Can you hide sold-out variants on Shopify?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Yes, by unpublishing the variant from each channel; Horizon keeps options shoppers can't buy visible, and Flow can automate the unpublishing
Where
Product's Variants section → Publishing column → Manage publishing → untick channels or catalogs
Last variant
The product stays hidden on that channel until you republish at least one variant
Horizon
Sold-out options stay visible: crossed out as buttons or swatches, Unavailable in plain dropdowns. We found no Horizon hide setting
Automation
Flow: Variant out of stock + Unpublish product variant; needs Inventory tracked; variants already at zero won't trigger it
Trap
Flow's template for single or all out-of-stock variants hides the whole product, not the variant

How do you unpublish a single variant?

Open the product and, in its Variants section, click All or the icons in the variant's Publishing column.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Products
  2. The product
  3. Variants
  4. Publishing

In the Manage publishing dialog, untick the channels or catalogs, then click Done and Save.

Shopify then hides that variant there. It stays in your admin, where the product's admin page shows Excludes some variants.

Unpublish every variant from a channel and the product itself is hidden there until you republish at least one.

What does Horizon show for a sold-out variant?

If you leave the variant published, the theme decides. In Horizon's variant picker (code as of October 13, 2026), an option value with no purchasable combination stays visible:

  • in the buttons style, and wherever swatches show, crossed out and announced as “Sold out” to screen readers;
  • in the dropdown style, unless the option shows swatches, labelled Unavailable.

In the Horizon code and Help Center theme pages we read on October 18, 2026, we found no setting that removes such options. On another theme, check its editor.

What counts as sold out: Shopify's out of stock means tracked inventory at zero or below, and by default customers can't buy that variant; Continue selling when out of stock lets customers buy anyway, so decide whether to keep selling at zero.

Can Shopify Flow hide a variant when it sells out?

Yes. Flow's Unpublish product variant action removes a variant, by default the triggering one, from the publications you choose. Shopify most commonly pairs it with Variant out of stock; to bring it back, pair Variant back in stock with Publish product variant.

The trigger needs Inventory tracked and starts when stock drops from 1 or more to 0 or less, so variants already at zero don't start it. The Flow help pages we read on October 18, 2026 name no ready-made template for this.

Flow's template for single or all out-of-stock variants hides the whole product instead, so skip it here; that's the job of hiding out-of-stock products.
