How to Create a Bundle on Shopify: Options, Stock, Channels

Build a fixed bundle or multipack with the free Shopify Bundles app: steps, the 3-option limit, stock from components, sales channels and a test order.

Listen to a short brief of this article
Hands-free while you multitask

The short version

Install the free Shopify Bundles app, click Create bundle, select your products and save, and you have a fixed bundle or multipack waiting in Draft.

Keep it within 3 options, combining matching options such as Size so that each counts once.

Set it to Active and publish it to a channel Shopify documents for bundles: Online Store, Shop and Shopify POS, plus Google & YouTube for fixed bundles only.

Its stock comes from its components, with the scarcest one setting how many you can sell, so place a test order before you announce it.

A bundle on Shopify is a product of its own, built from products you already sell: customers buy the set, while each component keeps its own stock and SKU underneath. This guide takes you through the free Shopify Bundles app from the first click to a test order: build the bundle, fit its options within the limits, price it, check its stock and publish it where it can sell.

The steps follow Shopify's Help Center, read on November 4, 2026, with screens from the app as of November 5, 2026. Where the app's limits and the help parted ways, we report the gap once, in a marked section: see our test.

Which Bundle Can You Build in the Free App?

Key takeaway

Start from what you want to sell. Shopify names three bundle types, and the free app covers two of them: a fixed bundle, "a bundle made from a predetermined set of products and associated variants", and a multipack, "a bundle with more than one of the same products". The third, mix-and-match, needs another tool.

For mix-and-match, Shopify points to third-party bundle apps on the App Store, and a store on the Plus plan can build a custom offering with Bundles APIs. What each class of paid app adds is in our comparison of where the free app stops.

Can You Create a Bundle on Shopify Without an App?

Key takeaway

If you were hoping to skip the app, Shopify's overview of product bundles settles it in one line:

To create product bundles on your store, you must have a bundles app installed on your Shopify store.
Shopify Help Center — Product bundles ·

The native alternative is a discount. A Buy X get Y offer gives shoppers the deal without creating a bundle product, but Shopify notes that "Customers must add all items to their cart manually." Setting one up is covered in our Shopify discounts guide.

For one developer's view of the other routes, Christopher Dodd's 2025 video covers native fixed bundles, a bundle as a group of products and Cart Transform. It was published in August 2025, before option combining and Google & YouTube selling arrived, and nothing on this page rests on it.

What to Check Before Your First Bundle

Key takeaway

Shopify sets three requirements a store has to meet to sell bundles. Each takes a moment to check in your own admin:

Can your store sell bundles?
ConditionWhere to check in your storeIf it isn't met
Online Store sales channel or a custom storefrontSales channels in the left menu of your adminAdd the channel or connect the storefront before you build
A bundles app installedApps in the left menu, where the free app shows as BundlesYou can't create a bundle, so install the app before you build
An upgraded checkoutSettings › CheckoutStores using checkout.liquid customizations or features are incompatible with bundles

Eligibility requirements on Shopify's bundle considerations page, read November 4, 2026.

If you still run checkout.liquid, start with our checkout upgrade guide. These conditions also matter later: when a store stops meeting them, Shopify sets its fixed bundles to Draft, and they aren't published to your sales channels.

Then get the products ready, because the bundle is built from them:

  • Create the components first. Shopify is explicit: "Before creating a bundle, you need to create the products that you want to include in the bundle."
  • Settle their SKUs. If a component's SKU changes, you need to delete and recreate the entire bundle.
  • Leave out what can't go in. Bundles aren't compatible with purchase options, the Shopify Subscriptions app or custom products.
  • Don't nest. Bundles can't contain other bundles.
Publish one trial bundle first
Shopify's bundle pages name a short list of channels. Before you build a whole range, build one bundle, publish it to the channel you care about and check it there. That is our advice, not a Shopify instruction.

Install the app last. Shopify Bundles is a free first-party app, available on all Shopify plans. Add it from its App Store listing; it then shows under Apps in your admin menu as Bundles, which is where the steps below begin.

