The short version
With a $20 product and Shopify Payments, Shopify Basic gets cheaper than Gumroad from the 16th direct sale of the month, about $312 in sales on monthly billing, because Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 per sale with no monthly fee and Basic costs a flat $39.
At 50 sales Gumroad's fee is $125 against Basic's $39, but that gap has to pay for tax work: Gumroad collects and remits sales tax and VAT as merchant of record in the regions where it has tax obligations, while on Shopify registering and filing are your job.
Gumroad's Discover marketplace (30%, processing included) and physical products are the other two reasons to stay or to move.
The Quick Verdict
Here is the answer by profile; the fee arithmetic and the tax rules sit underneath.
Gumroad, Shopify, or both — by seller profile
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than about 16 direct sales a month at $20 (under about $312 in sales) | Stay on Gumroad | No monthly fee; below the crossover 10% + $0.50 a sale costs less than Basic's $39 |
| Steady direct sales above the crossover, digital products only | Shopify Basic with the free Digital Products app | At $1,000 a month Gumroad's fee is $125 against Basic's $39 |
| Most of your sales come through Gumroad Discover | Stay; run both only if direct sales alone clear the crossover | Discover's 30% includes processing and brings buyers who find you on Gumroad |
| EU or UK buyers, and you won't register or file VAT yourself | Gumroad, or budget for the tax work | Gumroad collects and remits VAT as merchant of record; on Shopify, filing is yours |
| Physical and digital products in one checkout | Shopify | One store sells both; Gumroad's own pages are unclear on physical goods |
Gumroad vs Shopify at a Glance
Key takeaway
The two answer the same question, where buyers pay for your ebook, template or course, with opposite fee models. Gumroad costs nothing until you sell and then takes a share of every sale; Shopify charges a fixed plan whether you sell or not. Find your row in the verdict above, then read the section behind it; the table below lines the two platforms up fact by fact.
Gumroad vs Shopify for digital sellers
| Gumroad | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $0 | Basic $39 billed monthly, $29 a month billed yearly |
| Platform fee on a direct sale | 10% + $0.50; 5% + $0.50 on new sales once paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000 | None on card sales through Shopify Payments; 2% on Basic through a third-party gateway, and on store-credit or gift-card payments in stores created on or after May 12, 2025 |
| Card processing | 2.9% + $0.30 per card sale, on top of the fee | 2.9% + 30¢ through Shopify Payments on Basic, standard US online cards, the same rate as Gumroad's |
| Marketplace sales | 30% through Discover, processing included | No Discover-style marketplace; eligible stores are listed in the Shop app automatically |
| Sales tax and VAT | Gumroad collects and remits as merchant of record, in regions where it has tax obligations | Shopify calculates and charges; on online-store orders you register, file and pay |
| What you can sell | Digital products, courses, ebooks, memberships, bundles, services; physical goods unclear on Gumroad's own pages | Physical and digital products in one store |

What Gumroad's 10% Covers — and What It Doesn't
Key takeaway
As of October 2026, Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per transaction on sales through your profile or direct links, and no monthly fee.
The headline is not the whole deduction. Gumroad's fees article says the 10% + $0.50 does not include credit card processing of 2.9% + $0.30, or PayPal fees, so a direct card sale costs 12.9% + $0.80 in total. When you refund a sale, Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded part and keeps the processing part.
Payouts follow Gumroad's own rules: weekly, monthly and quarterly payouts need a balance of at least $100 USD (higher in some countries), sales on those schedules are held for at least 7 days, and PayPal payouts carry a 2% fee.
Discover, Gumroad's marketplace, is priced differently. It charges 30% when a new customer finds and buys from you there, and that rate already carries the card fees. Products appear in Discover only after the account reaches a balance from genuine sales and meets Gumroad's other listing conditions.
Sales made through Gumroad's marketplace (discovery sales via Gumroad.com) are subject to a flat 30% fee, which includes all processing fees.
A marketplace finds buyers for you and charges for it. Shopify runs no marketplace like Discover, but stores that meet the Shop app's requirements, including Shopify Payments, are listed in Shop automatically, where customers can discover new stores and products; the Shop and Shopify Catalog help pages we read in October 2026 don't say whether a store that sells only digital products appears in Shop's store search. Other buyers arrive through traffic you bring.
