Can you use a third-party TSE instead of Shopify's TSE app with Shopify POS?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Yes: OpenFiskal offers a third-party cloud TSE app for Shopify POS; the Shopify pages we read document no hardware TSE.
What the law asks
A certified TSE connected to your registers; Shopify's app "can" help, per its help page.
Shopify's own app
$9 USD per store location a month on top of POS; its cloud storage comes from Fiskaly.
OpenFiskal price
€19.99 per register a month, or €14.99 per register a month billed annually — listing read September 30, 2026.
POS plan
OpenFiskal's migration guide requires POS Pro; its pricing page lists both POS Lite and POS Pro.
Before you switch
Keep Shopify's TSE app installed until its export arrives, OpenFiskal's guide says.

Does Shopify POS work with a TSE other than Shopify's app?

One third-party option is OpenFiskal. Its App Store listing calls it "the fiscalization platform for Shopify POS merchants in Germany, Austria and Switzerland".

Under KassenSichV, merchants "are required to connect electronic cash registers to a technical security system (TSE)", says Shopify's TSE compliance page, and §146a of the German Fiscal Code requires that TSE to be certified. Shopify's own app is one route: you "can use" it "to help comply", and its cloud storage comes from Fiskaly, "a third-party compliance service provider".

The Shopify pages we read on September 30, 2026 — TSE compliance, Germany tax compliance and POS country requirements — neither call that app required nor name a TSE provider other than Fiskaly.

Can you connect a hardware TSE to Shopify POS?

The Shopify help pages we read on September 30, 2026 — supported hardware, receipt printers, USB support on Android and the POS overview — describe no USB or SD TSE.

OpenFiskal's pricing page offers a "BSI-certified cloud TSE", and the OpenFiskal pages we read the same day don't mention a hardware one. If you already own a hardware TSE, ask its vendor whether it works with Shopify POS.

What changes if you switch from Shopify's TSE app?

Shopify's app costs $9 USD per store location a month, on top of your POS subscription — see how it counts locations and registers. OpenFiskal charges €19.99 per register a month paid monthly, or €14.99 per register a month paid annually, on its App Store listing, read September 30, 2026.

OpenFiskal's migration guide says "POS Pro is required for using the OpenFiskal TSE," but OpenFiskal's pricing page lists both POS Lite and POS Pro, and its FAQ says a location that prints receipts or uses the cash register book needs POS Pro to be fully TSE and KassenSichV compliant.

The same guide says not to uninstall Shopify's TSE app until you've received its export. The guide also lists two ELSTER steps: deregistering your cash register, and registering your cash registers and TSEs. See whether a TSE change must be reported.

Does Shopify POS meet fiscal cash register rules?

Not by itself: Shopify names routes for Germany, France, Spain and Italy, and says POS isn't certified for some Danish, Belgian or Quebec firms.

Does the Shopify TSE app file your German cash register declaration for you?

No — the TSE app generates an XML export of your declaration; submitting that file to the German tax authorities is your step.

Where do you find the TSE serial number for Shopify POS in Germany?

Shopify refers you to Fiskaly, whose guide names the TSE view of its dashboard; ELSTER's serial field needs all 64 hex characters, not the BSI ID.