How to Create a Fixed Bundle, Step by Step

Key takeaway

The steps follow Shopify's instructions for creating a bundle on desktop, with the labels the admin showed on November 5, 2026. The same page has a separate route for the mobile app.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps › Bundles.
  2. Click Create bundle.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
Steps 1 and 2: Bundles sits under Apps in the left menu, and Create bundle starts the form.
  1. In the Title field, enter a title for your bundle.
  2. Click Select products.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Steps 3, 4 and 10: the title comes first, Select products opens the picker, and Save and continue ends the form.
  1. In the Select products dialog (Shopify's help calls it Add products), tick the products for your bundle, then click Select.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
  4. Select products
Step 5: tick the components, check the count at the bottom left, then click Select.
  1. If the bundle takes more than one unit of a product, change the number in its quantity field.
  2. To leave a variant out, click its value chip under the product. Click it again to bring it back.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Steps 6 and 7: the quantity field and value chips sit on each product; Components keeps the running count.
  1. If you need them, open the three-dot menu beside a product for Add quantity as an option or Duplicate product.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Step 8: both items are tucked inside this menu, so they're easy to miss.
  1. If your products share option names, select Combine options with matching names, as covered in how to combine options.
  2. Click Save and continue. Shopify opens the bundle's product details page, with its status set to Draft.

How to Create a Multipack

Key takeaway

Shopify's help describes one route, Duplicate product, but the editor offers two, and they set up different choices for the shopper. The first steps match a fixed bundle, with a single product selected:

  1. Follow steps 1 to 5 above and select one product.
  2. For one choice across all units, enter the pack size in the quantity field. The Options list then shows that product's options once.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Step 2: a quantity of 2 keeps one set of options for both units.
  1. For a choice on each unit, leave the quantity at 1, open the three-dot menu and click Duplicate product instead. The product is listed again with its own options, marked (2).
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Step 3: Duplicate product adds the item's options a second time, pushing the count over the limit.
  1. Click Save and continue.

Use the quantity field unless shoppers really need to mix. A duplicated product with two options goes over the limit of 3, and combining would merge away the per-unit choice you duplicated for, so see what to do over the limit.

How Options and Variants Work in a Bundle

Key takeaway

A regular product's options describe one item. A bundle adds up the options of everything inside it, so the count grows with each product until you merge some of them. Products without variants, or with only one, display no selector, so they add nothing for the shopper to choose.

What Are the Limits on a Shopify Bundle?

Key takeaway
Limits in the Shopify Bundles app
LimitValueHow it counts
Products in a fixed bundleUp to 30Per bundle
Units of one componentUp to 2,000Per component
OptionsMaximum of 3Per bundle. A combined option counts as one; for Add quantity as an option, see our test
VariantsShopify's help lists 100 per bundle; see our testThe values you keep, multiplied (worked example below)

Shopify Bundles help page, read November 4, 2026.

Shopify's help lists 3 options and 100 variants per bundle. Plan on the limit of 3 options first. At or under 100 variants you have nothing to decide. If your set needs more, read our test before you cut a catalogue or build a range; the variant line on the Components card in these screens is covered there too.

For a regular product, Shopify's variant help says "You can create up to 2,048 variants for a product." That page doesn't mention bundles, and for a bundle in the Shopify Bundles app, Shopify's help lists 100 variants; how 2,048 works is in our guide to variant limits on a regular product.

Worked Example: Two T-Shirts With Size and Color

Key takeaway

Take two T-shirts, each with Size in 4 values and Color in 2 values. The variant count is the values of every option multiplied together, and how much you combine is what changes it:

Two T-shirts, three ways
SetupOptionsVariantsWithin 3 options?
Nothing combined44 × 2 × 4 × 2 = 64No
Only Size combined, because the colors differ34 × 2 × 2 = 16Yes
Size and Color combined, because both sets of values match24 × 2 = 8Yes

Our own example, not a Shopify figure; the counts match the editor's Components card as of November 5, 2026.

The Components card shows your own numbers as you build, so you never have to do this sum by hand:

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Middle row of the table: Size is merged and Color isn't, so read the options and variants lines.

How to Combine Options With Matching Names

Key takeaway

Combining reached the app on December 10, 2025, so older guides and videos don't show it. It's the first move for most bundles: the shopper picks a size once, and the selection applies to all products in the bundle that use that option name. Shopify sets one condition:

To combine product options, the option values need to match. The combined option counts as one of the three options available in the Bundles app.
Shopify Help Center — Combining bundle options ·
  1. Add your products in the bundle editor.
  2. In the Components card, scroll below the Options list.
  3. Select Combine options with matching names.
  4. Check the options and variants lines, then click Save and continue.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Apps
  2. Bundles
  3. Create bundle
Step 3: the box sits under the Options list, and merged options show a merge icon.

The checkbox works on names and values together. For two shirts in Black/White and Navy/Grey, it merges Size and leaves each Color separate. To undo it, clear the checkbox, which Shopify calls ungrouping.