For a marketplace that keeps the buyer relationship to itself, see who owns the customer in our TikTok Shop vs Shopify comparison.
Large sellers get a built-in discount. Once paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, Gumroad charges 5% + $0.50 on new direct sales that month, and the count resets on the 1st. The $0.50 stays, and Discover stays at 30%. A refund that takes you back under $20,000 returns new sales to 10% + $0.50, and a custom fee already set on your account takes precedence. What the 10% does buy is tax handling: Gumroad collects and remits as merchant of record, as the tax section sets out.
When Is Shopify Cheaper Than Gumroad?
Key takeaway
On standard US card sales the processing line cancels out: 2.9% + $0.30 on top of Gumroad's fee, and 2.9% + 30¢ through Shopify Payments on Basic, which costs $39 a month billed monthly or $29 a month billed yearly. What is left to compare is 10% + $0.50 of every sale against one flat fee, and a flat fee wins once enough sales go through it.
Shopify's side of that math has its own weak spot. Basic costs $39 in a month with no sales, where Gumroad costs nothing, and paid apps or an outside payment gateway stack on top of the plan. We break that stack down in why Shopify's sticker price is the floor.
A worked example shows the size of the gap. Take one month: 50 direct sales of an illustrative $20 product (Gumroad allows prices from $0 to $5,000), all paid by standard US cards, with Shopify Payments available.
50 sales of a $20 product in one month
| Gumroad | Shopify Basic, billed monthly | |
|---|---|---|
| Plan fee | $0 | $39 |
| Platform fee on 50 sales | 10% of $1,000 + $0.50 × 50 = $125 | $0 with Shopify Payments |
| Card processing (2.9% + $0.30 per standard US card sale) | $44 | $44 |
| Total for the month | $169 | $83 |
Rates read on Gumroad's pricing page and fees article, October 25, 2026, and Shopify pricing as archived October 24, 2026. USD.
Gumroad's fee comes to $125 against Basic's $39, a gap of $86 a month; processing adds $44 to both, for full bills of $169 and $83. At this price the two fees are equal at about $312 of monthly sales, so with Shopify Payments, Basic is the cheaper of the two from the 16th sale; on yearly billing the line drops to $232, from the 12th sale.
Four things move the crossover for your store:
- Your price. The $0.50 per sale weighs more on cheap products, so the cheaper the product, the fewer dollars of sales it takes for Basic to win.
- Yearly billing. Paying for Basic a year at a time lowers the plan to $29 a month and the crossover with it.
- An outside payment gateway. Without Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a 2% third-party transaction fee on Basic on top of the provider's own fee; our guide to running without Shopify Payments covers when it applies.
- Tax work. Neither the table nor the chart counts it, and on Shopify it is yours; the tax section below says what it involves.
Run Your Own Price and Volume
Key takeaway
The calculator opens on the 50-sale month above. It leaves out card processing, which is the same on both sides for standard US cards, plus Discover sales, apps and tax work; set Shopify Payments to no if your country or business category isn't supported.
Platform fees only, USD per month, rates read October 25, 2026. Card processing ($44.00 here, at 2.9% + $0.30 per standard US card sale) is charged on both platforms and left out of the comparison; with a third-party gateway on Shopify, add the gap between its rate and that one. Not modelled: Discover sales (30% with processing), PayPal fees, store-credit and gift-card payments, a domain, apps, and tax registration and filing.
If what bothers you is the percentage rather than Gumroad itself, a creator platform with a flat monthly plan is a third option, and our Payhip vs Shopify comparison runs the same arithmetic for it.
Who Collects and Pays the Tax?
Key takeaway
This is the part of the 10% that no price page shows. A merchant of record is the seller in the eyes of tax authorities, so whoever holds that role registers, collects and pays over the tax on each sale.
Gumroad Acts as Merchant of Record
Key takeaway
Gumroad's pricing page says it has handled sellers' tax obligations since January 1, 2025, and the tax settings in the seller dashboard were switched off automatically. Its sales tax article says Gumroad acts as merchant of record for all sales, with one exception: physical products shipped to EU buyers carry no VAT at checkout. When such a parcel ships from one EU country to another, Gumroad's VAT article says whether the sale carries a VAT obligation for you depends on your own registration and your country's rules.
