Does Shopify add package weight to shipping weight?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Yes for weight-based rates and Shopify Shipping label prices; for carrier-calculated rates, the help pages we read don't say.
Combined weight-based rates
The default package's weight is added to each product's weight, not once per cart
Labels
You adjust and confirm the Total weight (with package) field before buying
Zero package weight
For weight-based rates, a default package weight of zero bases rates on product weight alone

Do weight-based rates include the package weight?

Yes. With weight-based rates, Shopify adds your store default package's weight to the products' weight to pick the rate; a package assigned to a variant overrides it only in single-item orders. In Shopify's example, 4.9 kg of products plus the package reach 5.0825 kg, so the customer pays the $5.00 USD rate, not $3.00 USD.

When weight-based rates from different shipping profiles are combined, the default package's weight is added to each product's weight, not once per cart.

Give the default package the empty box's real weight, or, per Shopify's rate troubleshooting page, set that weight to zero to base rates on product weight alone — the fit if product weights already include packaging. The packaging, rate and label pages we read on November 5, 2026 don't say what Shopify counts when the package weight is blank.

Edit package on the store default box: the Weight (empty) field sits beside the size fields.
A blank weight shows as 0 kg

In our development store on November 5, 2026, the default box's Weight (empty) field was blank, yet the Packages list showed it as 0 kg. So a 0 kg row doesn't prove a value was set: open Edit package and type 0 or the box's real weight.

Does a Shopify Shipping label include the package?

Yes. Shopify's label requirements page treats the product and its container as two weights:

Your product weight is combined with the weight of the box, envelope, or other shipping container that you use to ship your product.
Shopify Help Center — Requirements and considerations for buying shipping labels ·

That combined weight sets the shipping cost. When you buy a label, adjust and confirm the Total weight (with package) field before you pay.

What about carrier-calculated rates?

Shopify sends the default package's dimensions to your carrier along with your order's weight, and its shipping strategy page asks for accurate product and package weights.

Whether the package's weight is added to the weight the carrier gets, none of the packaging, rate-setup, carrier-calculated shipping or shopify.dev CarrierService pages we read on November 5, 2026 says. Keep both weights accurate.