What to Do When a Bundle Goes Over the Limit

Key takeaway

Try these in order, because each one costs more than the one before:

  1. Combine. Select Combine options with matching names, so the shopper chooses a shared option once and, unless each unit needs its own pick, loses nothing.
  2. Drop values. Click a value chip to "select or deselect the variant", as Shopify's steps put it. This works on an uncombined option; each value you drop lowers the variant count, and our test shows what happens to the option count.
  3. Split into two bundles. This is our advice rather than a Shopify instruction: when a set has too many independent choices, two smaller bundles are easier to sell and to maintain than one forced to fit.
  4. Use a third-party app. Shopify keeps a curated App Store collection of bundle apps for what the free app doesn't cover.

For the app's own message at the limit, and one further move it offers, see our test.

What to Fill In on the Bundle's Product Page

Key takeaway

Once you click Save and continue, Shopify asks you to "add any applicable product details" on the product details page. The bundle in these screens, built from components with no photos, opened with an empty Description and empty Media, so write the copy and add images as you would for any product.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Products
  2. Bundle
Description and Media were empty on this bundle, shown here already set to Active, as covered under publishing.

Below them, the page lists the bundle's options and a variant table with prices and availability. Shopify's edit instructions send you back to the Bundles app, or to the Bundled products block on this page, which displays the products included in the bundle.

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Products
  2. Bundle
Scroll past Media to reach the options and variants, grouped by Size, with Price and Available per row.

A few things on this page behave differently from a regular product:

  • Shipping. Bundles don't have their own shipping profiles.
  • Weight. It comes from the individual items, not from a bundle weight.
  • SKU. The bundle gets a SKU separate from its products, while orders list the SKUs of the individual items.
  • Filters. Bundled products don't appear under option filters, which Shopify puts down to index naming.

Leave the status on Draft for now. Publishing is its own step, after pricing and stock.

How to Price a Bundle and Apply a Discount

Key takeaway

The two $20 T-shirts in these screens opened at $40.00 per variant, and any reduction goes on after you save. The Shopify Bundles help page lists three ways to apply one:

  1. A discount code. Create it in Discounts, aimed at the bundle itself, as the next section explains.
  2. A manual price. Edit the price of each variant in the table on the bundle's product page.
  3. Cart Transform. A developer route for customized bundles.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Products
  2. Bundle
Way 2: the table on the bundle's page, here grouped by Size, has a Price field on each row.

Point the Discount at the Bundle, Not Its Components

Key takeaway

Bundles support discount codes and automatic discounts, including supported discount combinations. The trap is the target: Shopify says "The discount won't apply if you select only the component products." So under Applies to, choose Specific products and pick the bundle:

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Discounts
  2. Create discount
  3. Amount off products
Under Applies to, select the bundle itself rather than the products inside it.

The discount is then calculated on the parent bundle first and shared out by weighted price, which is why Shopify's example gives a product at 80% of the bundle's price 80% of the discount. How big a bundle discount needs to be is a different question, covered in our section on bundles with a small discount.

How Many Bundles Will Shopify Let You Sell?

Key takeaway

A bundle holds no stock of its own: Shopify's inventory rule is that "The product with the lowest inventory level determines how many bundles can be sold." In Shopify's own example, a bundle of 2 chairs and 1 desk, with 15 chairs and 8 desks in stock, can sell 7. The arithmetic is in our walk-through of bundle inventory.

Two component settings take a product out of that sum altogether, so look at them first when a bundle's number surprises you:

A product's inventory isn't included in the bundle quantity calculation if the product's inventory isn't tracked, or if the product is set to Continue selling when out of stock.
Shopify Help Center — Bundle eligibility and considerations ·

On a variant's screen, the admin labels these two settings Inventory tracked and Sell when out of stock; the second is what the help calls Continue selling when out of stock.

  2. Component product
  3. Variant
Both settings are per variant: the switch at the top of Inventory and the chip at its foot.

Inventory tracked offNot counted: a shortage of this product no longer limits the bundle
Sell when out of stock onNot counted: a shortage of this product no longer limits the bundle
Either setting changed on a live bundleShopify says this might affect the bundle's calculated availability, so recheck it

Shopify's bundle considerations page, read November 4, 2026; admin labels as of November 5, 2026.

Whether to turn Sell when out of stock on at all is a separate decision, covered in our FAQ on letting Shopify sell when out of stock.

A bundle counts stock across the store. Shopify's help says "Bundles don't track inventory by location, but by overall stock."

