Can two Shopify variants share the same barcode?

Short answer
Yes — no Shopify page we read describes the admin blocking a shared barcode at save time; the clash surfaces later, in the scanner and SFN transfers.
In the admin
No page we read describes the product editor rejecting a duplicate at save time; the Admin API went unchecked.
Shopify's advice (not a block)
"Print unique barcodes for each product variant, so each variant can be identified within the supply chain."
Inventory scanner (Shopify mobile app)
A shared code returns "The barcode is assigned to multiple products" instead of one item.
Shopify Fulfillment Network
SFN forbids it, and asks you to verify uniqueness yourself before an outbound transfer.
Different field
A transfer's shipment barcode is not the variant barcode; it must be unique within your store.

Does Shopify block a duplicate barcode when you save?

No page we read describes the product editor rejecting a duplicate barcode at save time, and Shopify's Admin API was not part of the check. A shared barcode can reach a live catalogue: Shopify's Retail Barcode Labels app assigns the last 8 digits of the variant ID as the barcode. "Although rare, this means two products can sometimes receive the same barcode if their variant IDs share the same last 8 digits."

What Shopify does publish is advice: "Print unique barcodes for each product variant, so each variant can be identified within the supply chain." That is guidance for printing labels, not a stated block in the admin.

Where does a shared barcode actually break?

Scanning is the first place. The Inventory scanner — a Shopify mobile app feature, not the desktop product editor — answers a shared code with "The barcode is assigned to multiple products. Tap View items to either adjust the inventory manually or assign a different barcode to a product." The scanner reports multiple matching products rather than resolving to one item. That "View items" link is where an existing duplicate gets reassigned.

Shopify Fulfillment Network is the second. For merchants connected to SFN: "Before you create an outbound transfer of inventory, verify that each product variant has a unique barcode. You can't use the same barcode for different variants." That verification sits before an outbound transfer, not at save time.

Should you give every variant its own barcode?

Give every variant its own barcode. Shopify's label app generates codes free, but they are "not suitable for Google Shopping" — third-party channels need codes bought from GS1. Sharing a code defers the problem to the scanner, and to the uniqueness check Shopify requires before an outbound Fulfillment Network transfer.

One field is easy to confuse with this one. A transfer's shipment barcode identifies the shipment during receiving, not the product: "Each shipment barcode must be unique within your store." Marketplaces can add their own requirement for a unique product identifier — their rule, not Shopify's.
