If your driver's license or provincial or territorial card already proved your identity, it can't prove your address too: choose a different document from the list.

Which identity documents does Shopify Payments accept?

Your identity document must include your full legal name and date of birth, and can't be expired:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Citizenship card
  • Work permit
  • Study permit
  • Permanent resident card
  • Provincial or territorial photo ID card, excluding Health ID cards
  • Certificate of Indian Status card
  • Birth certificate

If your details are correct and Shopify still asks you to verify, a selfie with a valid photo ID can replace separate ID and address uploads.

What gets rejected, and when is a business document needed?

Photograph the original
Shoot a physical original in color with a camera. Photocopies, scans, screenshots, photos of screens or printouts, and photos pasted into other documents are not accepted.

A digitally issued document goes in as the original, unaltered PDF with all pages. Photo ID uploads as PNG or JPEG; proof of address can also be a PDF. See uploading a document that passes.

If Shopify can't verify your business, you might need a business document with its legal name and address. The accepted documents are valid letters or documents from a municipal, provincial, territorial or federal government, a CRA Notice of Assessment or Re-Assessment dated within the past 12 months, federally issued Corporate Profile Reports, and partnership registrations or agreements. Screenshots and PO box addresses don't qualify.
