Can Shopify run a restaurant group with more than one location?

Short answer
Yes — venues are locations in one Shopify store, but POS Pro bills per location and no POS page we found covers table service.
Location cap
10 active locations on Basic, Grow and Advanced; 200 on Plus. Deactivated locations don't count.
Two prices for a yearly term
Shopify's POS pricing page and its yearly page differ; budget the higher figure unless you commit twelve months.
Plus inclusion has a condition
First 20 POS Pro locations included on Plus; the waiver to 200 applies where Shopify Payments is primary provider.
What varies by venue
Availability is set per location; B2B catalogs price companies and company locations, not retail venues.
Service gaps
No Shopify POS page we found covers table service, kitchen displays or split bills — a restaurant till takes over.

Can one Shopify store run every venue?

In Shopify's model a venue is a location: a group is one store holding several. The locations page states the ceiling: "Each Shopify subscription plan has the following active location limits: Starter: 2 locations. Basic: 10 locations. Grow: 10 locations. Advanced: 10 locations. Shopify Plus: 200 locations." Only live venues count — "Locations that you deactivate don't count toward your location limit."

Shopify's POS Pro yearly page adds a retail-side note in its free-terminal FAQ: "Note that on plans below Plus, you may have up to 10 retail locations." That page counts retail locations; it is not the per-plan active-location list above. For two to five restaurants neither cap is the constraint.

So is a second venue another location, or a second store? Expansion stores are the other mechanism, available only on Shopify Plus, and the help pages call them separate: "Store settings, products, collections, and inventory aren't synced between stores." That choice is worked through in our multi-location guide.

Can each venue have its own menu and prices?

Menus differ by activation. Shopify documents inventory as location-aware — "A product is only sellable and fulfillable from locations where it's active" — and names the case itself: "Keep specialty items at specific locations." A dish only the second kitchen makes stays inactive at the first.

Prices run on a different mechanism, aimed at a different customer. Shopify's price lists page describes catalogs as a B2B tool: "You set prices and product availability by assigning the appropriate catalogs to companies and company locations." Those companies are wholesale buyers, not your dining rooms — so the lever the documentation gives you per venue is which dishes are active there.

What does a second or third till cost?

POS Pro is bought location by location, not once for the group: Shopify's POS pricing page puts it at $89 USD per month for each retail location, on top of the plan you already run. Which counters need Pro is a decision taken venue by venue.

The word "yearly" is where Shopify's own pages disagree. Its POS pricing page, read September 6, 2026, calls Pro "an additional $89 USD/month billed yearly for each location." Its POS Pro yearly page, read the same day, advertises "25% off POS Pro" at $67 USD per month per location for a 12-month term, and labels that discount "($264 USD value per location)".

Budget each venue at the higher figure, and count the lower one only where you will commit that location for twelve months: cancelling early means paying "your monthly fees for the time remaining in your 12-month term."

On three venues that is $267 a month for the tills alone, against $201 if all three sit on a twelve-month term — subscriptions only, before the plan, apps, hardware and card fees.

Shopify Plus rewrites that arithmetic with a condition attached: "The first 20 POS Pro locations are included in all Shopify Plus plans", and past twenty Shopify waives the cost for your first 200 retail locations if you use Shopify Payments as your primary payment provider for your retail locations.

POS Pro is also what staffing rests on: POS app only staff are available only to merchants using Shopify POS Pro and can log in only to POS Pro locations. Assigning retail locations restricts where a PIN works and, by default, limits a staff member to viewing orders for the current location, though Shopify draws that line around orders alone: "It doesn't impact their ability to view data for all locations, such as product inventory." That order limit lifts only with the Manage orders at all locations permission.

When does a restaurant group outgrow Shopify POS?

The limit is service, not scale. No page we found in Shopify's POS documentation describes table service, a kitchen display or split bills; the surfaces we read are listed below. Toast, by contrast, says its Multi-Location Management is "built for US restaurant groups, franchises, and enterprise operators", while Shopify's help pages describe the same situation as locations under one store.

If ordering at the table, firing tickets to the kitchen and splitting a check are how service runs, the till is what changes — the Toast and Square comparison sits in our restaurant guide. If your venues sell across a counter, the group stays on one Shopify store — here is what one more venue adds on Shopify, besides what the restaurant tills charge for that same venue.
