate shipping address setting or a third-party validation app handles checkout suggestions, and run only one of them.

  3. In Settings > Checkout, open Address collection under Advanced preferences, select Validate shipping address, click Done, then click Save, unless an app does this job.

  4. In Checkout Blocks, create an Address format validation function, turn on the rules you need and save it, then select Active from the status dropdown and click Save again. If the option shows a Plus or upgrade label and you aren't on Plus, use a validation app that blocks address types instead.

  5. In Orders, filter by Address validation and choose Has issues to list orders with address warnings or errors.

  6. On the order, click Review address issues, then use the suggestion, mark a warning as valid, or edit the address, and email the customer when you're unsure.

The Bottom Line

Key takeaway

Most of Shopify's address checking is already running on your store. Your part is one checkbox, one choice and one habit.

Suggest at checkout, block only what you can't ship, and fix the rest before fulfillment. The built-in setting needs no app and covers suggestions; an app makes sense when you need it to hold orders, or to block addresses where your admin doesn't offer Address format validation. Blocking is the expensive move, because a blocked buyer may leave, so keep those rules to the address types your carriers genuinely reject.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shopify's own checks need no app. Validate shipping address is a checkbox in Settings > Checkout, and Shopify's page ties it to no plan, while the address validation that checks your orders in the admin is available to all merchants on any plan and is always active. Validation apps charge their own fees, and Address format validation has a disputed plan requirement.
As of November 2026, Shopify lists 20 countries for shipping addresses: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Faroe Islands, France, Guernsey, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States. Buyers elsewhere check out as usual, and field checks such as format and length still run for every country.
Only on Shopify Plus. Shopify says checks such as state or province and postal code matching apply to all regions and can't be deactivated unless the store is on the Shopify Plus plan. If a buyer's shipping address fails one of them, they must correct it before completing checkout. Validate shipping address is a separate checkbox, and Shopify's page on it names no plan.
Shopify advises against it. Its address collection page says a third-party validation app can bring conflicting elements or suggestions to checkout, and that you should use either the checkout setting or the app, but not both, to avoid lower checkout conversion. If you install an app, clear the Validate shipping address box first and test a checkout.
Shopify's help page for the setting describes issues and suggestions but doesn't say they stop checkout, and buyers outside the supported countries check out as usual. Shopify does say the standard state or province and postal code checks stop checkout, as does any Address format validation rule you set to Active.
Use Address format validation in the Checkout Blocks app, after checking your admin for a Plus or upgrade label, as Shopify's pages disagree on the feature's plan. Go to Apps > Checkout Blocks > Functions > Create function > Address format validation, turn on Block specific address types and select PO box. Save, then select Active from the status dropdown and click Save again, because it saves as Inactive.
Shopify's pages disagree, read on November 4, 2026. A June 17, 2026 changelog post says Address format validation is available to all merchants, while the Checkout Blocks overview says every feature is available only to Shopify Plus, except two content blocks that Basic and higher plans can use on the Thank you and Order status pages. Check your admin for a Plus or upgrade label.
Go to Orders, add the Address validation filter and choose Has issues. That lists orders with address validation warnings or errors. Not validated shows orders that were excluded from validation, such as orders without a shipping address, and No issues shows orders that passed. The result for each order is saved, so you can resolve it any time before fulfillment.
No. Mark as valid is available only for warnings, shown with a yellow icon. An error, shown with a red icon, is very likely to cause a delayed or failed delivery, and Shopify says you need to update the address before you can fulfill the order. If you aren't sure of the right address, email the customer from the Review address issues panel.
Not by itself. In the lists of Flow triggers and actions we read on November 6, 2026, none validates an address. Flow's Send Admin API request action can use most GraphQL Admin API mutations, including ones that edit orders, but you supply the corrected address. One validation app's listing says it can trigger Shopify Flow, so a workflow can start from the app instead.
No. Address validation checks whether a shipping address is deliverable. The Address Verification System compares the numeric part of the billing address and postal code with what the card issuer has on file, and with Shopify Payments it is deactivated by default. You manage it in the Shopify Payments fraud prevention settings, not under Address collection.
Validate shipping address works on shipping addresses, and Address format validation rules can't target billing fields. AVS, a card check on Shopify Payments, compares the numeric part of the billing address and postal code with card issuer records. On Shopify Plus, admin validation also runs when you add a B2B company's shipping or billing address, or add or update a B2B company location's address.
