Where does the vendor list in Shopify come from?

In Shopify, a vendor lives on products: you create vendors and assign them in each product's Product organization section, one per product. Shopify's Admin API calls its vendor list “The list of vendors added to products.”

None of the Help Center or shopify.dev pages we read in October 2026, on vendor info, bulk editing, CSV import, collection conditions and Search & Discovery filters, describes a delete action or says when an unused vendor leaves that list. In our development store (October 18, 2026), a vendor used by one product left the Vendor picker once we reassigned it.

  2. Your product
  3. Product organization
  4. Vendor
Multi-managed Vendor is gone from the picker after its only product moved to Snowboard Vendor.

The Delete vendor action in Shopify Bill Pay removes a vendor profile only when no bill payments are scheduled, and those vendors aren't associated with your products list or your products' Vendor field.

How do you clear a vendor from every product?

Find every product with the vendor, then change them in one pass (renaming a vendor works the same way):

  1. In Products > All, turn off Hide archived: otherwise archived products stay hidden from the main product list.
  2. Filter by vendor: searching vendor:"Vendor name" lists the products that carry it.
  3. Select the products with the checkboxes and open the bulk editor.
  4. Click Columns, add the vendor property and type the correct vendor in each row.

  2. All
Step 2: one search shows the products that still carry the vendor.

A CSV import also works and can clear the field: with Overwrite products with matching handles selected, a blank Vendor column overwrites the vendor as blank. Check how blank columns behave first.

What happens to collections that use the vendor?

An automated collection can include products by vendor; with is equal to, the vendor needs to exactly match the whole value you enter. By our reading, a condition naming the old vendor no longer applies to the products you changed, so rewrite it.

Shopify warns that is not equal to conditions excluding by Vendor might not filter products correctly, so check the collection's products afterwards.
