Do you need a paid Shopify plan to sell in multiple languages?

Published September 12, 2026·Last verified September 12, 2026·
At a glance
Short answer
Yes — selling in more than one language needs Basic or higher; Lite and Starter, two of the tiers below it, are closed to new stores anyway.
Lite and Starter
Both closed to new stores; an existing Lite store has no online store to translate.
Languages per plan
Up to 20 languages on Basic, Grow, Shopify or Advanced; up to 30 on Plus and Enterprise Commerce.
Two lines, two scopes
"All plans except the Lite plan" covers localization overall; "Basic plan or higher" is the sell-in-multiple-languages requirement.
Translate & Adapt
Free; auto-translates up to two languages, manual translations unlimited within the store ceiling.
As of
Shopify Help Center localization, Basic, Lite and Starter plan pages plus the Translate & Adapt listing, read September 12, 2026.

Which Shopify plan lets you sell in more than one language?

Basic or higher. Shopify lists the plan among the requirements it introduces with "To sell in multiple languages":

Your store is on the Basic plan or higher.
Shopify — Shopify Help Center — Localization and translation (requirements to sell in multiple languages) ·

The ceiling by plan: up to 20 languages from a single store on the Basic, Grow, Shopify, or Advanced plan, and up to 30 languages on the Shopify Plus plan and Shopify Enterprise Commerce plan.

The same page also says "Available on all plans except the Lite plan." — under the wider heading "Requirements for localizing and translating your store", not under the selling list, so the two lines measure different things.

Are the Lite and Starter plans still open to new stores?

No. Lite is closed: its help page says "The Lite plan isn't available to new stores", and that Lite is for selling without maintaining an online store — so an existing Lite store has no online store to translate.

Starter is closed the same way — its help page states the Starter plan isn't available to new stores, as of September 12, 2026.

Do you need a paid app on top of the Shopify plan?

No. Translate & Adapt is Shopify's own app, listed as Free; it lets you "auto-translate up to two languages for free, and manually add as many translations as you wish". That two-language cap is on automatic translation only; 20 or 30 is the plan's ceiling, not the app's.

The requirements list also asks for a compatible theme, a language selector, and Translate & Adapt or a compatible third-party translation app — or translations imported directly into Shopify. How far Translate & Adapt reaches past two auto-translated languages is covered in how many languages you actually get.
