The short version
Set up Google Ads conversion tracking on Shopify through the free-to-install Google & YouTube channel: link one Google Ads account and, per one Google page, it creates a Purchase conversion action as your account default plus six secondary actions for observation; another Google page suggests three defaults, so check your own account.
Before you remove any old tag, make that Purchase action primary and move your campaigns' bidding to it, then clear duplicates from the places Google names: custom pixels, additional scripts, checkout.liquid and theme.liquid.
Awaiting conversions typically means the action is under 48 hours old, campaigns are paused or traffic is low; Misconfigured means recording stopped because of a setup error or broken tag.
Google says it's best to verify with Tag Assistant or wait for a conversion you know came from an ad click, because clicking your own ad is charged; a test made by going straight to the conversion page without an ad click may not appear in Google Ads.
Shopify shows orders, but Google Ads shows no purchases. Or one order appears in Google Ads as two conversions. Or a conversion action sits on a status such as Misconfigured or Awaiting conversions, and you can't tell whether anything is actually wrong.
These numbers feed automated bidding, so a wrong count costs more than a tidy report: Google says duplicate tags can cause inaccurate report data and problems with ad optimization.
Setting up for the first time? Start with which route fits your store. Something already looks wrong? Go straight to the not-working table, then come back for the fix it names.
Which Route Fits Your Store
Key takeaway
Google's pages call it the Google & YouTube app and Shopify's call it a sales channel; it is the same install from the Shopify App Store. Google names it the easiest way to set up conversion tracking on Shopify. Find your row, and the last column takes you to your first step.
Find your row
| Your store today | Route | First step |
|---|---|---|
| No Google tags yet, one Google Ads account, and your login is an administrator on it | Google & YouTube channel, with the account connected | Set up the channel |
| Google tags in theme code, checkout scripts or a custom pixel | The same channel route, then retire the old tags | See what fires today |
| Google tags in a Tag Manager container | Move them into the channel, as Google advises; other platforms' tags are a separate decision | Read Google's advice |
| Several accounts or a manager account, no admin access, or Floodlight | Still the channel: link one account or skip the link, then add conversion IDs or Google tags by hand | Add IDs inside the channel |
| Conversions already look wrong | Diagnose first; your route may already be right | Match the symptom |
Google Ads Help and Merchant Center Help pages on Shopify conversion tracking, read November 2, 2026.
Ease of setup isn't the only reason to start here. On the Google & YouTube app, Google's own guidance reads:
It's the recommended method for setting up Google tagging on Shopify, as it simplifies the process and ensures compatibility with Shopify's evolving checkout system.
What You Need Before You Connect
Key takeaway
- A Google Ads account that already exists. Shopify's connection guide requires one before you set up Google Ads through the channel.
- Administrator access. The Google account you connect must be an administrator on that Ads account. If it can't be, Google documents a route inside the channel for you.
- Merchant Center only if you want it. Shopify says you don't need to connect a Merchant Center account when you use only Google Ads and Google Analytics.
- Staff permissions. A staff member installing the channel needs Orders, Products, Marketing, Discounts, Blog posts and pages, Navigation, Manage settings, and Manage and install apps and channels.
- A budget line for ads, not for the channel. As of November 2, 2026, the App Store listing reads “Free to install. Additional charges may apply” and says ad spend is billed directly to your Google Ads account.
Check consent while you are here. Google says that if you use the app for conversion tracking and have set up a consent management platform integrated with Shopify's Customer Privacy API, consent mode should work automatically. Shopify also has a built-in cookie banner, and turning it on and choosing regions is the part to settle first.
Build Your Order of Work
The table above finds one row. This quiz crosses four questions, because what you do first depends on your access, where Google tags live today, what your campaigns bid to, and whether you import GA4 purchases. Each result links to the sections it names, so you can skip the rest; the full sequence is in the setup checklist.
What's your order of work?4 questions → your route, then the steps in the order that protects your bidding
Set Up Tracking Through Google & YouTube
Key takeaway
Google's setup page counts five steps; the first four are below, and the fifth is verifying the result. If you already set up measurement another way, Google says to install the app before you reimplement your Google tags. If old tags or live campaigns are in play, the checklist's first two steps come before all of this. If the app detects tags that may require migration, Google says you'll receive an in-app notification with details about how to migrate them.
