How does guaranteed flat-rate shipping work?

Since October 24, 2026, Managed Markets can set Standard and Express rates for each destination. Your customer pays a flat rate at checkout, and the rest of the shipping cost is included in your product prices.

Your own flat or carrier-calculated rates stay active and are offered when flat rates from Managed Markets aren't available for an order.

Which markets can use it, and how do you turn it on?

A market qualifies only when all three hold:

  • Your store is on Managed Markets: Basic plan or higher, an online store and Shopify Payments; continental US businesses and certain stores in Canada and the UK.
  • Duties and taxes are included in its prices; turn them off and flat rates switch off too.
  • Your store doesn't use shipping options by market.

Turn flat rates on per market, and off at any time, with Offer affordable flat rates by including some cost in product prices under Shipping.

The toggle also has you absorb a set amount of the shipping cost on orders above a minimum. The amount follows your store's country and can't be changed, but you can turn absorbing off per market.

When is the label cost guaranteed?

The guarantee rides on the label you buy:

The rate is guaranteed when you buy the prepaid label for the order. The cost of shipping is then fixed when your customer places the order, and you're not billed the difference when the order costs more to ship.

It covers qualifying prepaid FedEx or DHL Express labels bought through Managed Markets. Buy a different label and the guarantee doesn't apply: you pay for it as usual, and the shipping amount collected is refunded to you. Merchant-of-record benefits also hinge on a Managed Markets label.

Keep flat rates on
  • Rates set for you; you can't edit them
  • No bill for later carrier cost adjustments on qualifying labels
  • You absorb a set shipping amount on orders above a minimum, unless you turn that off
