Do you need to update Shopify Payments when your Shopify Balance account details change?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
No — Shopify keeps sending payouts to the right Balance account; third-party links like eBay need a manual update.
Bill payments and linked services
Scheduled bill payments update themselves; update eBay, Etsy or utility links yourself, possibly by reconnecting Balance.
Accounts created before January 2025
When the move to Fifth Third Bank starts, routing and account numbers change; Shopify notifies you if yours are affected.
Switching to an outside bank
A new external account pauses payouts for 3–5 business days; switching to Balance doesn't.

Do Shopify payouts follow your new Balance account details?

If Shopify Balance is your payout account, Shopify's Shopify Payments setup guide says:

Your Shopify payouts are automatically deposited into the correct Shopify Balance account even if your account details change. No action required on your part.

The same page names one case: Balance accounts created before January 2025 are moving from Evolve Bank & Trust to Fifth Third Bank. None of the Shopify Help Center pages we checked on October 3, 2026 — the Shopify Payments setup page and the Balance payout, account and feature pages — says what happens to payouts already in transit during this move.

When the migration starts, Balance accounts created before January 2025 get new routing and account numbers. Shopify notifies you if your numbers are affected, and of the date the old ones stop working.

Which linked services still need your new account details?

Scheduled bill payments update automatically. But if your Balance account is linked to providers such as eBay, Etsy or utility companies for automatic debits or credits, you need to update your details with each provider yourself. You might need to disconnect and reconnect Balance to them.

Changing your business details while you use Balance is a separate question: see whether you can edit your details with Balance, Credit or Capital.

When should you change your Shopify payout account?

When you want payouts somewhere other than Balance — a change of Balance account details doesn't require it. You can change the payout account at any time: on the Manage Main account page in Balance, click Change payout account.

Switching to Balance doesn't trigger a payout pause. Moving away from it changes this:

If you switch payouts to a different bank account, payouts already scheduled go to the old account; that is a general Shopify Payments rule, not one written for Balance. For other holdups, see what can delay a payout.