Install the channel and connect Google Ads
Key takeaway
- In the Shopify App Store, install Google & YouTube: review the list of permissions, then select Install.
- If the channel isn't connected to Google, select Connect Google account and choose the Google account that owns your Ads account.
- Go to Sales channels > Google & YouTube. In the Just want to set up Google Ads conversion measurement? section, select Get started. Shopify's steps show a second Get started in a Google Ads section, so select that too if it appears.
- Under Connect your Google Ads account, select the account from the drop-down and select Connect. Shopify says the IDs listed are those where your Google account is an administrator.
- Sales channels
- Google & YouTube
- Sales channels
- Google & YouTube
The hint on that screen matters if your account isn't in the list: it says you can skip the connection and select Manage on the next step, which is the conversion ID route.
Channel already installed for a feed or for GA4, and no such banner? Shopify's guide gives a different entry for stores with a Merchant Center account: the Advertise your products with Google Ads banner, then an account choice under Set up your Performance Max campaign, then Connect. That guide, read November 3, 2026, doesn't describe a separate entry for a channel installed only for GA4. Google's pages add two pointers: with the app already installed you'll see a banner in your Overview page to migrate your tags, and you can connect your services on the Overview page.
Google's setup page embeds the short screencast below for setting up through the app. It runs from the Get started banner through the account connection, the event destinations and the Google tag to the channel's Settings tab. If your screen differs, follow the written steps.
Confirm what gets measured
Key takeaway
- Under Measure conversions, read the list of Shopify events and destinations.
- If you don't want to change anything, select Confirm.
- To change one, select Manage and the pencil icon next to it. Choose Create a new action in the linked account, Select from linked account or Don't measure in linked account. Select Save for that event, then Save when you are done.
- Review your events and destinations, then select Confirm.
- If asked, confirm your enhanced conversions settings. Google notes you may not need this step, depending on your account setup.
- Sales channels
- Google & YouTube
In our development store on November 3, 2026, the pending step read Measure conversions; once we skipped the account link it read Confirm conversion event settings, and the dialog Conversion measurement settings. Go by what your own screen says.
Confirm the Google tag and complete setup
- On the Confirm Google tags step, read the tag listed for each service you connected.
- If the installed tag is correct, select Confirm.
- Only if you need a tag by hand: enter the tag in the field under Manually added Google tags, use Add Google tag, then select Save.
- Select Complete setup.
- Sales channels
- Google & YouTube
The installed list reads None in that frame because our development store has no Google Ads account connected. Yours should list a tag for each connected service.
Once Ads is connected, Google puts later edits on the channel's Settings page, under Conversion event settings (another part of the same help page says Customer event settings) and Google tags.
Turn on enhanced conversions
Key takeaway
Enhanced conversions supplement your conversion data by sending hashed first-party data to Google. Google says this can improve the accuracy of your measurement and unlock more powerful bidding. If you didn't turn it on when you connected:
- In the channel, go to the Settings tab. The screencast earlier in this guide ends on this tab.
- Under Google Ads settings, find Enhanced conversions and select Turn on.
- Review and agree to the customer data terms.
Google describes this as something you turn on, so check the setting rather than assume it is already active. The search note below records what we checked on the Shopify side.
What Does the Google & YouTube Channel Create?
Key takeaway
When you link your Ads account through the channel, Google says a purchase conversion action is created automatically and set as the account default, and the rest are created as secondary actions for observation only.
The seven conversion actions on Google's list
| Conversion action | Role | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Primary by default | Every time a user completes the purchase |
| Add to cart | Secondary | Every time a user adds a product to the cart |
| Begin checkout | Secondary | Every time a user begins the checkout process |
| Page view | Secondary | Every time a user opens a new page |
| View item | Secondary | Every time a user opens a product page |
| Search | Secondary | Every time a user uses the search option on the website |
| Add payment info | Secondary | Every time a user adds payment information during the checkout process |
Google Merchant Center Help, Understand the conversion actions tracked in Google Ads, read November 2, 2026.
The difference is practical. Primary actions are reported in the Conversions column and used for bidding, as long as the standard goal they belong to is used for bidding. Secondary actions are for observation, with one exception: a secondary action inside a custom goal is used for bidding.
