What do red or blinking lights on a Shopify Tap & Chip card reader mean?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
On a Tap & Chip, one red light is low battery and the first and fourth flashing mean tampered; blue lights mark pairing and payment.
Tampered reader
First and fourth lights flash red; tampering, a severe drop or unstable power can cause it.
Firmware update
A required update can make the reader unavailable for up to 10 minutes and needs at least 50% battery.

What do two blinking red lights mean?

If the first and fourth lights flash — Shopify's "two flashing red lights" case — the reader is tampered and can no longer be used. Its security page describes that tampered state as red LEDs on both the left and right.

Tampering, a severe drop or an unstable power source can cause it, and the reader needs to be replaced: request a replacement. A single red light is Shopify's low-battery signal; the pages we read decode no other red pattern (note below).

What do the battery, blue and flashing lights mean?

The other documented patterns are routine:

What if the lights match none of these?

What Shopify's Tap & Chip pages don't decode
No page we read decodes a lone red light beyond low battery, two red lights other than the first and fourth, or lights during an update. Read October 9, 2026: the five Tap & Chip help pages in our sources.

A required firmware update can make the reader unavailable for up to 10 minutes, an optional one for up to 2 minutes, and it needs at least 50% battery to apply. Still won't pair or connect? Work through the pairing fixes.
