Can Shopify automatically approve return requests?

Published ·
At a glance
Short answer
Shopify's self-serve returns help, read in October 2026, documents no auto-approval, so you review each request or use an app.
Request alerts
By email; return request notifications aren't available on the Shopify app.
Shopify Flow
A Return requested trigger exists; the action list and trigger templates we read show no approve action or template.
Returns apps
AfterShip (Essentials, Premium), Return Prime (from Grow) and ReturnGO (from Premium) list auto-approval, per listings read October 25, 2026.
Before you automate
Mechanic says approval can't be reverted and auto-approved requests can't later become exchanges.

Does Shopify approve return requests on its own?

Not in the built-in flow. A self-serve return request reaches you as an email to review, and you approve or decline it in your Shopify admin. Return request notifications aren't available on the Shopify app.

No Shopify help or changelog page we read on October 25, 2026 — self-serve returns, return rules, the developer returns pages — describes a setting that approves requests automatically. Our returns and cancellations guide explains what each request does.

Can Shopify Flow or the Admin API approve them?

Flow's Return requested trigger provides a return object, but its published template only sends a Slack notification. We found no approve action or approval template in the Flow action list and trigger templates we read; we did not browse the template library inside the Flow app.

Mechanic offers a ready-made Auto-approve return requests task; with several conditions, a request must meet all of them to be approved.

Before a task approves for you
Mechanic's task page says approval can't be reverted — the request can only be cancelled — and auto-approved requests can't later be used to exchange items.

The Admin API can approve requests. Flow's Send Admin API request action can use most GraphQL Admin API mutations, and returnApproveRequest approves a customer's return request. Pairing them looks possible, but Shopify doesn't document it as a recipe.

Shopify's 2025-07 changelog tells apps that approve requests with returnApproveRequest to migrate to returnProcess to handle refunds and exchanges; the mutations it names as deprecated are refundCreate and returnRefund.

Which returns apps approve requests automatically?

Shopify's developer docs list auto-approval among returns-app workflows. Listings read October 25, 2026 put it on these plans (vendor-reported; not a full list):

  • AfterShip Returns — automatic returns approval on Essentials and Premium; the Return Care plan (free, shopper-funded, revenue share) lists all Premium features.
  • Return Prime — auto-approve return and exchange requests on Grow and higher plans.
  • ReturnGO — auto-approve among its automation rules, on Premium and Pro.

Prices and allowances are in our comparison of seven returns apps.