Google's pages disagree on the defaults. The conversion-actions page above says purchase is the account default and the rest are secondary. Google's setup page, also read November 2, 2026, says purchase, add to cart and checkout started are “the suggested default in Google Ads, and set as the account default.”
Go by your own account: look at which actions it marks as Primary, and if a non-purchase action is Primary with a value, fix that first.
Telling the channel's action from an older or imported one is easier from the channel's side. Its Conversion event settings list which destination each Shopify event feeds; compare that name with the list under Summary, in the Conversions drop-down of the Google Ads Goals menu. Any other purchase action there needs an explanation. The two screens come from Google's written steps and comparing them is our suggestion: with no account connected in our development store, we didn't see a populated list ourselves.
The value the channel sends for a purchase is the subtotal minus discounts, without shipping or taxes; the worked example shows why that won't match your order total.
Conversion IDs Inside the Channel, Tags Outside It
People say “manual tag” for both, and they carry opposite advice. The first part below is a documented part of the channel. The other two are what Google tells you to move away from.
Several accounts, no admin access or Floodlight
Key takeaway
- At the connection step, select Skip account connection. Google's page then has you select Yes, skip.
- Select Manage and the pencil icon next to the Shopify event you want to send, then check the box Add custom conversion ID/label.
- Enter the AW-CONVERSION_ID/CONVERSION_LABEL string found in your event snippet. Floodlight takes its own DC- string.
- Select Save for each event, Save when you finish, review the list, then select Confirm.
- On the Google tags step, use Add Google tag for any extra tag, select Save, then Confirm and Complete setup.
- Sales channels
- Google & YouTube
In our development store on November 3, 2026, with no Google Ads account connected, the field was labelled Custom conversion ID/label. Follow what your own screen shows. Google's Google tag page adds that tags starting with AW- are generally associated with Google Ads accounts.
Google tags in Tag Manager
Google puts the limit down to Shopify platform restrictions: Tag Manager is not able to be set up through the Google & YouTube app. Its advice for a store with Google tags in a container is direct:
You should move your Google tags out of their Tag Manager containers running on Shopify sites and instead configure measurement for those Google products directly in the Google & YouTube app.
Shopify recommends the app for stores replacing a Tag Manager script on the Thank you page, because Google maintains it; Shopify's guide gives a store that already runs a Tag Manager custom pixel a different instruction: update that pixel, an option Shopify says Google doesn't recommend. Whether the container still earns its place for other platforms' tags is the question our Google Tag Manager guide answers first. For those third-party tags, Google recommends working with the respective tag providers. If Tag Manager stays in your setup, Google's check is to confirm that the Conversion Linker tag is set up correctly.
Why not paste the tag into a custom pixel
A gtag snippet in Settings > Customer events looks like a shortcut, since a custom pixel can subscribe to checkout events. What a custom pixel can and can't reach is a Shopify question; whether Google stands behind its tags there is answered plainly:
Running Google tags inside Shopify’s custom pixel feature is not a supported implementation.
For Google Ads, Google lists these among the features that may not work correctly from that sandbox:
- Enhanced conversions
- Setting up conversions with a URL
- Conversion verification and troubleshooting
- Phone call conversions
- Cross-domain measurement
- Consent mode URL passthrough
Shopify's position matches: adding and using custom pixels is unsupported by Shopify, though it says you can run Google Tag Manager as a custom pixel. Google says running Tag Manager inside that sandbox is not a supported implementation.
Testing is harder as well. Shopify says Tag Assistant's Troubleshoot tag feature doesn't detect Google tags in a custom pixel, and points to the Shopify Pixel Helper for checking that pixel events load. If campaigns already bid to such a pixel, switch them first.
Why Purchases Get Counted Twice
Key takeaway
Google names two causes on its page for stores using the channel:
A single user action on your ad or free listing can be counted more than once if you have multiple Google tags set up, or if you had already set up conversion tracking before installing the Google & YouTube app.
Only primary actions land in the Conversions column and feed bidding, so a duplicate reaching a primary action changes the number your bidding reads. In our illustration, one purchase worth $120 would show as two conversions and $240 of value. Work through the next four parts in order: the bidding step comes before any tag comes off. Channel not connected yet? Set it up first, because that step needs its Purchase action.
How to see a duplicate in Tag Assistant
Key takeaway
- Disable any ad blockers or other browser extensions.