Asked whether it collects taxes everywhere, Gumroad's pricing FAQ answers that it collects them in the regions where it has tax obligations as merchant of record.
For all sales to EU and UK buyers, Gumroad acts as the 'merchant of record' for the sale, making Gumroad responsible for collecting and remitting VAT.
The role has a price beyond the fee. Gumroad's terms of service appoint it the reseller of your eligible digital products, and as merchant of record for each resale it reserves the right to set the price at which the product is offered to buyers.
On Shopify, the Tax Work Is Yours
Key takeaway
Shopify's tax overview says it plainly: "Tax is your responsibility." Unless another party such as Global-e takes on that role, most merchants act as their own merchant of record; even on a Managed Markets order that holds only digital products, you automatically become it. Our answer to whether Shopify is the merchant of record covers the exception.
You can use Shopify to automate charging taxes, but you can't use Shopify to remit or file your taxes for you.
For EU buyers of digital goods, you need to charge VAT based on the customer's location, and Shopify can assign the VAT rate for each EU country automatically. Registering and sending the returns is what stays with you, as our EU VAT guide's section on filing lays out.
In the US, Shopify Tax automated filing is closed to new enrollment, so a new store files its own sales tax returns or pays someone to; why it can't be switched on is in our US sales tax guide. The exception is orders placed in the Shop app or on shop.com that ship to or within the US, where Shopify's Shop channel collects, remits and files the tax, though you might still need to include those orders in your reporting to your local or state authority.
The $86 gap in the worked example has to pay for your own filing work; if you sell mostly to EU and UK buyers, weigh the VAT filing before the fee.
What Each Platform Lets You Sell
Key takeaway
Gumroad's product types are digital product, course or tutorial and ebook for one-time payments, plus memberships, bundles and services, priced from free up to $5,000. Single files on products priced above $1 can reach 20 GB; free products are capped at 250 MB in total. License keys exist for software, though Gumroad notes they don't limit access to audio, video or ebook files, and PDF stamping prints the buyer's email on your ebook.
On Shopify, files go out through the free Digital Products app, as a file or as a link from supported providers such as Notion, Canva or Google Drive. Each variant takes up to 50 files with a combined 5 GB, and there is no bandwidth limit on downloads. For license keys or stamped PDFs on Shopify, start with our comparison of digital delivery apps.
This six-minute walkthrough by creator Aurelius Tjin (January 2025) adds ebooks, templates and other downloads to a Shopify store with digital-download apps. It is one practitioner's tutorial; app names on screen may differ from today's listings, and the limits above come from Shopify's help center.
Memberships are built into Gumroad. On Shopify, the free Shopify Subscriptions app creates auto-billed subscriptions that renew weekly, monthly or yearly, on a supported payment gateway. Courses take a different route, covered in our guide to selling courses on Shopify.
Physical products are where Gumroad's own pages disagree. Its list of things not allowed on Gumroad names physical products among high-risk product types, yet its sales tax, VAT and other help articles describe selling and shipping physical products.
If physical goods are part of your plan, ask Gumroad support before you build on it. On Shopify the question doesn't arise: digital goods sell alongside physical ones in the same store.
Moving From Gumroad to Shopify
Key takeaway
What you can take out of Gumroad: a CSV of your customers and their purchases for any date range, and a CSV of subscribers. The Gumroad help articles we read on October 25, 2026 describe no one-click export of products; Gumroad's help points to a test purchase to get your own files back. You don't need to move to get your own domain: Gumroad lets you direct customers to a custom domain like www.yourcoolpage.com instead of yourcoolpage.gumroad.com.
Where it lands on Shopify: Gumroad isn't among the platforms listed by Shopify's Store Migration app, so you use the general route, a product CSV import and a customer CSV import in files of 15 MB or less. Shopify asks that you send marketing emails only to customers who opted in.
You don't have to move everything. Products that sell through Discover can stay on Gumroad at 30% with processing included while the buyers you bring yourself go to Shopify; you then pay Basic plus Gumroad's fees on what stays, so running both pays only once your direct sales clear the crossover on their own. The steps below apply either way, and the first step decides whether the move saves money.

The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
The choice is a fee model and a tax model at once. Gumroad's percentage is cheapest while sales are small and pays for a merchant of record; Shopify's flat plan is cheapest once sales are steady and hands the tax work back to you.
