Does Shopify have a profit margin calculator?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Yes: Shopify's free margin calculator works from cost and markup; shipping and acquisition costs need its Advanced mode.
Formula
(Sell price − Cost per item) ÷ Sell price × 100
Fees and returns
No field for either on the calculator page we read on November 2, 2026
In your admin
Cost per item shows projected Profit and Margin on the product page
Why numbers differ
Shopify's example: 50% on the product page, 33% in the Gross profit by product report after a 25% discount

What does the free Shopify margin calculator compute?

Shopify's profit margin calculator on shopify.com needs no sign-in. Enter a Cost per item and a Markup (a slider up to 300%), and it returns a selling price and margin by the formula (Sell price − Cost per item) ÷ Sell price × 100. Margin is a share of the selling price; markup is what you add on top of cost.

What costs does the calculator leave out?

Its Advanced mode adds Shipping and Customer acquisition cost (CAC) fields, which the basic mode leaves out. The calculator page we read on November 2, 2026 — fields and six FAQ answers — has nothing on payment fees or returns and no field for other expenses; its FAQ says to include “every cost for making, storing, shipping, and selling your product.”

Our own example, for a US store on Basic paid by online card through Shopify Payments: a $50 product costing $30 has a 40% margin. The 2.9% + 30¢ fee takes $1.75, leaving $18.25 — a 36.5% margin before shipping, returns and CAC.

Shopify's Performance by marketing channel report shows CAC only for channels that report cost data to Shopify; our line-item breakdown builds the full net margin.

What does the Shopify admin show instead?

Enter Cost per item in a product's Price section and the admin shows projected Profit and Margin there, by the same formula — unless you select Charge tax on this product in a store whose prices include tax.

  3. Price
Fill in Cost (Cost per item) and Profit and Margin appear beside it in the Price card (a dev-store product).

After you sell, filter Analytics › Reports by the Profit Margin category. Profit counts only sales that had a cost when sold, so a cost added later won't fix past reports.

  2. Reports
Our dev store's Reports list, filtered by Category is Profit Margin, showed the Gross profit reports.

Gross margin in profit reports divides by net sales after discounts and refunds, the product page by full price: in Shopify's example, a $20 T-shirt costing $10 shows 50% on the product page but 33% in the Gross profit by product report after a 25% discount to $15. Shopify's Help also lists Profit margin by order, which counts shipping, duties and import taxes; our dev store's Profit Margin list didn't show it.