- Open Tag Assistant at tagassistant.google.com. Google also recommends installing its free Chrome extension to enable extra features. The first time, click Add Domain, enter your store's URL and click Connect. After that, find your site in the list and click the arrow icon.
- In the tab Tag Assistant opened on your store, complete the action you are checking. Then click Finish in the pop-up and, back in the Tag Assistant window, click Continue.
- Click a Google tag to open its Summary, then click the Hits sent tab.
- Read the boxes. Each is labelled Google Analytics or Google Ads. Google says that if you only have Google Analytics boxes, your site isn't tracking Ads conversions.
This check has limits. If the pop-up doesn't appear at all, Google's duplicate-tracking page says you don't have a Google tag installed on your site, and Google's Tag Assistant help also lists ad blockers, consent tools and iframes among connection problems. Tags inside a custom pixel won't show under Troubleshoot tag, so a clean result doesn't clear them; look under Settings > Customer events as well.
Shopify's own check is browser developer tools: look for multiple requests to the same analytics endpoint during a single page load or event.
One pattern has no official explanation we could find. Merchants have reported two identical Purchase tags from the channel itself for one purchase (forum thread, August 2025), and double conversions with the channel linked (forum thread, May 2025), with no confirmed cause in either. The pages we read don't say whether two hits like that are normal, so don't judge by the hit count alone: place one order from a real ad click and check whether it reaches Google Ads as one conversion or two.
A GA4 purchase imported beside the channel's Purchase: Google's page on conversions based on Analytics key events gives the general rule. We also read Google Ads and Merchant Center help on Shopify conversion tracking, duplicates, statuses and imports, and Shopify Help Center pages on the channel, pixels and pixel migration, on November 2 and 3, 2026. None of these says which of this pair to keep primary.
Two Purchase hits from the channel for one order: the same pages plus Google's Data Manager page for Shopify, read November 2 and 3, 2026.
Enhanced conversions in the channel: Shopify Help Center pages on the channel and pixels, the channel's App Store listing and shopify.com/google, read November 2, 2026.
None of these names those exact points; that absence is the finding. Google does cover enhanced conversions on its own help pages.
Switch bidding before you remove anything
Key takeaway
Google's last setup step runs in this order: check that new campaigns are bidding to the new conversion action and set it as primary, then set up the channel's conversion as primary and remove legacy tags. For a store bidding to custom pixel conversions, it says to switch the conversion action to the one the channel measures.
If campaigns are live, doubled or not, do this before you touch any tag:
- In Google Ads, open Summary under Conversions in the Goals menu, and find the goal holding the action your campaigns bid to.
- Check for a non-purchase action, such as Page view or Add to cart, set to Primary with a value. Google says to switch it to Secondary or remove its value to prevent double-counting.
- Click Edit goal. Under Conversion action optimization, select Primary for the channel's Purchase, then Save.
- Set the older purchase action to Secondary (observe only) the same way. This is our reading of Google's rule that secondary actions don't drive bidding, and it doesn't hold if a custom goal includes that action.
- Only now remove the old tag, and only the duplicated events. Google warns that disabling other conversion events can decrease tracking accuracy.
Do it in one sitting. Google says Smart Bidding strategies need a standard 7–14 day learning phase, and that frequent manual changes to conversion goals during it reset the window.
Where Shopify gives both orders, both stand. For additional scripts being replaced with a pixel on a page not yet upgraded, its upgrade page says duplicate events are tracked while both run, and that you can deactivate the script first to prevent them. Its page on replacing a Tag Manager script has you deactivate once the pixels are confirmed working.
Its migration guide gives the same choice for a new custom pixel: connect first to minimize missed events, or remove the old pixel first to avoid duplicates. Neither changes where bidding sits while you do it.
The four places Google names, and how to clear each
Key takeaway
Google's removal page says it is crucial to remove previously installed duplicate tags once your store has migrated to the channel. If Customer events is unavailable to you, that is a permissions question: why Customer events can be greyed out.
