Can you ship lithium batteries with Shopify Shipping?

Can you buy a Shopify Shipping label for a lithium battery?

No. Shopify Shipping is the label you buy inside your admin at Shopify's negotiated rates, and a parcel holding a lithium battery sits outside what it will sell you. The question most merchants ask first — whether the carrier would move the parcel — is a different question with a different answer.

The USPS lane states the gap between those two answers outright. It concedes that USPS itself moves some hazardous materials under its own rules, and then bans those same shipments from the Shopify channel.

Read that as an instruction rather than a warning: it names where the label has to come from, which makes this a decision about your fulfilment channel and not about your packaging. If your block is about the account or the order instead of the product, the symptoms in the admin are different, and what your admin shows when a label is blocked separates those cases.

Is there a carrier lane where batteries are allowed?

Not one we could find. The plainest wording sits on three of them: the FedEx lane lists products containing lithium ion batteries beside tobacco, firearms and dry ice; the UPS lane for Canada names lithium batteries among the regulated products you cannot ship; and the USPS lane bans HAZMAT as a whole without naming batteries at all.

Of the twenty-four lane pages we read, twenty-two carry no mention of a battery at all, and that silence is not permission. The dedicated dangerous goods page counts a laptop with a lithium battery as an example of the category, and the DHL Europe lane says dangerous goods and hazardous materials are not supported, naming no chemistry at all.

Across every Shopify Shipping carrier lane page, that dedicated dangerous goods page and the Managed Markets prohibited-items list, all read on August 31, 2026, we found no lane publishing an exception for lithium batteries — one full-text pass over those pages, not a second line-by-line re-read.

Does it matter if the battery is inside the device?

Not to Shopify. No Shopify page we read on August 31, 2026 uses UN3480 or UN3481, and none of them treats a battery installed in a device differently from a loose one; the surfaces read were the dedicated dangerous goods page, all twenty-four carrier lane pages and the Managed Markets prohibited-items list.

Your carrier does draw that line. USPS puts it in Publication 52.

Batteries sent without their equipment travel under a narrower rule in the same document — surface transportation only, unless something excepts them. What that distinction does not do is reopen the Shopify channel. A parcel USPS would accept by air because the battery is installed in the device is still a parcel Shopify will not sell you a label for.

What to use instead, and the cross-border layer

Shopify names the route on the USPS lane itself: such shipments must be shipped through USPS directly. In practice that is one of two things — an account with the carrier, worked through the carrier's own label tools, or a shipping label app from the Shopify App Store that connects that account back to your orders.

Both routes cost you something inside the admin, and what each of them breaks in your workflow is worth reading before you commit, because fulfilment and tracking stop being one click.

Selling across borders adds a second, independent limit. Managed Markets treats batteries, electronics and items that have batteries attached or plug directly into the electrical current as a restricted category, and publishes that restriction with no country qualifier.

Shopify lists batteries and electronics among the categories it calls prohibited, and words the entry itself as restricted. Both consequences it documents land before the carrier does: a product its review marks unsupported in a region cannot be displayed to customers in that market, and a shipment containing restricted items might be deemed undeliverable. Neither is the same question as where the label comes from.
