- Short answer
- Capital loan pages leave default actions to your agreement; Shopify's Help Center says Shopify Credit cards lock while Capital is in default
- Shopify Credit cards
- A payment toward Shopify Credit doesn't lift the lock; after too much time, access might not return
- Business collateral (loans)
- Loan agreements carry a security interest; collateral doesn't include your personal property or assets
- Loan triggers
- Default might follow a missed 6- or 12-month minimum, an off-track 18-month term, or paused or failed repayments (US: repeated)
- Merchant cash advances
- Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, UK: default may follow paused or failed payments; no deadline to remit the total
- Manual payment (US loans)
- Any amount over $1 USD, up to the entire outstanding balance
- Not on the pages we read
- Penalties, fees, collections or a grace period on a Capital default
What happens after Shopify Capital goes into default?
Shopify's Capital pages don't list the actions it can take. The US, Australia, Canada, Germany and France pages refer you to your loan agreement for the actions that might be taken if you miss minimum payments.
What the Help Center does spell out lands on Shopify Credit. Your Shopify Credit cards are locked while your Capital financing is in default, and a payment toward your Shopify Credit account doesn't remove the lock. Cards also lock for other reasons.
If too much time has passed after your Shopify Capital financing went into default, then you might not be eligible to access your Shopify Credit cards again, even after you repay in full.
Your cards can unlock after the default is resolved.
On October 14, 2026 we read Shopify's Capital help section, its Shopify Credit account page and shopify.com/capital. None lists penalties, fees, collection steps or a grace period for a Capital default, or puts a length on “too much time”.
The Shopify Payments terms let Shopify deduct from your payout or reserve account amounts you owe “under this Agreement or any other agreement you have entered into with us or our affiliates”, without naming Capital. We did not read the Capital agreements themselves or the Shopify Credit Program Terms.
Can Shopify claim your business assets after a default?
On a loan, yes — business assets, not personal ones. Shopify's Capital glossary says its loan agreements include a security interest, a legal right to business collateral in the event of default. A UCC-1 financing statement, which may be filed depending on factors such as the size of your loan, gives Shopify a right to claim that collateral as repayment after a default.
Collateral doesn't include your personal property or assets, and the filing may be removed from the public record once the loan is paid back in full. More on what secures a Capital loan or advance.
One limit comes from the debt itself, not the default: if you used Shopify Payments when you received Capital funding, you can't deactivate Shopify Payments until the total amount owed is fully repaid.
What counts as a default on Shopify Capital?
On a loan, three things can trip it — the minimum milestones, the 18-month term and failed payments (table below). Missing a minimum at the 6-month or 12-month evaluation point can put the loan in default (Shopify's pages hedge it with “might”). If slow sales put you off track for the maximum term of 18 months, the US page says you “could be in default”.
| Financing | Minimum repayment checkpoints | When failed payments may mean default |
|---|---|---|
| US loans | 30% of the total loan by month 6; 60% of the total payment amount by month 12 | Accepted on or after March 9, 2026: still failing or paused after multiple retries. Earlier: debit payments consistently paused or failing |
| Loans in Australia, France, Germany | The same 30% and 60% minimums | Debit payments paused or fail |
| Loans in Canada | 30% of the total payment amount by month 6; 60% by month 12 | Debit payments paused or fail |
| Merchant cash advances in Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK | None named on these pages; no deadline to remit the total | Paused or failed payments or remittances |

How do you stay out of default on Shopify Capital?
Shopify's answer is the manual payment: its US page calls it essential to monitor your loan payment balance and make a manual payment to avoid defaulting.
- Any size works: on a US loan you can pay back any amount over $1 USD or clear up to the entire outstanding balance.
- When it may be required: on a US loan, if your sales don't meet the minimum payment, or a monthly-fee repayment fails, you might be required to make a manual payment.
- No funding promise: on a loan, making a payment doesn't automatically qualify you for more financing.