Where to look and what to do
| Place | How to find it | How to clear it | Google's note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom pixel | Settings > Customer events | Open the actions menu on the pixel's row and click Disconnect. To remove it entirely, click Delete and confirm. | If campaigns bid to this pixel's conversions, Google says to switch their conversion action to the one the channel measures. |
| Checkout additional scripts | Settings > Checkout, Additional scripts section. It doesn't expand, so paste long code into a text editor to find the script. | Click Disable script, then check that your Google tags still receive events. Shopify's own steps put Disable script on the Upgrade guide page. | If your Thank you page is already upgraded, these scripts should have stopped working automatically and need no manual removal. |
| checkout.liquid (Shopify Plus) | Online Store > Themes, three-dot icon, Edit code, then Layout > checkout.liquid | Duplicate the theme, delete the Google snippets, Save, then run a test purchase. | The same upgraded-page note applies: no manual removal is needed. |
| theme.liquid | Online Store > Themes, three-dot icon, Edit code, then Layout > theme.liquid. Tags typically sit in the head section. Search for gtag, UA-, AW-, GTM-, google-analytics.com, googletagmanager.com and googleadservices.com. | Duplicate the theme, delete the Google snippets, then Save. | The upgraded-page note doesn't cover this file. Afterwards, tags should fire only from the channel. |
Google Merchant Center Help, Remove duplicate tags after migrating to the Google & YouTube app, read November 2 and 3, 2026.
The second row may not exist for you. Non-Plus stores had until August 26, 2026 to upgrade their Thank you and Order status pages, and Shopify says stores not upgraded by then were upgraded automatically.
- Settings
- Customer events
- Online Store
- Themes
- Online Store
- Themes
- Edit code
Shopify's pixel migration page names leftover code in Additional scripts and checkout.liquid as a cause of duplicates. If your Settings > Checkout screen lists a script that duplicates a Google tag and your Thank you page isn't upgraded yet, disable that script.
Duplicate the theme first, so you can revert if anything goes wrong. Google warns against deleting Liquid objects or tags that are part of Shopify's core functionality, such as {{ content_for_header }}, {{ content_for_layout }} and {{ page_title }}.
Old Add to cart and Begin checkout tags go the same way. Google's look-for list isn't limited to purchases: it covers any script containing gtag('event'…). The channel creates its own Add to cart and Begin checkout actions as secondary, so an old snippet for the same event can be a duplicate once the channel measures it. Check first that no campaign still depends on the older action, then remove only those events.
Google's list also includes Tag Manager snippets in both Liquid files, which is the Tag Manager decision above in another form. Shopify's own wording is wider than the four places: the same event can be tracked in more than one place, such as your theme code, an app, or Customer events. So after you clear the four, recheck for an app sending its own tag.
A GA4 purchase imported beside the channel's Purchase
Key takeaway
Google's import page says you can use any combination of imported Analytics conversions and Google Ads conversion measurement at the same time. Shopify's GA4 migration guide includes an import step for stores that once tracked Ads conversions through Universal Analytics, with no warning about duplicates. Google's Shopify tag page does tell you to check how to avoid duplicating tracking events if you plan to use Analytics for conversions.
Google states the principle, not this pair. Its page on conversions based on Analytics key events says they are set as secondary “to prevent counting the same event twice for bidding.” The next step is our reading: the Conversions column shows only actions set as Primary, so if an imported purchase is switched to Primary beside the channel's Purchase, one order can reach that column twice. A transaction ID doesn't obviously rescue this, because Google's duplicate rule speaks of two conversions for the same conversion action, and these are two actions.
The practical move: keep one purchase action Primary and leave the other Secondary, where it still reports under All conversions. The pages we read don't say which to keep. We'd keep the channel's, because it is the route Google recommends. Connecting GA4 itself is a separate job, covered in how to add GA4 to Shopify.
How to Check That Conversions Are Recording
Key takeaway
Google says you can view conversion action statuses in the Summary section of the Conversions page, and that if your conversion action table shows Unverified, Tag inactive or Needs attention, you can use Tag Assistant to verify the action.