The documented exception is merchants using Managed Markets and fulfillable inventory, who can show availability by location before checkout. For stock across several sites, see our multi-location inventory guide.

In the Products list, a bundle is easy to tell from a regular product, because the Inventory column shows no stock number:

In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Products
Look in the Inventory column: Bundle with XX variants marks a bundle in your product list.

If a bundle shows zero while its components look fine, the causes are listed in why a bundle shows zero.

Where You Can Publish a Bundle

Key takeaway

Building a bundle doesn't mean it can sell everywhere. Meeting the store requirements gets you in; the table below lists where Shopify documents a bundle can go next, as read on November 4 and 5, 2026. Shopify's app help files its own list under "Supported sales channels", and the Product bundles overview names four channels in one sentence:

You can sell bundles through the Online Store, Shop, and Shopify POS sales channels, and on the Google & YouTube sales channel with fixed product bundles only.

Shopify Help Center, Shopify Changelog and Shopify Developer Docs, read November 4 and 5, 2026.

Google is the newest entry: Shopify's changelog announced it for fixed bundles on February 10, 2026, and says updates to pricing, images and inventory sync automatically. The channel itself is covered in our Google Shopping guide.

On the POS side, publishing comes down to making sure Point of Sale is selected; the app and its setup are in our Shopify POS app guide.

How to Publish: Status and Sales Channels

Key takeaway
  1. On the bundle's product page, click the sliders icon beside Publishing. The dialog that opens is Manage publishing; Shopify's help calls it Manage sales channels.
  2. Turn on the channels you want, then click Done.

Step 2: the dialog can list more channels than Shopify's bundle pages name; for those, publish one trial bundle first.

  2. Click Save.

Steps 3 and 4: Status changes only when you click Save, and the sliders icon for step 1 is just below it.

Shopify's help says a new bundle must be set to Active to publish to the Online Store, Shop and Shopify POS. If you're unsure about Unlisted, our FAQ on Draft, Archived and Unlisted products sets them side by side.

What If Your Channel Is Not on the List?

Meta isn't named in the channel list on the Shopify bundle help pages we read on November 4, 2026, but Shopify's Selling on Meta page says product bundles "aren't supported in Meta's direct checkout", and its Microsoft Copilot page says the same of Copilot's direct checkout. Both pages say that if you deactivate direct checkout, shoppers can still discover your products and are redirected to your online store to complete their purchase, but neither says whether that covers a bundle, so don't plan a range on it: try one trial bundle first and see what reaches the channel before you build the rest. Do the same for any other channel missing from the table above. This is our advice, not a Shopify instruction.

How to Test a Bundle Before You Announce It

Key takeaway

The full procedure is in our FAQ on placing a test order; Shopify says such an order lets you check your checkout process and your settings for order processing, inventory, shipping, email notifications and taxes. Test orders and simulated transactions don't display in your payouts or reports.

Test mode blocks live orders
Customers can't place live orders during the time your payment providers are in test mode, so run this outside your selling hours and switch back straight after. You can test a payment gateway only after you've chosen a paid plan.

For a bundle, four checks matter most:

  1. Storefront. Open the bundle's page and try every selector, including each combined option.
Storefront product page of a bundle
Check 1: with options combined, the shopper picks one Size and one Color for both shirts.
  1. Checkout. Add it to the cart and go through checkout. The order summary should display the bundle as a group.
  2. Order. Open the order in your admin. Shopify displays bundles in orders as a nested group of line items, with SKUs listed for the individual items rather than for the bundle.
In Shopify adminOpen in your store
  1. Orders
  2. Order
Check 3: in this order the group shows as component lines, each with its SKU and a Part of label.
  1. Stock. Open a component and the bundle, and confirm both counts moved as you expect. Shopify updates product inventory levels in real time.

Expect the group to come apart in some places: where each line item is handled separately, such as split fulfillments, returns and exchanges, the bundle's items display as individual line items instead.

What to Redo After a Bundle Goes Live

Key takeaway

Most of the upkeep comes from changing a product without remembering it sits inside a bundle. Check this table before you edit one:

What Our Test Store Showed

Key takeaway

On November 5, 2026 we built bundles from $20 test T-shirts in the Bundles app on a Shopify development store, and compared the results with Shopify's help page read the day before; your store may differ.

So treat the limit of 3 options as firm and the 100 as Shopify's published figure, which the app didn't enforce when saving here: if your plan depends on going above it, build one such bundle and test it on your own theme and channels first.