What each status means
Key takeaway
Status, meaning and your move
| Status | What Google says it means | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Shown in green; everything is working as intended | Nothing to fix |
| Needs attention | Shown in yellow; there are action items, but conversions haven't stopped recording entirely | Hover over the status for Google's next steps; Tag Assistant can verify the action |
| Misconfigured | Conversions have stopped recording entirely because of a setup error or broken tag | Hover over the status for Google's steps, check the conversion ID and label on Shopify, then verify the tag in Tag Assistant |
| Awaiting conversions | None recorded in the last 7 days; typically the action was created under 48 hours ago, campaigns are paused, or traffic is too low | Wait, or check campaigns and traffic. Ads running and still here? We'd verify the tag in Tag Assistant; Misconfigured means recording stopped because of a setup error or broken tag |
| Removed | The action was manually deleted or archived and no longer tracks data | A problem only if you meant to keep tracking it |
| Unverified (on other Google pages) | The tag for this action hasn't fired yet; with many conversions an hour, expect an update within 10 minutes | Verify the action in Tag Assistant |
| Tag inactive or No recent conversions (on other Google pages) | No conversions attributed to ad clicks in the last 7–14 days | Verify in Tag Assistant; the cause isn't necessarily the tag |
| Recording (on other Google pages) | The page does receive conversions | Nothing to fix |
Google Ads Help, Troubleshooting conversion tracking status, The Unverified status has been showing for more than 24 hours and Use Tag Assistant to troubleshoot your unverified or inactive conversion actions, read November 2, 2026.
Two Google pages give different windows for Tag inactive. The second page linked under the table says 7–14 days; another page, read the same day, says Google no longer sees your tag and has recorded no conversions in the last 7 days. Don't wait for either number to settle it: verify the action in Tag Assistant, which tells you whether the tag fires.
Run a test that can actually show up
Key takeaway
A direct order on your own store is the obvious test, and Google is specific about why it can mislead you:
Test conversions performed using Google Tag Manager preview mode, or by directly navigating to your conversion page without an ad click, may not reflect in Google Ads.
- In Tag Assistant, start from a landing page or your home page rather than the conversion page URL.
- Complete the conversion and finish the session. Actions verified there update in Google Ads after approximately 30 minutes.
- For the end-to-end check, click a real ad and complete a conversion. Google says the conversion will appear within the next few hours. It also says you'll be charged for the click, which is why it prefers Tag Assistant or waiting for a conversion from an ad click.
- Check that new campaigns are bidding to the new conversion action.
Google's timings depend on what just happened:
Google's timings, by what just happened
| What just happened | Google's timing | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| You verified actions in a Tag Assistant session | After approximately 30 minutes | Only the actions verified in that session; Google says they appear as No recent conversions until the page receives conversions |
| You completed a test from a real ad click | Within the next few hours | A test with no ad click may not appear at all |
| You made significant changes or linked accounts | Up to 7 days to appear fully in reports | Reports, not tag firing |
| A conversion imported from Analytics | Up to 24 hours after it occurred; allow 24–48 hours before comparing the two tools | Imported actions only |

The Setup Checklist
Key takeaway
The first two steps change nothing, and they are what make the rest safe. Step six comes before step seven on every route. If you are adding conversion IDs by hand, step four is where you skip the connection; the others stay the same.
Google Ads conversion tracking setupTick each step off as you move between Shopify, the channel and Google Ads.
Google Ads conversion tracking setup
Tick each step off as you move between Shopify, the channel and Google Ads.
Record every Google tag already on the store before you change anything.
Before you tick this off
- Ran Tag Assistant and noted the Google Ads and Google Analytics boxes
- Looked for custom pixels under Settings > Customer events
- Searched theme.liquid for gtag, AW- and GTM-
Write down which conversion action your campaigns rely on, so nothing loses its signal later.
Before you tick this off
- Opened Summary under Conversions in the Google Ads Goals menu
- Noted which actions are set to Primary
- Noted any purchase action imported from Google Analytics
Install Google & YouTube from the Shopify App Store and connect the Google account with administrator access to your Ads account.
Before you tick this off
- Reviewed the permissions and installed the channel
- Connected the right Google account
Select Get started in the conversion measurement banner, then connect one account or skip the connection.
Before you tick this off
- My login is an administrator on the account I connect
- If I skip, I have each AW- conversion ID and label ready
Confirm the Shopify events and destinations, confirm the Google tag, then select Complete setup.
Before you tick this off
- Reviewed the events and destinations
- The Google tag listed is correct
- Selected Complete setup
Make the channel's Purchase action primary and move bidding to it before you remove an older tag.
Before you tick this off
- The channel's Purchase is set to Primary
- New campaigns bid to that action
- Only one purchase action stays Primary
Clear only the duplicated tags from custom pixels, additional scripts, checkout.liquid and theme.liquid.
Before you tick this off
- Duplicated the theme before editing code
- Removed only what the channel now measures
- Saved the file and checked that events still arrive
Complete a conversion from a real ad click, then read the action's status in Google Ads.
Before you tick this off
- The test started from an ad click, not a direct visit
- Allowed a few hours for it to appear
- Read the status against the table on this page
- One order shows as one conversion
Google Ads Conversion Tracking Not Working on Shopify
Key takeaway
If you can see the action in Google Ads, start with what its status means, using Google's own definitions. The table below starts from what you are seeing instead.
What you see, and what to do
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One order shows as two conversions | A second tag sends the same event, or, by our reading, two primary purchase actions both count | Find the duplicate in Tag Assistant |
| Real orders in Shopify, but no purchases in Google Ads | Tag Assistant shows only Google Analytics boxes, which Google says means the site isn't tracking Google Ads conversions | Check the hits in Tag Assistant |
| Google Ads and Shopify totals differ | Different dates, reporting windows and value rules | Rule out the documented differences |
| You placed your own order and nothing appears in Google Ads | The order had no ad click, or ran in Tag Manager preview | Test from a real ad click |
| Conversions appear in the Goals summary but not in the campaign dashboard | Action optimization settings | Set the action to Primary and include it in the campaign's Marketing Objective |
| Conversion values look too high | A non-purchase action such as Page view or Add to cart is Primary with a value, or a purchase is being counted twice | Check the primary actions |
| You can't reach the channel's settings to change anything | Setup never reached Complete setup | Finish the last step |
| You entered conversion IDs by hand and nothing records | The conversion ID or label on Shopify is wrong | Re-check the AW- string |
| Events fell after replacing additional scripts with pixels | Pixels only track with consent; on a custom domain, pixels and cookie consent also won't work on the Order status page unless the customer account domain is a subdomain of the store's | Check your consent setup and your customer account domain |
| Tag Assistant shows nothing for tags in a custom pixel | Its Troubleshoot tag feature doesn't detect Google tags in a custom pixel | Use the Shopify Pixel Helper |
| Conversion tracking in the channel was switched off | Someone selected Remove in the Conversion tracking box, which stops tracking for ads and free listings | In the channel's Settings tab, find Conversion tracking and select Start |
Google Ads Help, Merchant Center Help and Shopify Help Center, including Shopify's additional scripts page, read November 2 and 3, 2026.
Where to take it next. Shopify says that for issues related to Google Ads, account suspensions or ad approvals, you need to contact Google directly. Google's check for third-party platforms such as Shopify is that they have the correct Google conversion ID and label integrated, and for inactive tags, to verify the setup in Tag Assistant.
Why Google Ads and Shopify Show Different Numbers
Key takeaway
Before you treat a gap as a tracking fault, rule out the differences Google documents:
- Which date a conversion lands on. Google's discrepancy page says Google Ads reports conversions on the ad impression date, while other reporting tools use the conversion date. Its import page puts it as the date and time of the click.
- How long a conversion can still arrive. Conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click, so recent days can still move.
- Cookie windows, if you also compare GA4. Google Ads cookies expire 90 days after a click, while Analytics uses a cookie lasting up to 2 years.
For closer alignment, Google suggests adding the Conversions (by conv. time) or All conv. (by conv. time) columns to your reports. How Shopify credits campaigns in its own reports is a separate question, covered in our guide to Shopify's Marketing reports.
What the purchase value counts
Key takeaway
Google's event reference says that, starting April 24, 2025, purchase values reported by Google tags loaded through the channel take discounts into account, and that the value doesn't include shipping charges and taxes.
Here is what that does to one order, using amounts we made up for illustration rather than figures from Google or Shopify. A customer buys $140 of products with a $20 discount, pays $9 shipping and $6 tax. Google Ads receives a value of $120 ($140 − $20). Shopify shows an order total of $135 ($120 + $9 + $6). Those two numbers are both correct.
If that same purchase were counted twice, Google Ads would show two conversions and $240 ($120 × 2), which no shipping or tax difference explains.
The Bottom Line
Key takeaway
The risk here sits mostly in the order of the work. Cleaning up what was already running is where a store can pull a tag its bidding still relies on, or leave two tags reporting one purchase.