We didn't activate the 150-variant bundle or open it on a storefront, go above 150 variants, try another plan, open a multipack on a storefront, see whether a bundle picks up photos from its components (ours had none), check third-party themes and apps, or sell through Facebook & Instagram, whose switch was on but whose channel wasn't connected, so that proves nothing.

  1. Check the three eligibility conditions, because a store that loses one sees its fixed bundles set to Draft.

  2. Settle every SKU before you build, because changing one later means deleting and recreating the bundle.

  3. Add up every option the shopper will choose against the limit of 3.

  4. Select the combine box and read the result, because it merges only options whose names and values match.

  5. Check the bundle's own price and select the parent bundle in any product or collection discount.

  6. Turn on a channel Shopify names for bundles, or try one trial bundle on another, and set Status to Active, because a Draft bundle isn't published.

  7. Place a test order on one bundle and check the storefront, the checkout, the order's SKUs and the stock.

The Bottom Line

Key takeaway

The app's own steps are short. What costs time is finding out late that a set doesn't fit the limits, or that the channel you wanted isn't on Shopify's list.

Start with one bundle you can check end to end. Build it, publish it to your target channel and place a test order, then repeat for the range. If the set still needs more than 3 options after combining, or a shopper-built mix, compare paid apps before you build anything else.

Yes. Shopify describes Shopify Bundles as a free first-party app, available on all Shopify plans, that creates and edits fixed bundles and multipacks right from your admin. It doesn't build mix-and-match bundles. For those, Shopify points to third-party bundle apps on the App Store, or to Bundles APIs for stores on the Shopify Plus plan.
No. Shopify's overview says you must have a bundles app installed to create product bundles on your store, and the free Shopify Bundles app is the direct route. Without an app, the closest native tool is a Buy X get Y discount. That is a discount rather than a bundle, and customers must add all items to their cart manually.
A fixed bundle in the Shopify Bundles app takes up to 30 components, with up to 2,000 units per component, according to Shopify's help. A bundle can't contain another bundle, and custom products aren't compatible. Products without variants, or with only one variant, display no selector, so they add nothing for the shopper to choose.
In the Shopify Bundles app, Shopify's help lists a maximum of 3 options and 100 variants. A combined option counts as one of the three. If your set needs more than 100 variants, or a quantity added as an option, read the section What Our Test Store Showed before planning around them.
Yes. If a product in a fixed bundle has more than one variant, the customer can choose from its variants, so each product normally brings its own selector. To have them pick a size only once, select Combine options with matching names. It works only when the option names and values match, and the selection then applies to all products using that name.
Not independently. Shopify works out a bundle's availability from its components: each component's stock is divided by its quantity in the bundle, rounded down, and the lowest result sets how many bundles you can sell. Bundles track overall stock rather than stock by location; merchants using Managed Markets and fulfillable inventory can show whether a bundle is in stock before checkout, based on location-specific inventory.
One scarce component is enough: the lowest result across the components sets the bundle's number, so one tracked component at zero, not set to continue selling, holds it at zero. If expected inventory isn't displaying, Shopify's tip is to adjust a component up by one, save and adjust it back to re-sync. Our guide to bundles that keep changing to Draft covers the rest.
No. Shopify says that when the price of a bundled product updates, either manually or from a price import, the bundle price doesn't update, and you need to change it yourself in your admin. So recheck the price of each bundle whenever you reprice a product inside it.
On Google, yes for fixed bundles in certain countries and currencies, but not the YouTube Shopping in-app checkout or Google AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout. Meta isn't named in the channel list on the Shopify bundle help pages, and Shopify's Selling on Meta page says product bundles aren't supported in Meta's direct checkout, so publish one trial bundle there before you build a range.
Yes. Shopify lists Shopify POS among the sales channels for bundles, and its September 2024 changelog post says publishing is a matter of making sure Point of Sale is selected in the bundle's Publishing section. The bundle also needs Active status, since Shopify's help says a new bundle starts in Draft and must be set to Active to publish there.
No. Shopify says bundles aren't compatible with purchase options, which include subscriptions, pre-orders and try-before-you-buy, and they aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app either. To sell a set on a renewing schedule, you need to look outside the free Shopify Bundles app, and it's worth checking any other app's documentation for this before you install it.
Returns, yes; exchanges, no. Return eligibility depends on whether the individual products inside are set as final sale in your return rules, and you can't define the bundle itself as final sale. Shopify says bundles can't be used in exchanges, even for an identical bundle. In returns, the bundle's items display as individual line items rather than a group.
